Hello, We are talking over on the Discuss Detroit Forum about the demolition. This was at one time Motown Studio "B". What songs were recorded here? |

Even though I've never been fortunate enough to visit the place, I'm really saddened by this - another piece of history being erased. Over on the Motown BB, there has been some discussion lately about the Golden World recordings, which now lie in the Uni/Motown vaults, particularly in hope of finally having them reissued. During this, I discovered that many quite serious Motown fans had absolutely no knowledge of Golden World, Ric Tic or any of their artists apart from Edwin Starr. (Needless to say, those of us whose interest extends beyond Diana Ross were more than happy to fill in some details.) We are fortunate that the master tapes still exist and are being cared for in New Jersey along with the Motown tapes. It's therefore rather sad that the place where some of Detroit's musical history was created is not considered similarly worthy of preservation. - I'm no big fan of Joni Mitchell, but I couldn't help recalling the words of Big Yellow Taxi... |

How in the hell could this happen???? There is just too much history for this to happen. Does anyone there have any sense of history??? This is only a huge part of Detroits history. I just don't understand how they could be so apathetic! Just what the world needs.....another f-----g mall!!! I don't live in Detroit, but this really angers me. Some things deserve to be respected, cherished & preserved. Obviously, some folks disagree with me. Sad! Juice |

Hello everyone. I spent a lot of time recording for Ed Wingate at Golden World. It was a great studio! It's too bad they are tearing it down. We cut a lot of funky records there. |

Well, I guess Detroit has to move ahead. Can't continue to live in the past. After all, Motown left the City to fin for themselves. That's why they were selling BBQ pits out of the bldg. I guess when they start tearing down the bldg on Woodward & I75, we will hear more objections. But now, as the people living in the "burbs" pass by that bldg, they talk bad about Detroit, instead of investing in the City. You hear them say I am a Detroiter (living in the burbs.) This somewhat clears them and puts them above the residents of Detroit As long as they don't mess with "Hitsville USA" on W. Grand Blvd. |

I want to put out this information on the Golden World master tapes that Motown may (or not) have. back in the mid-80's a Jobete Publishling accountant by the name of John Silva was put in charge of the CD reissue project, John reached out to severval heavy duty Motown collectors like myself for opinions , during our phone conversations I mentioned the Golden World masters and he told me that there was only a small box of tapes that was there. I do believe that's true because alot of that stuff was floating around town here in the late 60's. I think Motown used all the Golden World masters available on LP'S issued on Edwin Starr,San Remo Golden Strings and The Fantastic Four, other than that I know they had the GW LP on The Reflections....also remember that some GW/Ric-Tic releases were produced by Solid Hitbound(Don Davis) who I'm pretty sure got to retain ownership to. just a note about John Silva..the man died of cancer at just the age of 32, he treated me with respect and I miss talking with him. |

Just to add to the above... As SisDetroit can probably verify, that area of Davison & Dexter has not seen any kind of investment from anyone in a long, long time. While it's unfortunate to lose history anywhere, our past here in North America seems to be disposable, to point where Europeans cannot comprehend. The entire city of Detroit has so many historically significant buildings in various states of neglect, it really is depressing at times. Take this building for example: This building was once the World Headquaters of Ford, and behind this vacant building, in the vacant factory is where the moving assembly line was invented. This building changed the world, yet it sits neglected. While it is sad that the studio is going, it is at least for something positive. New develpoment in that area is a godsend. At lest it isn't being replaced with a vacant lot... |

Yes, I have to tell you that people seem to be so down on Detroit. Today, on MSMs website, there was a list of the 10 worst cities to date. Detroit is in the top 10! Detroiters, please tell me, why are these folks so down on Detroit??? As I've never been there, why all this negativity? I hope that someone can clue me in. |

Propert taxes are high. Car insurance is beyond belief. Crackheads harass you. Employment is real low. City services are slow if not non-existent...trash pick up etc. And we tear down buildings like Studio B! |

