Hello Everyone,
I recently bought bought a copy of Motown 25 and thinking what a great show it was. My question is reguarding Marvin Gaye; I was wondering if he gave a preformance that wasn't seen in the orginal broadcast? The reason I ask is at the end of the show Marvin had on a red tux which was different from the white and cream colored suit he was wearing during his What's going on performance. Or were there any performances in general that didn't make the show? Any answers to this question would be very helpful, and if this thread has already been started, please forgive me.

Oh, T.L., U are forgiven! Only kidding. I'm very impressed with and welcoming of how exceedingly polite U are -- very unlike our resident clawed cat, Spookie. There's no "M-25" file currently on this board -- though it has been many times in the past. We're busy with the forthcoming "M-45"! There is an interesting file on that, entitled "Countdown to Motown 45".

Regarding "M-25" in 1983, Mr. GAYE probably and simply just changed outfits as many of the performers do that before the show's finale so that they can be seen in yet a different outfit. It's typically done by all female performers (unless they are butches) and by Gay or vain males or both. So MARVIN qualifies. Good for him. That =red= tux was fierce, hot and daring.

To answer your second question, absolutely certain acts are cut from the final show in most any big multi-performer show. That's why we never saw ASHFORD & SIMPSON on "M-25". They performed but we never saw it. "M-25"s producers also embarrassingly reduced the performances of MARTHA REEVES, JUNIOR WALKER and MARY WELLS from full songs to 1/3 versions. Shameful! Many of us are nervously concerned as to which artists may be cut out or cut down this time. Or, if a performer did two numbers, the producers may "86" one of the songs. Sometimes it's because of space reasons and sometimes it's done due to the performer and/or lack of performance. Hopefully, it will be no one this time; however, that's unlikely. U know what I mean, T.L. For example, I trust that U'd rather see MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS singing their #1 song "Dancing In The Street" than WAYNE BRADY BUNCH performing STEVIE WONDER's "Superstition".

"Watchout"! At the end of the "M-45" show, look and see who U observe in the finale number, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", that U didn't see perform during the show!

If believe U are =new=, so welcome to the Soulful Detroit Forum!

In her bio, Martha Reeves stated that she and Marvin Gaye were slated to do a duet at MOTOWN 25, but Marvin didn't show up to rehearsal. So Smokey stood in for him, and Martha gave Marvin a tape of it on a Walkman, never to see it again.

When MOTOWN 25 was taped, PEOPLE magazine did a story on it. One of the photos accompanying the article showed Martha performing with Smokey. I have no idea if its from the rehearsal or the show itself. But judging from their attire, I'd assume it was from the show.

As far as who was cut out of the show, many artists were, including Syreeta, Jose Feliciano, TG Sheppard, Ashford and Simpson, and others.

Thank you very Much Stonewall for the info, and I was saddened to see the performances of Martha Reeves, Jr. Walker and Mary Wells reduced to what is was. I have nothing against Wayne Brady, but I would much rather hear Martha Reeves.

Thank you Reese because i've seen TG Sheppard, and Jose Feliciano's preformance but I did not know that Syreeta, and Ashford and Simpson were in the show. Thank you, you have been a great help.

I've posted on the old forum before, but my post weren't frequent, but I visit Soulful Detroit on a daily basis. I truly do love the site and the wealth of information I get from it.
