The band challenge thread has me wanting to take it up a notch!!!! So I posted this new thread as to not take away from the other with this BS. Okay who from today's current artist would take on Martha Reeves, Mary Wells And Gladys Knight in their primes and live to tell about it?? Sh*T I would pay extra to see that show and even more to see the B-slappin the motown girls would throw down on them after they even tried to get on the stage and perform with them!! Beyonce? I think she would be beyonced on her booty! Alshia? The girl couldn't find the key to their dressing room never mind the stage!! The white wanna beeeeeeeeessssss posse! Madonna, Christina, Britney.??? To the wood shed for a lesson on what Soul is!!! A woopin of some major magnitude would be passed out!!!!! They could all go and Kiss each others wounds after that show. (wink wink) Ok SD'er's who today could take them on? |

I've been a Madonna fan, and seen her in action. It was in her early years, way before the book and seedy revelations. The Britney, Christina,Mariah posse - have never appealed to me. Beyonce - has great talent,a wonderful future ahead, and may be a contender. In time. Right now I can't think of one single name that I can put up. I think that means "no contest". |

NONE! Now, just 10-15 years ago there were still some baby divas who had what it took: * Miki Howard [pipes] * Regina Belle [not quite as good as Anita, but close] * Karyn White [exuded "Diva" - a young Diana] * Lisa Stansfield [soulfulest white chick since Teena!] * Lisa Fischer [only one album but what a great one!] * Jody Watley [A legend in her own right and still kickin' it - long overdue for a "VH1 Divas" appearance] Honorable mention girl group - POP not SOUL: Wilson Phillips! [they knew how to harmonize for real...and they're back and about 100 pounds lighter!] :o) |

Gracious, Geetings, "Bless U" (the 1st hot single off M.R.V.'s "Black Magic" album), welcome back to the Soulful Detroit Forum for the 1st time. With all of your knowledge, insight and candor, U are at the right place. U'll be widely appreciated at S.D.F. Now, Blessy U, work your "Black Magic" here. "Presto! Chango! Alakazam!".... ooops, that's from a different Motown girl group. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ----------------------- >>>>>>>>>> MO-town vs. HO-town Folks, step right up! U are actually going to see exactly that this Monday eve on "M-45" in one of the "acts" when that former 2nd-rate girl -- or was she the former 3rd -- from the now disbanded Destiny Child group -- appears with two of the legendary SUPREMES. Child is rite! When she comes on stage to stand between -- literally -- former SUPREMES MARI and CINDY, it will be exhibit "A" for MO-town vs. HO-town. The Motowners (Mari & Cindy) will be dressed mostly appropriately but the Ho-town girl will have herself four times =less= fabric on her itsy bitsy kiddie dress than Mama Cindy or Madam Mari. Little Miss HO-land's littlest little dress is ultra ho-ey, short-short-short, very sleeve-less and with her the baby child, the little chile, and the half-naked child are all roled into one very skinny chile, overshadowed in stature, legacy and structure by the former Supremes. It will look like what it is: a Ho trashing up the two Mo's. This will not go unnoticed by either the public or the media!! On "The Mourning After", think of that DIANA ROSS song, "Have U read the morning papers?... Somebody's missing! Guess who?" (Message edited by STONEWALL on May 11, 2004) |

SDF Ralph..... Better late than never as I intended to e-mail U b/4 "M.D.". Hope your Mother had a swell Mother's Day. I told my Mother about some of the Mothers' ages (including yours) of SDF-ers: 80... 81... 82... 83... 84... 85... and even a Grandma 100! Like U said prior, hope we'll reach that age and be that good -- "Dancing In The Street". Speaking of "DITS", Miss MARTHA got a big, hearty, Soulful Dee-troit laugh when I told her about this file last nite. She said we all have it correct with "MOtown vs. HOtown" and that we will all, in fact, see some of it on "M-45". (That's a Honey Chile quote!) P.S. And "Bless U", Diva Reeves had 2 words 4 U: "Bless U", 4 real. |

Look, Bless U, these "moving men with the muscles" are =not= OUT there to meet the ladies. Well, at least not in New York City, Frisco, DC, Key West, Detroit (only kidding - not!), etc. I have 3 sisters and they've learned plenty from me! First of all, they know who wrote that Gay-themed hit song "Muscles (I Want Muscles All Over My Body)" for Diana Ross: none other than Miss-ter MICHAEL JAX (who wanted to record it himself butt Epic went bananas). Why, that song could have been a great follow-up to one of THE VILLAGE PEOPLE's songs such as "Macho Man". All of my sisters and me know that if they see "muscles" that they are then to ask the guy if he's a fan of DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES in any combination? If "no", which is unlikely, then U go on to BABS, then BETTE and/or then CHER. Now, if the dude can get past all of those 4 (again, very unlikely), then U ask the final tell-all test question: JUDY GARLAND! If he can pass those 5 hurdles, he's probably not Gay. If needed (because of young age), bonus question: are U a fan of Liza Minnelli? ******Note: This test applies only to muscled males. For U girlz, it's kool! Oh, isn't Juice all that I said he was and less? At least, as he says, he's not the Juice from L.A. Well, U can't argue with him there. If he was that Juice, I wouldn't argue with him anyway. I'd, as D.R.S. sang, "Run, Run, Run" -- for my life! I was in a record store today. U never know what you're gonna find: a D.R.S. two-fer of "The Supremes a-Go-Go" and "Love Child". Whadya know, another "train" song: "How Long Has That Evening Train Been Gone?"

