I Need You which was the B side of Otis Leavills 1969 hit I Love You. I Need You is a killer ballad, sounds like classic Eugene Record!!!!

There are literally thousands I could list,as I generally have liked be sides better (probably in 60-65% of 45s. But, I'm already in danger of losing my career and ending up homeless in the streets because of spending too much time on this forum-so I'll only list a few.

"Don't Come Looking For Me" by The Sweet Things, on the flip of You're My Lovin' Baby". It was a very soulful, slow mid-tempo, while the A side was a typical Philles-style Girls Group sound. I often prefer the ballad side to Northern Soul Stompers-to wit: "Never In A Million Years" -Honey Bees' ballad flip of stomper "Let's Get Back Together". I prefer Frank Wilson's "Sweeter As The Days Go By" to Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" I much preferred the doo-woppy ballad "I Love You So" by The Crows to the popular "Gee". I also preferred "Cross Over The Bridge" by the Chords to "Sh-Boom". I often like the ballad side of dance records, as in the case of a couple Bobby Freeman records on King. That wasn't true, however, in the case of the sweet ballad "Forgotten Spring" by The Martells, when uncharacteristically (and unbelievably), I preferred the novelty jump blues side "Va Va Voom"!!! I guess there's no accounting for taste! Apparantly, there are so many different factors involved in the degree one likes a given song, that it is difficult for even a person who "thinks" he or she knows his(her) taste, that it can't be predicted accurately.

Hi RobbK;
I have an original Chord's "Sh-Boom" 45 on Cat label from 1954 (?) if I remember the year correctly. The B-side of it is "Little Maiden" which I love. Yours is different?

Hi, S.S. "Little Maiden" was by far the more common release. If I remember correctly, the record was released first with "Cross Over The Bridge" a fairly sweet mid-tempo, and it was recalled, and released for the bulk of its run with the novelty "Little Maiden" on the flip. I have both. I don't really like "Little Maiden". "Cross Over The Bridge" was a standard, but I remember it best by The Flamingos in late 1953. But I like The Chords' version a lot, too.

While I'm back on this B-side thread,- I'll add one: I really like "More than A Dream" by Eivets Rednow (Stevie Wonder playing Harmonica) much better than the A side, "Alfie" (which was also quite good).

What's up STONEWALL!!!

From your list, I can tell that you're a Motown kinda guy. Man, you've got Detroit in your soul. You've got a jones man, you're hooked my friend. As I read your choices, I can hear the sound of automobiles being assembled & the smell of new car interior in the air. You're hooked! You've got a crank shaft on your back. You've got the Motor City blues. You're so Motown, your heart must bleed oil! That's a good thing, a very good thing. I admire your loyalty! :-) :-)

The increasingly daring JUICE MAN -----

Mr. JUICE, U are, thank Brooklyn, too much -- even more than anyone on this board knows. Where was I born? Well, U know, but maybe they don't. Brooklyn! They know that U are "too much" but not that U are "really too much". As U know, I personally deeply 'appreciate' that. In all objectivity, your above post is one of your most analytical, most analogical, most witty and most double entendre'd bestest posts ever. "Heart bleeds oil". Wow. I don't know about that "crank shaft on the back". That one sounds like it could be familiar butt perhaps misplaced. And, as U posted elsewhere a few days ago, "Looks live things are about to liven up again at S.D.F." U sho 'nuff easily predicted that one rite. Bi the way, I observed that U posted in the daytime yda. Did U have the day off from the P.O. or just call in....?

------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ----------------

Now that I covered the more important matters, let's do the music. U are correct about Motown & Me. It helped make me realize who I was. "Amen" (get the new "Joined Together" c.d. by DRS & TT) go rite there. Those "B" sides to me -- and many others -- were like "A" sides. Plus, many of them helped describe and guide my life. And ditto to the places I went. "Alllrite" go rite there.

STONEWALL:

I've got to agree with you. Many of those Motown B sides were on par with many A sides. They didn't release many throwaways & they definitely retained the craftsmanship of the A sides. As we well know, many companies didn't follow suit. I'm glad that Motown did.

As you know The Chancellor has skills with the B sides of every soul song imaginable...lol...he hooked me up a B sides cd by the Jackson 5, ALL of their B sides released and other B sides to other songs...I dont have the cds with me right now, but I will repost. Some are just classics, and may have been a hit as well as the A side.