Property taxes are too high in order to support the City until the businesses are back here. You already know why the car insurance is high. Crackheads are in every city. Including the burbs, as well as the high societies all over the USA. I don't have any problem with the trash pickup in my neighborhood. I admire firefighters and EMS Technicians, but I have no respect for police. They should tear down bldgs like Studio B. Why should it stand there as an eye sore? The people who owned it, went to the burbs, or moved to LA. When it was active, we did not notice it being used,as we went on with our lives. But, we sure notice it not being used, just as we notice the Bldg on Woodward not being used. The citizens of Detroit, do not own those bldgs. The high class wealthy left those bldgs unattended and unused. It is those business people who moved, or those who say "I'm a Detroiter, living in the burbs" who did not take their bldgs with them, or pay to have them torn down. They refused to pay taxes, which made the County take over the property. That is why our property tax is so high. The citizens have to take up the slack for those who left their property, and we have to pay to have those bldgs to be torn down. |

I can't disagree with you sis...but there are so many buildings to tear down and it seems that the city almost targets buildings like studio b to tear down. So many landmarks of Detroit music are gone...Hastings Street, Fortune records, Graystone...while buildings like the packard plant are still standing. But you are right ecspecially about crackheads...I work in the burbs and I know first hand that they have some profesional, first rate, drug users out there! That said no corner in Royal Oak looks like Cass and Henry. |

There is either a Burger King or McDonald's right next door to Studio B. Businesses have been putting up these mini-malls within the City. They tore town Hastings to make way for I75. They tore down westside neighborhoods to make way for I96. These freeways were made so that burbs could come to and through the City without going down Gr. River, or Woodward. They definately wore out I94, and JohnCLodge. I cannot remember exactly where the Graystone was, but that area was deteriorating. Berry should have kept the Graystone. It seems that Mr. Gordy knows nothing of historic value. It took his sister to realize the significance (sp) of the Bldg on W. Grand Blvd. God bless her. |

I think these images are utterly devasting. United Sound was to be demolished 3 years ago but survived. From memory a Mr Johnny McCrea owns this property and he lives on the east side and not in the burbs. Andrew-Dvdmike, some of Detroits most significant sides were recorded in that building and can be found on our Golden World tour. This piece of history is gone forever. Forget the blame. THIS IS TRAGIC. David (Message edited by david meikle on May 06, 2004) |

Ritchie, I'm not sure I'm capable of listing all the songs that came out of that facility. For starters, you can list most of the big Golden World hit records. Many Motown hits were completed at Studio B. At the time it was just part of a machine that cranked out records. |

I suppose that is true Ritchie. After the acquisition of GW, the studio was used primarily for vocals and horn and string over-dubs. Songs such as Papa Was A Rolling Stone were completed there. With the exception of their first album, the majority of Rare Earth's songs were recorded entirely at Studio B. |

Just went by the studio...It's true and sad. The inside is gutted by now...none of those acoustic tiles hanging around. The studio is sort of connected to the adjacent strip mall. Its hard to tell if the building will be totally torn down or if the shell will be used for retail. |

Sis, They may have built the freeways so that surburbanites (like me) could avoid the surface streets, but the joke must have been on us since due to constant construction on the freeways, we can't use them anyway. With the EB Jeffries closed past Telegraph, I've been trying to explain to some of my neighbors who work in Dearborn that they can just take 6-Mile/McNichols to Grand River to the Southfield Freeway, it is quicker than Hines Drive, and it doesn't flood when it rains. They get these strange looks on their faces like they didn't realize that a mile road could go that far east. Regards, Ken |

Livonia Ken - That is funny. Perhaps they thought that just 8mile goes that far. Make sure you let them know that there is a police station on the corner of Gr. River & 6Mile. (LOL) I am so happy I retired and no longer have to jet down Jeffries to go downtown every morning. Now, I just cruise down Plymouth to Gr. River remembering how I used to travel all over the City in the 70's going bar hopping. I was cruising down 12th St. last week wondering how in the heck did that small street have all those clubs, with all that traffic back in the 60's. I believe Hastings St. was much bigger than 12th St. |

Juice...it is sad to hear that Detroit is considered on of the 10 Worst Cities, but I'm really not overly surprised. Basic city services such as public transportation, road maintenance, trash collection, snow removal, etc. leave much to be desired when compared to other cities. The public school system is in total disarray. Crime is still a major issue, too. Add to that a declining, less affluent population and the resulting smaller tax base/revenue as well as the virtual total elimination of nearly all manufacturing jobs in the city and you begin to see the picture. These problems are certainly overblown by the media (both local and national), but unfortunately, there is an element of validity to them. Lastly, don't believe ALL the negative hype, Detroit still has an awful lot of very positive things to offer as well. |

