Hey Mel, My mom had exactly 1 Charlie Rich record in her collection which was Lonely Weekends/Everything I Do Is Wrong. As a kid my favorite was the B-Side! I guess it has more kid accessible lyrics. I SEE A GREAT BIG SIGN ON A ONE WAY STREET GOIN' DOWN THE WRONG WAY LOOK WHO I MEET I SEE A BIG POLICEMAN WALKING HIS BEAT EVERYTHING I DO IS WRONG! See...very kid friendly. |

I've mentioned Charlie Rich on both the recent country soul and blue-eyed soul threads. I've got this double CD anthology, "Feel Like Going Home: The Essential Charlie Rich", and it truly is indespensible. The late Sam Phillips was quoted many times saying that Charlie had the most natural musical ability of all the early Sun Records trailblazers, which of course included Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins. Country, jazz, soul, rock and roll, blues --Charlie could do it all very very well. |

Another Charlie Rich track that the Northern folks might dig: "Dance of Love" (the same song as done by the Jetsons and Tangeers on Pumpkin...do I have the artists correct there?). It's on one of his Smash LPs and also on the hard-to-get "Complete Smash Sessions" CD on Mercury. Charlie's entire Smash output ranks among the greatest blue-eyed soul ever recorded (I should add that he was one of my all-time favorite singers, no matter what genre he was dabbling in). Best, Mark |
