Where I work offers a unique educational opportunity and I thought I would share this with the SD family. I work at a FREE boarding school for children coming from single-parent families. The school offers a unique opportunity and is believe it or not, an excellent school. Girard would accept international students if they met the criteria. Check out our web site at www.girardcollege.com.

Vonnie, I know that you know about the school: right smack dab in your old hood.

Nosey,

I can truly say that I worked my butt off for Girard College to be the type of institution it is today. For all of you that don't know about Girard College I will give you a brief synopsis.

I lived in the neighborhood called Francisville from birth, and Girard College was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. The school had an ivy covered stone wall that encircled the entire school. I heard that inside of those ivy covered walls was an small city. The school was completely free to orphaned young men, however there was one required caveat; THE STUDENT MUST BE WHITE. The very rich Girard Family wrote this into the school policy, and they were the ones who paid for the entire education of these white youth.

I can't remember the year it may have been around 1960 or 1961, Girard College was picketed every single day, from early morning to late evenings. The picketing took place through winter, spring, summer and fall. Even inclement weather did not stop the diehards from picketing. I was a kid and my parents thought that I was hanging out with my friends. I would take my shower and change my clothes and go meet my friends and we would march around that wall. I had such a great time singing songs such as "Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around, turn me around, I'm gonna keep on walkin, keep on talkin, headin for freedom ground". Shouting 2-4-6-8 we wanna intergrate, and listening to all the speeches by our elders. I particulary remember "Freedom George", he was always talking through his megaphone and leading us in songs or chants.

We eventually created such a stir that others began to listen and join in the cause. One principal who really helped was the great politician and community activist Cecil B. Moore, he was tireless in his fight to open Girard College to people of color. Cecil made so much noise that our brethern from the south decided to come and help us. Yes, Dr. Martin Luther King himself came to Girard College, I'll never forget his speech to us, he told us how proud he was that we never gave up our fight. That was the day that I had the privelege of shaking the hand of Dr. Martin Luther King, a day that I will never forget and a battle I will never forget.

Now I can truly say, the battle was won.

Vonnie through your tireless efforts the school is now open to ALL people and the education is second to none. The teachers are dedicated as well as the houseparents (my division)and the graduates can compete at any college. MY nephew is a 1984 graduate and did well at Drexel and is now an investment banker. Fortunately, there is no one left around from those dark days and quite frankly most of the teachers were probably not even born when the great lawsuit was initiated by Judge Raymond Pace Alexander and followed up by Cecil B. Moore. I've been there for 23 years and I can say it is a wonderful place to work and to see children thrive in our happy and child centered environment.

So to my SDForumers it may be too late for the September 2004-05 school year but I highly recommend getting those applications in. Let Nosey know when it's being sent and although I have no "juice" my buddy works in the Admissions Office and I'll make sure that it doesn't get lost in the sauce. As Paulie would say Capice?

Vonnie what an experience shaking Dr. King's hand! Wow! Thanks for telling your story.

P.S. btw, we have about 4 kids from New York who attend.

I woke up with a start this morning and realized that I didn't tell y'all about another FREE boarding school...www.miltonhershey.com. Milton Hershey makes the Hershey Milk Chocolate and his school was patterned after Girard. The Hershey school is in Hershey, PA of course, outside of Harrisburg, PA. It is supposed to be even better than Girard due to the fact that the Hershey empire has more money than Girard. Check out their web site.

Also there is Mountain Mission School in Grundy, VA that is FREE as well. The only negative I have with that school is that it is in the mountains of VA and there is no airport nearby.

If I had to rank the schools according to what I've been told Hershey would be #1, Girard next and Mountain Mission last (only because I have no first hand knowledge of the school).

Hershey students can work at Hershey Theme Park over the summer and Hershey has farm animals that the students can have hands on experience with. They live in modern split-level homes with married couples and it's more bucolic and SAFE for children.

I hope some family will be blessed by this information.
