I have a top 1,000 that are all "perfect" and excellent. But the first 5 favourite songs I love to death, that come to my mind are:

Grand Spanish Lady-Royal Ravens
My Saddest Hour-Five Keys
Liberation-Afro Blues Quintet +1
Since I Fell For You-Lenny Welch
Young Boy-Barbara Green

I could list 200 other groups of 5 I like just as much, and not repeat one of them.
Alternates (NO LESS loved by me)

I Worry 'Bout You-Arthur Prysock
Walkin' By Myself-Jimmy Rogers
Love Woke Me Up This Morning-Brenda Holloway
I'm Gonna love You So-Dukays
Nobody Knows-Stars Of Bethlehem

Another group (just as loved):

I'll Come Running-Carolyn Crawford
Golden Teardrops-Flamingos
Up On The Roof-Drifters
Mama Didn't Lie-Jan Bradley
What Time Is It?-Jive Five

Here's another(same quality):

Egyptian Love-Metros
Found True Love-Billy Butler & 4 Enchanters
Chicago Bound-Jimmy Rogers
Listen Here-Eddie Harris
Never Felt like This Before-Quails

Here's another:

When Someone's Good To You-Carolyn Crawford
I'm Yours-Flamingos
Cool Breeze-Daylighters
Take Five-Dave Brubeck Quartet
Oh No, Not My Baby-Maxine Brown

One last group:

Serenade In Blue-Gloria Lynne
I'm Not Mad Anymore-Barbara Acklin
My World Is On Fire-Jimmy Mack
The Glory Of Love-Five Keys
Baby, Baby, All The Time-Superbs

And it goes on and on.

Robb, did U see MAXINE BROWN sing and perform "Oh, No, Not My Baby" on the P.B.S. special just last year? Maxi looked great with that huge smile and she performed that song down to a "t", like it was just released the day before. This is the 40th anniversary year of the song. It is so timeless. That great song was written by the wonderful CAROLE "Tapestry" KING. It is greatly loved by Maxi. By the way, y'all, Maxi sold her house in Long Island many years ago, moved to midtown Manhattan for many years and now happily lives in Harlem.

"I'm so glad that I just kept on saying, oh, no not my baby, no, no, no, no, not my sweet baby."

I didn't see her perform it on the PBS special, but I think I remember seeing her lip-sink to it on a TV show in 1964. I also like her other Goffin-King song from that session,-"It's Gonna Be Allright". Two excellently written songs and excellently sung, as well.

Speaking of Maxine Brown, my next two favourite songs of hers were the two written and arranged by Van McCoy: "Gotta Find A Way" and "I Wonder What My Baby's Doing Tonight". That's no surprise, as she really shined when she sang good material. She suffered from having to sing a lot of relatively weak material. "I Cry Alone" was great (Bachrach), One In A Million and If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody-Rudy Clark, Your're In Love, Never Had It So Good and One Step At A Time (Ashford/Simpson), Plum Outa Sight (Bridges/Knight/Eaton) were all great. But, had she worked with Motown, Curtis Mayfield, Carl Davis, Van McCoy, Jerry Ragovoy, Brill Building writers and the like, REGULARLY; she would have been a far bigger star than she was.

Hey, SS, -I remember "C'est La Vie" by the Wrens in 1954. I don't remember The Five Keys singing that. Was it a later cut on King or Capitol? Was it aCapitol album cut? Or was it an unreleased cut on CD, that was never released on vinyl?
Good choices, by the way. I like all that stuff, too.

RobbK;
Sorry I have that info on their CD in storage.
Rudy West kills it, beautiful! Other greats on that CD are "Close Your Eyes", "Out Of Sight Out Of Mind", & the fabulous "The Gypsy".
I haven't heard The Wrens version, at least I don't recall doing so. I think The 5 Keys with Rudy recorded it before 1954.

Thanks for the info S.S. and Lenny. Yes, The Wrens was in 1956. I have an awful lot of Five Keys records on Capitol including a couple of EPs. But somehow, I missed that one with C'est La Vie. I bet it's really good. I hope it's more like a "Close Your Eyes" Five Keys Capitol record rather than like "Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind", with all that shmaltzy (cheesy) heavy pop orchestration.

Can't argue with your list, again, Lenny. Except I've never heard The Billy Vera.
Nice list S.S. -No way Five Keys recorded a song for Capitol BEFORE 1954 -Or even in 1954. But The Wrens' version was 1956. That song was a standard, and sung by several groups.

RobbK;
I stand corrected on the timeline, like i said I don't have it in front of me. To me "C'st La Vie" was heads above the other 'Keys tunes', just my personal taste but you'll have to hear it for yourself:-)! Thanks for the comp. Your lists always amaze me!

lennytone;
Wow! Great ones on your list as well! Excellent choices. So many records to little space to include them all LOL!

Take Care,

"The Wayward Wind" is a really beautiful and ethereal. It always struct me as being so different, pensive and soothing. A very smart choice on your part, Michael. Is the other name "C...." your last name or your partner or what? I don't understand but I guess U want us to know as it's printed. Thanx for participating in the upcoming "M-45" survey.

By the way, I consider the smooth souled "Just My Imagination" as by: Eddie Kendricks & The Temptations. That #1 song decided EK to go solo!

Stonewall:

The Cleo Harvey is my mother's name, who died in 1986. Years ago when I first bought a computer I signed up with MSN. At the time they only allowed one handle, which I didn't know. So, I signed up and was stuck with the name. At first I was bothered, but then decided it was kind of nice that my mom's name was going all over the world. So, I kept it... Michael makes sure that people here know I am a man.

For Michael/C.H.

Wow, that really is interesting and significant. It's ironic that I happened to ask at this time of year. So, in the spelling I would make the small "h" into a capital "H" to be correct for your Mother's last name. With this new and improved Board, U can now do that yourself simply by going to "Edit Profile". That is a very nice gesture U did keeping the name. In 1986, I lost someone very near and dear to me -- killed in a fatal motorcycle crash into a brick building in da Bronx! The date was April 28, 1986. At the time he truly was the "Leader Of The Pack" and very unfortunately with the exact same fate! He was only 33.

------------------------------ ------------------------------ -----------------------------

Regarding THE SUPREMES and M-45, I am very nervous about their appearance w/o a real 3rd Supreme. What a wasted shame -- especially with SCHERRIE right there in the audience. It's ridiculous! They say that MARI was behind that!?

Ooooh, this is so tough! See, my two favorite eras in music are tied...Motown 1964-1973, and then house and r&b from '88-'92! Plus much in between, but
hardly anything since! I will try:

1) It's My Turn * Diana Ross

2) Secret Rendezvous * Karyn White

3) More * Andy Williams

4) Someday We'll Be Together * Diana Ross & The Supremes, featuring Johnny Bristol

5) Bless You * Martha Reeves & The Vandellas

6) Islands In The Stream * Dolly & Kenny

7) God Bless America * Kate Smith

8) The Secret Garden * Quincy Jones, etc.

9) Just Because * Anita Baker

10) You Won't See Me Cry * Wilson Phillips

11) On The Verge * Collin Raye

12) Where Love Lives * Alison Limerick

13) Get Ready * The Temptations

14) You Can't Deny It * Lisa Stansfield

15) It's In There * Jennifer Holliday

Of course, this is all presupposing that there is a one song per artist limit. Otherwise, Diana would clog up the top 10 on my list with: "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Missing You", "Mirror, Mirror", "Remember Me", and scores of others!
