Do you mean the Honey Cone? Brenda Payton is no longer living. She passed a few years back from cancer. Honey Cone who recorded for Hot Wax label-- Carolyn Willis had worked as one of Doris Jackson's Shirelles for a while. Edna Wright, sister of Darlene Love, is still married to producer Greg Perry. She occasionally sings backups for Cher. She often performs as Honey Cone. I don't know about the other memeber, Shelly Clark, I think is her name. The Fuzz? No idea.

What's up NY-Dell!!! Now when you're talking about The Fuzz, you're talking right up my alley. I fell in love with these girls the first time that I heard I Love You For All Seasons. This song came out when I was 10 & mature boy that I was, I had a crush on a very pretty 19 year-old. Alas, my love was never consumated, but, I still love this song. I'm the proud owner of 2 copies of this LP. I also love their version of Like An Open Door, the singing & music is wonderful. The only problem with Open Door is that the bridge is dull, flat & goes nowhere. It dulls the impact of the song. I am a fan of their vocal, nonetheless. The harmonies are so sweet, that it amazes me that these ladies only had 1 LP release. I'm still looking for their Roulette 45 Mr Heartbreak & Miss Tears. Shiela Young had such a gorgeous voice & I still can't believe that these girls just vanished without a trace. I saw in a thread in the old forum that the girls were to perform at a concert in L.A. I never heard anything about it. The only one of the girls that I heard recording after they broke was Val Gilliam, who recorded some 12"s on Sutra back in the 80s. I wish that someone could give us some info as to what's going on with the girls & how to contact them. Theirs is a story that I would like to hear. Juice |

Nosey has another story to tell: My best girlfriend and partner in crime, Shirley, worked for Bayuk Cigar Factory @ '66 in Philly. Brenda was working there as well and overheard my friend singing one day. Brenda was forming her group and asked Shirley to join them. I talked Shirley out of it as we were doo woping ourselves. I fed Shirley some bull like, "you'll be a backup singer instead of the lead that you are" and "they ain't nobody!" Shirley turned down Brenda's offer and about a year later at the Uptown Shirley went upside my head when she realized that was Brenda on stage singing. (In the voice of Marlon Brando in the Waterfront), Shirley exclaimed to me, "I COULDA BEEN A TABULATION! Also, Brenda was engaged to my buddy Dennis who was in 'Nam when she blew up. She got involved with somebody else and eventually married him. She and Dennis stayed close friends to the end with Dennis eventually leading her to Christ. Her final days were extremely sad and painful. The neglect she endured, I will not repeat because it is second hand information although my source is credible. NO ONE should have been neglected in that way. Rest on Brenda, your suffering is over.

Good story, however, I always thought the Tabula- tions were the band that played with her and all-male. Am I correct? |

Randy you're right the Tabulations were guys; however, Shirley was asked early on to be in her group. Who knows if Shirley had joined, the Tabulations would have had another female in it. Alas, Shirley took my bad advice and didn't take Brenda up on her offer. btw, my girl Shirley sings with a popular Philly gospel group, the Philadelphia Southernaires and can still blow. |

Okay, I was like 6yrs old when "I love you for all seasons" came out. My mother had the 45 and would play it and sing to it! I always liked that song and often wondered why in later years you would never hear it on oldies stations. About 3 or 4 years ago a station that plays Today's R&B & Classic Soul started playing it and I could not believe it. Whenever I hear it, I think about my mother!!!!(smile) |

Juice.........LOL. I am realizing that we are all getting older, but then you are only as old as you feel!!!! I guess I feel that way sometimes, because of so many things that I remember, especially talking to everyone here, regarding music, tv, foods, etc. They all seem so vivid, in my mind, but they were a long time ago! The good thing is that we still remember!!!! |

Yes that's true Charise, so true. Those long term memories do stay with you. I can still remember events that happened when I was 3. I can still plainly recall our house, the neighborhood, different events & quite vividly at that. Sometimes I'll recall something & my mother will say: "You remember that!!!" So many otherwise insignificant memories that mean nothing to anyone other than me. As for my short term memory....if I could only remember where I put those stupid car keys. Hmmm..... oh I forgot, I don't drive |

Exactly Juice, it seems that way, the things you remember that mean something to you and no one else. I too, will bring things up and my father will say "I forgot about that, how do you remember all that?" I even remember at least two dreams I had when I was 3 or 4!!! Why don't you drive, is that by choice???? |

I'm sorry to Brenda Payton's passing. Every one that I know who played shows with Brenda & The Tabulations always felt they should have gotten their due. They've should have been on the same status as Patti LaBelle & The Blue Bells and 3 Degrees. Wonder B and Manny thanks for showing your pics. Cause if you fellas wouldn't, I wouldn't have remembered exactly what LP'S you all are speaking of. I lost all my collection. I'm working from memory. Everybody I knew who was a traveling singer, vocal group or musician had The Fuzz in their collections, they we're pretty decent group. That's how I got to listen to a lot of later and earlier records that some folk in Chi had accidently forgotten about, kinda. I miss hearing these LP's. |

Yes Charise, it's pretty much my choice. I never had the temperment to suffer fools easily. Especially reckless fools driving a 2 ton vehicle. When the drug dealer thing came into vogue, everyone & their mother was driving. I just never got into it after that. When my wife was alive, she did the driving. I just never got around to driving, there was always something else that occupied my time. However, it's time to re-evaluate my stance. Public transportation has become too limiting. |

FYI, Brenda and the Tabulations were originally a self contained band of four guys and Brenda out front. It became a girl trio when Van Mc Coy came on board as producer, and in fact he sang most of the background vocals, and sometimes with Dianne Destry of Faith, Hope and Charity. Brenda was one of the sweetest and kindest people in the world. |

Great info Eli, It always seem to puzzle me as to why a male backup group and switching over to a female group. Anyway, I always thought she was the bomb. P.S. How did your sessions go with The Flamming Embers in Detroit, E. |

Hi Don, The F.E. sessions were simply magical. It was just the beginning of the project and we more than likely continue with more vocal sessions in Nashville, as Jerry Plunk F.E.'s fantastic, soulful vocalist lives near there and it will be conducive to creativity at this time. |