Don, I can't take the credit for the title of the thread. I didn't start it. Stonewall, Had a nice time with my mom on Mother's day. Nice to hear you passed along the info of all the mamas on SD. By the way, I can't say I've ever been a fan of Judy Garland. Does this make me anti-gay or some such thing? When I was playing at the Peppermint Lounge in 63 Liza used to come in rather frequently. We said hello a couple of times. Of course in those days she was just Judy Garland's daughter. Still, do I get a couple of points for the experience? |

Hey, Ralphie, no, not liking JUDY! is "suspect"; however, it does not definitely mean not pro-Gay. I assume that U must have also seen RONNIE & THE RONETTES (Estelle and Nedra) at the P-Lounge. It would have been right before "Be My Baby". ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------------------- Toni with an"i", Friend of Dorothy, how about "A Star Is Born", for example? U are funny! With your name U don't know nuttin' about LIZA MINNELLI? Hello! Actually, you'll both find this interesting. After I spoke on stage in Central Park for the "International Stonewall 25" in June 1994 to an audience of an estimated 1,000,000 people -- I think I've beaten The Beatles, haven't I -- the "act" on after me and the STONEWALL Veterans' Assocation was... LIZA with a "Z". So, we hugged and all, of course (she's Italian). Liza stated to the audience that "This is also the 25th anniversary of Mama". The audience went wild with applause of appreciation. Miss M then belted out a very moving song, "The Day After That". The main thing, T.R., is that U saw DIANA & THE SUPES in Tampa!

Good evening all! Bless U: thank you for your kind words. I try to be fair & decent to all. I love my Soul music & they certainly don't make them like they used to. STONEWALL: Thank you also for your magnanimous words. My friend, you flatter me too much & if I were the Juice from L.A., I would certainly understand your need for a midnight run or sprint!!! |

Well, whadya know? Juice is out of the shower! Juice, if U told anyone that I described U with "magnanimous" words (as U stated above), they wouldn't believe U. That's why I put them in writing for all to see. I just didn't realize that they were "magnanimous". Also, U need -- ooops, I mean, deserve -- any flattery U can get. U know, Juice, when new girls come to this Board, I tell them "Straight Up" (what a coincidence, a MARIAH song) that U, Juice, are the "King of the Board". In fact, Bless U then commented, "And that means U, Stonewall, are the....." I interrupted the Girl and said, "Don't U go there, B**** U". Besides, my moves on the Board are many more than a King! Oh, bi the way, where are U spending "M-45"? P.S. That Mariah -- by PAULA ABDUL -- song was a joke! It stems from when "J" posted and I/D'd a foto of Paula =as= Mariah the other night at nearly 4 a.m., when he should have been asleep! |

Stonewall, Be My Baby preceded my stint at the Peppermint by a few years I believe. At least I don't remember ever seeing the girls there. The New York Yankees came in quite a bit though, along with the New York wiseguys. |

Hey, Ralphie -- I bet that nickname was used at "The Lounge". For some reason in what U wrote, since U were at The Peppermint in 1963, I thought U might have caught THE RONETTES. I think U only missed them by a year or less as they performed there at least through 1962, from what I personally know as told directly to me many years later by RONNIE. I've read the same! At least U saw LIZA with a "Z". Wiseguys? What a surprise! I started goin' with this one very good looking and Italian dude that I met at The Stonewall. One of his "side jobs" was as manager of Jay & The "Cara Mia" Americans (so I met all them many times). I never knew he was a wiseguy until my Mother and I went to his parent's "Silver Anniversary" on Guy Lombardo Boulevard! It was like the wedding party scene in "The Godfather". Since she was having a great and lavish time, my Mother could care less. I was a bit uncomfortable especially since, when referring to me, several of "The Guyz" asked him: "Who'z that? or worse yet, "What'z he doin' here?" Ecventually, they found out -- and it wasn't for the meat-balls! |

Stonewall, There was another Ralph at the Peppermint. This dude was the quintessential NY Wiseguy. Kind of a big guy with a shaved bald head ( a rarity back then ) that would come into the club with a different gorgeous babe every night. It took us a while to figure out what the deal was at the club. Actually we were clued by the guy that ran the lights for the show. He was our age and we became friends quickly. I was talking to him one day and had remarked that for such a relatively small club it appeared that they had a couple of hundred employees. Tony ( the light guy, who's father, Louie, was there also ) Mentioned that since I was an Italian from Detroit I should be able to figure it all out. ( DING!!!!) Ahhhhh...Got it. A "Family" business. They loved us there though. Wanted us to sign a two year contract for the up-coming New York World's Fair. At this point we had been away from home for quite a while and wanted to go back to Detroit to play there and kind of re-group. All in all a great experience for us. By the way, Tony's father Louie was the bodygaurd for Sammy Kaye, the " owner " of the club. It turns out Sammy was a Don of sorts in the Family. He was really a sweet guy though and treated us like his own. |

Wow, Ralphie, that is great 411 to read and I can feel it. Plus, thanx for takin' the time. At The Stonewall, there was also that "family" feelin'. Three nights a year, the "Guyz" actually put linen tablecloths on the tables. It was for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve. That was it. Yeah, "Fat Tony" was thought of as the "King of Straights". He had a secret apartment around the corner from The Stonewall -- literally a stone's throw -- with his secret boyfriend (a real femme, too). With Gays and a certain type of I-talians, how could there not be a "family" feelin'? Anyway, I felt more 'at home' there than 'at home'. Oh, the good old daze! P.S. In case U are interested, Guy Lombardo Boulevard (the street was changed to that name after the longtime friend of the "Guyz" passed), is located on Long Isalnd in Freeport. Ding! Dong!! |