During my recent visit, I didnt find the city to be as bad as people have envisioned it to be, and I found the people I met to be warm and friendly. All major cities have their pros and cons and I found Detroit to be a city on the rise. BTW, there used to be a motel on Woodward just north of the Donovan building(Motown) on the other side of the street next to that church. I stayed there in 1968 when I played at the 20 grand with the Vibrations. The site is now occupied with newer town houses. |

TO ALL DETROITERS!!!! Let me clarify my question. There was bad things said about Detroit. The article that I was reffering to however, was in reference to the dating scene. Looking at my post, I must say that illiteracy is a bad thing. The title of the article was: "10 Best & Worst Cities To Date" I should have made it clear that they were referring to Detroits' dating scene being among the 10 worst. I apologize for not being clear about this. As these folks are so down on Detroit, I was wondering why they were dogging the dating scene as well? Things just can't be that bad, I don't believe for one moment that Detroit is any worse than any other American city in that regard. Can anyone clarify these knuckleheads statement? Hi SisDetroit,Ron,Ray Monette,Juice et al,long time no hear. It,s very interesting to hear all your comments and great memories about inner city Detroit but what i,m sure is especially of concern to music lovers(definetly on this side of the pond)is the in-progress demolition of the G.W. building on Davison,as Dennis Coffey said so many great sides cut there from 65 onwards.Thank God 4 sites like S.D.those of us who never actually went have the images forever in our hearts.OOH BOY,THERE,S NOTHING NO SWEETER THAN LOVE,SAY IT,PLEASE LET ME IN(i wish they had -around about August1966).A sad loss R.I.P.-Golden World(again)Forgive my ramblings--i,ve just finished a 12 Hour night shift.Love and regards 2 all.-Tony.C. |

Anyone who has never visited Detroit is missing out big time. "War" has just come on in my Internet cafe in Spain! Ill bet it was recorded in Studio B. If anyone can save a couple of pieces (however small) of the interior of the building Id be obliged and forever grateful. Golden World will live on in the UK.

John, you are right. I'm quite certain the rythym track was cut at Studio A. |

I briefly visited Detroit many years ago during the Christmas Holidays. As I stated my visit was very brief, but I will never forget that visit. I met people as soon as I landed at the airport, they were so warm and friendly. I was invited to their home and they treated as if they had known me all of their lives. I never went to any of the studios, and I'm sorry that I didn't. Detroit holds such a prominent role in the making of history, the migrants who came with their families to work in the auto industry and as the creator of the music that we all love. Detroit has given to us the sound of music that is known all around the world. It is ironic that as I'm typing this post, the song "Can't Help Myself"(Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) is playing in the background on the TV. Detroit history is still alive and will continue forever. |

Ron, I ate at Biff's many times when I was involved in night sessions at Studio A. We would take a break and spend time there. |

Does anyone have any pix of Ed Wingate? I have heard so much about him from my colleagues especially F.E., but I would sure love to see a photo of him. |

The building on 12th street is still there. It is connected to a mid-rise apartment building. The building itself is in good shape and probably wont be torn down any time soon. |

The Ford Building pictured above is located in Highland Park, not Detroit. There is a historical marker in front of it. Do the Fords still own this property? If so, isn't it their responsibilty to maintain it? It doesn't seem to be in too bad a shape, only vacant. Maybe I will drive past it tomorrow and get a snapshot of the historical marker to post for reading. It's too bad about Golden World, but you can't save everything. As they say... "The world is in a constant state of flux" - Herodotus(?). "Everyday things change, and some old ideas (or buildings in this case) give way to some new" - Smokey. |

Cool Ju...the Ford Highland Park complex is owned by the Ford Motor Co., not the Ford family personally. I did some consulting work for Ford a few years ago, and at that time, the Highland Park factory buildings were being used for storage. It would be nice to see some of that property restored, but it probably won't happen. |

Let's all hope that Ford Auditorium is restored for the concerts like they used to have there. Teddy Pendergrass, the Dramatics, gospel concerts, battle of the groups, etc. |

Eli I hope to be able to upload a recent pic of both Ed and JoAnne in the next few days. Thanks for raising the question as it has been read by a close relative. I have seen a pic of Ed in his heyday but never JoAnne. David
