Like Madeline Bell's version of the classic 'I'm gonna make you love me' has been long forgotten.(like DeeDEE Warwick's as well) Alton Mcclain's (learn to respect)The POWER OF LOVE' seems to have entered the land of obscurity leaving only Stephanie Mills' version in most people's memory(craw). And believe me the rip off version pails in comparison. Alton (Skip Scarborough's wife) really got a raw deal. her 4th lp was supposedly destroyed by her label after it was pressed 2 decades ago. If anyone has ever heard (IT MUST BE LOVE)Alton Mcclain ,they've had themselves a serious treat. I have each of her three lps.She did a duet as did Liz Lands with Johnny Bristol on 'Hang on in there Baby' which is an irony.(the two of them are amongst my favorite divas)Ms Madeline Bell is the Belle of the Ball over in Amsterdam still. She is now married and is a Reeves....Like Shirley Alston Reeves....Ms Martha Reeves is an admirer of Alton Mcclain as well. Good taste goes along with great divas.I just love all the gals I've mentioned...Stephi is just ok tho.... |

Hi. I have the 45 of Alton Mc Clain & Destiny's, "It Must Be Love". I didn't know she was married to Skip. I agree with Mr. Eli (what's up Eli!), Angela Winbush wrote I Learned to Respect The Power of Love When she was 16. How could Alton recorded the same song? I imagine Alton being a little older than Ms. Winbush. Please enlighten us LaBrenda, thanks. Handsome |

I will check up on the dates. Mz Mcclain recorded that song on the ALTON McCLAIN and DESTINY (Roberta Steiger and the late Dee Marie Warren both of KRYSTOL)for POLYDOR records . I'd say it was 1978 or 79. this was definitely the first recorded version. And Winbush and Alton are similiar in age. Winbush is probably older I would guess and definitely not as pretty....oops or nearly as soulful....double oops.... |

From what I've read, Alton and Destiny did record the song first. Much later, Angela Winbush did record the song, on her album THE REAL THING circa 1989 or 1990. FYI: I'm not sure if she and Rene Moore ever recorded it during the duet days. |

I remember Alton McClain & Destiny appeared at a local soul club here when the song "It Must Be Love" was big.I honestly don't remember another song of theirs played on radio. With Altons' strong voice I thought they were really going to be big. |

Handsome, From what I've read, its the same song. Alton & Destiny did it first. Stephanie Mills remade it and had a #1 R&B hit with it. |

Alton McLain (Scarborough) still has it...TRUST ! She sang at Skip's funeral & I got chill bumps. The last time that happened was upon hearing Deniece Williams sing the Star Spangled Banner prior to an L.A./Anaheim Rams game. Since Alton is raising a young daughter, I doubt that she'd want to do a full fledged tour in support of any CD project...but she deserves to be heard ! BTW...Skip's son Marc is a tremendous talent as well. I've heard him do "Love Ballad" (penned by his dad) in a way that would make Jeffery Osborne AND George Benson drop it from their repertoire. |

Rene moore was on their 1st lp as well.....I had no idea SKIP S had died. God bless!....wow!...Alton lived next to a club I used to frequent in NYC.I heard her sing a mini concert on the subway once. That gorgeous voice pierced right thru all the noise on the train in motion. I was enamored by that spirit! Truly one of the most distinguishable sweet toned angelic voices I've ever experienced. What a treat. A voice that literally cut through any competing noises.I still am astounded that I witnessed that impromptu concert with her and a buddy she was entertaining. It was a Stylistics or a Delfonics song. it slips my wasted mind for a quick sec...COME BACK ALTON....share that gift of yours....you sweetheart you!...and what a knockout to boot! |

Alton McClain was definitely good. I have that LP & it was ok. I must say that in my opinion, Stephanie recorded the definitive version. Ms McClain has some strong genes, as her daughter Janice actually had the Club hit "Smack Dab In The Middle" at the end of '79, the same year that her mom hit with "It Must Be Love". I think that our Bobby E can illuminate further. As for Angela not being nearly as "soulful", I don't know about that. If you have been a follower of both of these ladies, as I was, I appreciate them both. I thought that Angela was pretty damn soulful singing songs such as: Everything We Do, I Love You More, My First Love, I'll Be Good, You Don't Have To Cry, Your Smile & Angel. I thoght that Angela showed one hell of a vocal range, especially her performance on Angel, where she went from the lowest of lows, to the highest of highs. Maybe it's just me, but I found her to be quite soulful, on par with the best out there. By the way LaBrenda, the song Let The Music Play is by Shannon. I also loved Krystols 1st LP with "After The Dance", Same Place, Same Time" & "Nobody's Gonna Get This Lovin' But You". I was terribly saddened when Ms Warren died in a car accident. Their second LP was certainly missing something without her. Reese, Rene & Angela never recorded The Power Of Love on their LPs. One last thought...STEPHANIE MILLS IS JUST OK??????? Wow, that's incredulous! |

thanx but that's not the 'LET THE MUSIC PLAY' I mean either....that was very popular and I shook my bootay to that many times.Loved it, bought it, on vinyl and on cd..yip..thank you though...keep a lookin' tho'....I appreciate any and all efforts....Pilot Error is my favorite Stephi song and all the uptempo numbers she does with the extremely soulful 'late' Miss GWEN GUTHRIE and TAWATHA AGEE as her backup are second to that one...but I'm a bit tough on Stephi for reasons other than her singing...We all can grow.not to dish...NOW MS GWEN G...that's my other love...Janice Mcclain is Alton's daughter?...well hit me with your rhythym stick that's news to me!How could someone so young have a daughter so old?...don't answer, maybe I know.....still....hmmnn |

Hey LaBrenda. You've got a lot of good info & it's always good to learn some things that I've never known. Could you give a little more info regarding the Let The Music Play that you're referring to? Male or female singer? A little more lyrical content would be helpful. Believe me, there's someone here who will come up with the song. These folks are somewhat amazing when it comes to that. As far as Steffi, I respect the fact that you have other knowledge that I may not be privvy to. Keep the info flowing, anyone who big ups Alton McClain, Tawatha & Gwen G, can't be bad Peace Juice |

Hi Everyone. Thanks Reese, & LaBrenda. Angela Winbush did write that song in 1978. Her reading of the song wasn't bad either. I have to get a hold of the Alton McClain 1st version. Hey Darren! (that's my name too)! Handsome |

Let the music play was an uptempo song played at least once in a disco in Boston perhaps the deejay DANAE Jacovitis from CHAPS/STYX in Boston might know it..as he was a fixture in the Boston club scene. ..It was a female singer...who must have been able to 'saaang' cos I wouldn't have made a mental note of it for the past 25 years or so...oy...time flies !....As I said (I think) not even sure that, that was even the title, but it's a refrain/chorus throughout the upbeat funk of it all....and the (baby, baby, baby,am i losing you?)was a female singer as well and very soul full . thanx again! peace |

Here's a bit of trivia. Did you all know that Alton McClain was one of the singers considered as a potential replacement of Mary Wilson when Mary departed the Supremes in 1977? |
