Ok Jimmy, I'll give it a shot. The Original Peaches was Francine Barker of the Date girl group The Sweet Things.Around 1967, she stopped performing on shows & for live shows, Marlene Mack filled in for her. Herb Feem became a Policeman in 1970 & returned to music in 1975. The third Peaches was Linda Green. They were a team from 1975-1986, when Herb again, retired from music. The fourth Peaches was Patrice Hawthorne, who teamed up with Herb in 1992, when he again tried a comeback. So, here's the list: Francine Barker: 1966-1970 Marlene Mack: 1967-1970 (Live Performances Only) Linda Green: 1975-1986 Patrice Hawthorne: 1992-Present Juice |

I saw Peaches & Herb on a R&B package tour in the spring of 1968--Jackie Wilson, Impressions, Bar- bara Mason, 5 Stairsteps, Emory & Dynamics, MC was Gorgeous George. Many others were on this bill. It was Marlene Mack who performed with Herb and their set was really good. "Close Your Eyes" really brought the house down.

I remember Herb's last name to be Fame, Juice. (?). Randy, I saw them live at a few shows in the 60's. I liked Francine Baker's voice the best. I remember them at the Apollo when they walked thru the backstage door, Herb stood out wearing a green suit with green allegator shoes (the Floresheim style) that was so popular back then. S.S. |

Oh, "Tony the R", U are a "Riot". I'll tell U what. I'll give U the last name of CANDY from THE KISSES. It's NELSON. The last PEACHES who I saw was young enough to be HERB's greatgrandaughter. By the way, old Herb's next Peaches should be the one... the only... the too tall... Miss RuPaul! "Shake Your Groove Thing". Won't Herb be surprised? Or, maybe he won't! ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Reminder U all: Plz. do the "Countdown to M-45" survey. See the file! "Love Child" of SUPREMES fame chose -- no, not The Supremes but -- GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS (a competing "girl group")! I like that in a way, that takes soul... and gutz! And, not to be outdone, our "Jimmy Mack" of M.R.V. fame chose "The Supremes". Go figure!.... I mean, go V-O-T-E! (Message edited by Stonewall on May 04, 2004) |

On the agency website that employs them make no mention of another singer other than Patrice. I'll try to dig up some info, as he was on a VH1 special a few years ago with yet another Peaches. If I can dig up the tape, we may learn the identity of the latest "Peaches". If I remember correctly, it might have been his daughter, unless I have my Disco show profiles mixed up. |

When I saw the PBS Special with the present Peaches, she looked like she would rather be somewhere else. There was no chemistry between the two of them. The age difference definitly showed. When I see a duo between a male and female my mind imagines that they are really connected, and the song is about their connection(love). This pairing IMHO had no connection whatsoever; it appeared to be very platonic, almost fake. Marvin and Tammi had the connection that made you feel they really cared about each other. |

Vonnie, you are correct...however,I don't think Peaches & Herb were ever in the same league as Marvin & Mary, Marvin & Kim, or Marvin & Tammi.I did like some of Peaches & Herbs 45's.Actually, I thought the young lady was Herbs daughter but I thought she has a good voice(and looks) & did a good job on the PBS show. |

Looks like Wonder likes Linda Green Tony R: anytime my friend! Yes, she did a superb job. I was too young to remember Marlene. I never saw them live, so I never saw her. No one seems to remember Francine Barkers solo recording. I hav an MP3 of it. I don't recall it's name off-hand. I believe that it's title has something to do with "DJ" something or other. Vonnie, personally speaking I thought that it was ridiculous. It looked like Father Time with his student! The age difference is too great & when I heard them sing, I'm thinking "re-united what" Not to be rude but, considering the age difference, the only thing that I can imagine them reuniting is him reuniting her with a bottle or rattle & her helping him reunite with his Doans Pills or his Ben Gay. It's simply not believable when it appears that you're singing to your niece, or worse, your daughter. Poor choice of Peaches Herbie old bean. In this case you must definitely, pardon the pun....cling to the Peaches! I guess that those royalties are still coming in, she sho iz a fine filly. Herbie, you's sho NAAAASTY!! My hero!!!!! |

I only remember Francine Barker. She may not have had the "classic" good looks of the woman in the photo, but she was very good looking, too. But, more importantly, she had one of those naturally beautiful voices that can send you to Heaven. She also knew how to use her voice as an instrument. Of course, being such a great singer is a very good advantage, but she also had the good luck to work with one of the greatest writers and producers ever, Van McCoy. For a guy like me, who likes sweet melodies and solid, smooth but soulful voices, she was perfection (in a similar vein to Barbara Lewis, Barbara Green, Dee Dee Warwick, Erma Franklin, Gloria Lynne, and Valerie Simpson-very soulful, but also very smooth). I wished to have someone like her sing me to sleep every night. The best evidence of this great combination of sweetness, smoothness and a soulful enough vocal is heard on the following cuts: "Don't Come Looking For Me" (w/Sweet Things)-Date 1504 "Baby's Blue" (w/Sweet Things)-Date 1522 "Don't You Know Love When You See It"-Columbia 44614 I could have easily listed "Baby's Blue" as one of "My five all-time favourite records" in one of the alternate 5 combos. As all of those 80 others were, it is perfect.

