I feel that The Dells are one of the greatest Soul groups of all-time, of any era. We all know their names, so I'm not going to do a biographical thing here. Actually, my focus is on the "geniuses" who took so long to induct them into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame & the so-called "Music Experts": critics & media who seem to consider them a 50s DooWop group. First, the Producers of the Rock & Roll Award Show. These bastions of musical history & knowledge were smart enough to give The Dells all of ONE SONG to sing. Now, had it been The Rolling Stones, Beatles, Cream, etc. they would have at minimum, performed a medley. If it was Sinatra, Streisand, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, or Elvis, they'd still be singing. That a respected group such as The Dells, with so much history was allowed ONE lousy song is criminal. Shame on them for their lack of respect & insensitivity. They thoroughly disgust me! As for the media & other "experts", they are equally clueless. These "geniuses" consider The Dells to be a 50s Doo Wop group. These folks missed an awful lot of good music. According to them, I don't have any of these wonderful songs: The remakes of Stay In My Corner & Oh What A Night. Love Is So Simple, Always Together, Open Up My Heart, Nadine, Glory Of Love, The Love We Had, Just As Long As We're In Love, Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation, My Pretending Days Are Over, I Miss You, I Wish It Was Me You Loved or Love Is Missing From Our Lives. In addition, the following songs were figments of my imagination: Our Love, There Is, I Touched A Dream, Passionate Breezes, Thought Of You A Little Too Much, A Heart Is A House For Love, Please Don't Change Me Now, Since I Fell For You, O-O I Love You, Run For Cover, The Change We Go Through, Darling Dear, All About The Paper, Love Is Blue, Bring Back The Love Of Yesterday, I'm In Love, Strung Out Over You, Playing The Love Game & Can We Skip That Part. Wow, that's a lot of 60s-90s music from a group that obviously ceased to exist after the 50s. Who ever heard of these songs? These critics & their knowledge of Soul Music is so astounding, that I'm amazed. Too many of our Soul & R&B groups continually receive no credit for their contributions from these "experts" & I'm totally sick of it. The Dells are jewels & should be treated & respected as such! Phew Juice, You were on a roll there...I was rolling with ya..agree with all you said... When Marvin Junior sings..my heart stops...so much power & feeling. The harmonies have never weakened...all those years together. Maybe many of our younger members never delved(sorry) back into the early years to hear this wonderful group..the recent stuff has been poorly promoted. Check out the album discography and search out this wonderful group!!Amen Heikki www.soulcellar.co.uk Link:Great Voices Groups (Message edited by Soul-Brother on May 06, 2004) |

Hello again, Clark Sisters & Brothers Johnson! This trhread and the words by brother JuiceFree, touch my deeper feelings! I passed all the seventies suffering those stupidity by pretentious "knowledges" in music (authors of books, criticals,...). One time I buy a book about the story of Rock that includes soul music. I'm back from Barcelona to my town at the train, reading this book and speakin' with a friend who loves Todd Rundgren. Firsty I let the book to him and when he read "Todd R. is allways repeating the same formula", was very hungry and back to me the book saying "this book is a ful!!". After, when I read "I'ts possibly that Curtis Mayfield haved something to apporting after 1970", I open the window of the train and throwed the book!! And about The Dells, what I can say about this monster's group, example of longevity, evolution and high quality? I discovered it in my teens when buy the "Dells Vs. Dramatics" Lp (what a feeling in the 10 voices "Love Is Missing From Our Lives"!!) and after acquired some compilations with tunes more oldiers. In the 90's, one of the CD's i plays more was their "I Salute You / 40th Aniversary". "Listen Up Young Brothers" and the precious ballad writen by Bunny Sigler "Baby Don't Go Away Mad", captured my for many months! Long Live To The Mighty Mighty Dells! Peace & Soul Food |

Big ups to the Dells. A friend of mine had a CD - something like "Funk Goes to the Movies" - and there was a song the Dells did for a movie that I didn't remember hearing for. And this song was one of the funkiest, hard grooving things I've heard in a long, long time. The chart and instrumental performance was slamming, and the Dells fit over the top of that like a glove - a boxing glove the way they were hitting. I can't remember the title though. Does anyone have an idea what title I might be talking about? |

Hey, Detroit (Emerald's) Sister, aka dear freind SisDetroit! Many Thanks!! Nice pick. I see the members of the group have the same look that in the sleeve of "I Salute You", 11 years before! This guys are eternally youngs! If I find something interesting of Mighty Clouds I'll also send especially for you! One of my all time Philly-hard-to-find records is a Harris-Baker-Young Lp produced of The Dells ("They Say That It's Impossible But We Make It", i guess this is the title, ?) Peace & Soul Food! |

Hey, JuiceFree! I'm well, working and posting (this it's similar to a title of a sixtie's R&B song as "Tossin & Turnin", smile!). Thanks, hope you're also well. Thanks for the info. I have a list write by hand with many "hard to find" records. When I find one title, I includes two dozens more! (Neil Larsen "Sudden Samba", Cleveland Eaton "Half & Half", "Crusaders I",...). I have let the hamster in the draw table and in this moment i don't see where are! I post again after, friends! Peace! |

"There Is" the Dells- "Reach Out" song and it is listed in my top 20 songs of all time. They are the only group that comes close to the Four Tops. Marvin certainly is just about on par with the great Levi Stubbs.