Cali Luv, your list is A-1, too. All of those songs by the great Miss HOLLOWAY, I played on my 45-record player on a nightly basis. U have "Operator" and "I'll Always Love U" listed first (for the "B" side) when those two are actually the "A" sides. Take a look. Wasn't it interesting that Motown put two MARY WELLS songs that they gave to BRENDA back-to-back, "Operator" and "I'll Be Available"? That was proof positive that M-town paassed the torch from Mary after she left "M" to Brenda. Ultimately, the torch was passed to solo DIANA!

P.S. Did U see the new photo of Brenda H. on the file S.D.F. file "Countdown to MOTOWN 45"? Of course, BH was there and lookin and dressin' great. More and better pix to come. Check it out. Also, U can vote!

As Stonewall & Juice & others have pointed out...no record company gave us record buyers more "bang for the buck" then Motown. You knew when you bought that 45 that the unheard flip would be either almost/as good as/or better then the A side.Thank you Motown artists, muscians, writers, producers, quality control & ofcourse Berry Gordy.

Calliluv: I like "Just The Way You Are" as B to "I Miss You Baby" by Marv Johnson, even better than the other 45. It makes me sick to think of what we missed because he had that UA contract through mid 1964. I wish he'd had it only through 1960 (at most)!

Also, what about Marvelettes' "Forever" B to "Locking Up My Heart"

What about those 3 great Carolyn Crawford Motown B sides?

What about all those great Carl Davis produced B sides on Okeh Atco (Mary Wells).

The Mary Wells 20th Century Fox B sides were all pretty good too.

What about all those Goffin-King written B sides on Dimension and Colpix (all gems)!!!

Most of the Curtis Mayfield written B sides on Johnny Pate and Carl Davis productions were fantastic.

What about the fantastic gem "I'll Be There" by The Uptones, B side to the smooth ballad "No More". It's one of my all-time favourite mid-tempo '60s R&B/soul transition cuts. It blows away Bobby Darin's, and the well-known Gerry and The Pacemakers' versions.

Oh, Robb with a "K", that's Gerry with a "G"! I guess it's short for Geraldine? And, of course, a capital "P" for the heart parts.

Are U picking tulips now? Or, listening to WANDA sing "Forever"? Or, THE SHANGRI-LAS' "Out In The Streets"? I know you're =not= at JFK.

I'm listening to "The 81" by C.T.K. and working out new dance routines. MARY W. is meeting Boy at "The Train From Kansas City".

Thanks for the tip on Gerry. I fixed the post. Great Forum, David and Lowell!! I can fix my typos, and memory errors.

Stonewall: I'm sweating in the 80 degree heat of L.A., listening to some small-label Chicago soul from the '60s. Unfortunately, there are no NHL playoff games to watch tonight!!! I'll actually be back at JFK for about an hour in a few weeks, on my way to Schipol.

I think that Baby, Baby, Baby by Aretha is one of the greatest B Sides ever.

I don't think it's a "B" Side as such but Jr. Walker's "Hip City (Part 2)" is one of my favorites.

Hi again, soulful brothers & sisters!

If is admited "Parts 2", I add:

-"You Don't Have To Go / Part 2" (instrumental, B side of Part 1 vocal by Chi-lites). (The violin solo is fantastic!)
-"Party Down / Part 2" (B side, Little Beaver. The scat and guitar are very westmongomerian-georgebensiona n!)

Peace & Soul Food

B Sides and unreleased cuts

Save me/Miracles
I Couldn't Cry If I wanted Too/Temptations
Swept For You Baby/Miracles
Sad Souvenirs/Four Tops
Who You Gonna Run To/Tempts

Wait a minute I cant continue like this....Just put me down as loving dam near any B side of any Motown act from 1963 through 73......what this company did was remarkable.....I remember going to the local record shop and putting down 69 cent for my Motown 45's. I would spend more money on the Miracles/Tempts/Tops/Supremes/ Vandellas/Jr. Walker than I had a right too, because you just knew that the B side was the real reason that you bought the hit. Motown always gave you two-fer one. Oh yeah lets not forget the fabulous Fantastic 4 and later the Kings of Drama the Dramatics.......just keeping it real with that Detroit thing man.....nothing ever came close for this brother. Did I mention Enchantment ? Hell my next post I got to get on a Love Train and go to Philly......Ojay's, Blue Notes, Stylistics, Blue Magic.....and the beat goes on....Life has always been better because of the Music.