I think Van McCoy and Ed Kapralik were both looking for a love song duet team for Van's great songs such as he sang together with Kendra Spotswood and others ("Jack and Jill", etc.). Herb Fame and Francine Barker both worked for McCoy and Kapralik at Columbia/Date (Barker with The Sweet Things). They were both hand picked for that job because of their voices. They probably hadn't even known each other. Herb was far too old for Francine. She was just a kid. Herb had had a pretty good release on Date before they were teamed up ("You're Messin' Up My Mind"). When they broke up in 1970, Francine only had the one solo release on Columbia (as far as I know). |

It must have been tough to pretend you're lovey-dovey with someone you hardly know and don't feel that way about. That, and being a young kid, who probably had some stage fright too, may have been the reason. From what I remember about the music business, I would bet that the innocent, nice young girl probably got turned off to a lot of elements of it. That might have led to her not having the stick-to-it-iveness to gut it out and make a career. I hope she had a family and nice life after she quit The Business. Toni -- U don't wanna be "Out In The Streets", do ya? What's missing from your MARVIN duets list above, stating correctly that PEACHES (whichever #) & HERBIE were not in the league with MARVIN & MARY, MARVIN & KIM and MARVIN & TAMMI? What's missing is analagous to naming SANTA CLAUS' reindeers and leaving out RUDOLPH! Quick, who sang "Rudolph" on the "P.S." (I never spell out his naughty -- since the murder -- name any more) Xmas album? Was it DARLENE LOVE? Was it THE RONETTES? Was it BOB B. SOXX & THE BLUE JEANS? Was it THE CRYSTALS? Was it CANDY & THE KISSES? Or was it "P.S." himself (like he did on "Silent Night")? MARVIN & DIANA -- the biggest star by far of all the girls -- is who was missing from your list. I'm very surprised at U. Plus, right after Mary, MPG also dueted with that "unreleased" woman. Soon, Diana will be the only survivor of Mr. GAYE's recording partners. Stonewall.......... Topic: MARVIN GAYE's six singing partners. TONY "are"! The MARVIN & DIANA duets =were= "distant" -- they were recorded in two different states (CA & MI) about 2,000 miles apart and then mixed!! This technique is not unusual, as U know. How about the SINATRA duets? Hey, Ol' Blue Eyes! Nonetheless, M&D's "You Are Everything" and "Love Twins", as just two examples, are supreme. As far as that other MPG duet woman goes, we thought it was "After MARY" left in 1964 when the M&M two duets were simultaneously out on the charts but Marvin recorded his first duet w/ KIM in 1964! And Marvin also recorded w/ OMA UMA in 1964? Three different duet partners in one year! That is a music history 'record'. Wow!!! Plus, psychologically, WE (I actually consulted w/ 3 other Boarders via e-mail) were trying to put AMA as far in the past as possible. By the way, whereas Juice had a problem w/ EMA's voice, I had a problem w/ IMA's appearance vis-a-vis the sexually healing GAYE. It just looked unreal and unbelievable -- and it wuz. No wonder M&O had zero public appearances together. Personally, my favorite Marvin duets were with his first partner(s)... MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS, yielding three Top 10 singles. I especially luv "Hitch Hike" -- besides "Stubborn Kind Of Fella" and "Pride And Joy". There's no question that his best by far -- anyone's best -- were his legendary recordings w/ TAMMI TERRELL. As U know, T.R., "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing". At the time in 1964, I thought that "After Mary" exited stage left, Marvin should have been paired w/ Miss BRENDA HOLLOWAY. * * * * * 40 Years Ago Today: "What's The Matter With U Baby?", "My Guy" and "Once Upon A Time" -- all at the same time!!! At one point, ALL 3 in the Top 10 simultaneously. Sounds like some kind of record there.

Tony, you're right about that. The fact that they didn't even RECORD together shows in the feel of that LP. The closest to passion or chemistry they have on that LP is on My Mistake. The songs sounded so milquetoast & polite, totally devoid of passion. It was cool, no sparks overall. Actually, this LP was so boring & bland, it could have been a Richie-Ross LP. I hated Endless Love as well. If that song was a shoe, it would still have no soul (sole). They had pretty much a mutual dislike for one another. Most of us have read of Marvins' feelings toward Diana & the "Star" treatment. Marvin had an ample ego of his own & was a star in his own right, riding high off of the successes of What's Goin' On & Let's Get It On. He definitely wasn't feeling Dianas' "I'm A Star" routine & reportedly delighted in bustin her literal "balls". As I recall, she was pregant at the time & he enjoyed inhaling a certain all-natural product & blowing the smoke in the air, while they were in the recording studio. Due to this, it was arranged for them to record their parts separately. The most fitting description of this affair was the LP cover. They are posed facing back to back, facing away from one another. Pretty accurate description of the LP...180 degrees out of sync! Juice

Juice, I hear ya about "Endless Love"...IMHO one of the worst records ever to be released by the "real" Motown.I think Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye truly loved each other as fellow original Motown artist but by the time they made the LP together they were both into their own "star" roles with their own quirks. |

I agree with you Juice, there was no chemistry between Marvin and Diana on "Endless Love". There was more chemistry between Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald singing "On My Own", even though they were videotaped in separate locations. Figure that one out. |

Don was correct. Peaches and Herb sang "United" first, and later did "Reunited" a few years later, as sort of an "answer" or "continued story" song. |

Tony, it is the same record. The Intruders did it first. They charted on 7/9/66. P&H version didn't chart until 6/1/68. They did a "continuation of the story" Reunited in 1979. I hope this helps! (Message edited by Juicefree20 on May 18, 2004) |
