This topic is very subjective, as it is debatable what the "Girls Group" Genre includes. I leave Motown girls groups out, as they have a much different sound from that of the "Philles/Dimension/Red Bird/David Gates - style" of girls group recordings, written mainly by Brill Building teams. I would only include The Marvelettes recording as The Darnells, and the only other Detroit girls group song in that genre would be "A Little Too Long" by The Debonaires. But neither would make my top 20, anyway. My rule is, if they're too soulful, they're Motown, Detroit, Chicago, N.Y., Philly or L.A. mid-tempo or fast soul, and NOT "The Girls Group Genre" (as defined by Alan Betrock). In truth, if I were to include ALL girls group songs, my ENTIRE top 20 would be 1962-66 Motown recordings. So, - like the '60s radio stations, "for the good of this thread", I will leave Motown, and very soulful girls recordings NOT ELIGIBLE. Darlene Love and a few of the leads and groups on my list were very soulful, but the instrumentals on their records were The Philles/Dimension "Wall of Sound" style-so are included in the basis of the genre.

Here is my list:

1)Big Bad World-Cathy Saint (w/group)
2)I Never Dreamed-Cookies
3)One Wonderful Night-Honey Bees(Cookies)
4)Baby, Baby, I Still Love You-Cinderellas
5)Let Me Get Close To You-Beverly Warren (w/unnamed group-Cookies?)
6)Just For Tonight-Chiffons
7)My Heart's Not In It-Darlene McCrea (w/unnamed group-(Cookies))
8)(He's A)Quiet Guy-Darlene Love (w/unnamed group (Blossoms?)
9)Sugar Boy-Charmettes
10)That Boy Is Messin' Up My Mind-Orchids
11)Evil One-Sapphires
12)Hey Everybody-Ramona King (w/unnamed group)
13)My One And Only Jimmy Boy-Girlfriends
14)A Little Love (Goes A Long Way)-Alder Ray (Mathis)(w/unnamed group-(Blossoms?))
15)She Don't Deserve You-Honey Bees (Cookies)
16)When The Boy's Happy (The Girl's Happy Too)-Four Pennies (Chiffons)
17)Lookie Lookie-Kittens
18)'Cause I Love Him-Alder Ray (Mathis)(w/unnamed group-(Blossoms?))
19)He Really Loves Me-Debbie Rollins (w/unnamed group)
20)I'm Into Something Good-Earl Jean (w/unnamed group-Cookies)

Honourable Mention:

1)Tonight I Met An Angel-Parlettes
2)Usher Boy-Merry Clayton (w/unnamed group)
3)Little Things Like That-Suzi Wallis (w/unnamed group)
4)One Fine Day-Chiffons
5)(I'm Gonna)Wait 'Till My Bobby Gets Home-Bob B. Soxx & Blue Jeans (Darlene Love)
6)Stay Awhile-Dusty Springfield (w/unnamed group)
7)Why Don't That Boy Leave Me Alone-Diane Christian & Crystalets
8)Keep Your Hands Off My Baby-Little Eva-(w/unnamed group-Cookies)
9)Christmas, Baby Please Come Home-Darlene Love
10)The Real Thing-Chiffons (I like Betty Everett's better-but it's not "Girls Group)
11)Goodnight Baby-Butterflys
12)Who Do You Love-Sapphires
13)You're My Lovin' Baby-Sweet Things
14)That's What They Put Erasers On Pencils For-Gems
15)Comin' Down With Love-Delicates
16)You're Losing Your Touch-Socialites
17)Say Hey There-Jovialettes
18)Huckleberry Finn-Buttons (Alder Ray Mathis)
19)Goodbye Baby-Maureen Gray (w/unnamed group)
20)If You Were A Man-Clydie King (w/unnamed group)

2nd Honourable Mention list (still 100% perfect quality)If single artist listed, unnamed backup girls group implied:

1)I Wonder-Crystals
2)That's The Way Boys Are-Leslie Gore
3)Look Of Love-Leslie Gore
4)Maybe I Know-Leslie Gore
5)Do I Love You-Ronnettes
6)The Kind Of Boy You Can't Forget-Raindrops
7)Make The Night A Little Longer-Palisades
8)What I Gotta Do To Make You Jealous-Little Eva
9)I Wanna Love Him So Bad-Jelly Beans
10)Because We're Very Young-Parlettes
11)Be My Baby-Ronettes
12)Go On And Have Yourself A Ball-Mar-Vells
13)What Makes Little Girls Cry-Victorians
14)Just A little Girl-Little Eva (w/Cookies)
15)I Wanna Make You Happy-Margaret Mandolph
16)Missin' My Baby-Clydie King
17)Strange Love-Darlene Love
18)Run, Steven, Run-Dreamettes
19)Baby, Let Me Be Your Girl-Julie Monday (local Detroit)
20)It Happened One Night-Diane Christian (& Crystalets)

This is ridiculous. I still haven't listed ONE Shirelles, missing lots of Crystals, Ronettes, Bob B. Soxx & Blue Jeans, Darlene Love, Blossoms, Poppies, Chiffons, etc., etc.

Sorry-I have to do 4 lists, as I do injustice to 20 more fabulous recordings:

1)Stumble And Fall-Darlene Love
2)Dream, Dream, Dream-Chiffons
3)What A Sweet Thing That Was-Shirelles
4)He's The Boy-Lollipops
5)Sad, Sad Girl-Bobbi-Pins
6)Please Don't Wake Me-Cinderellas
7)I Love The Boy Next Door-Lockettes
8)Hands Off, He's Mine-Shirelles
9)Breakin' Up-Ronettes
10)I Wonder-Butterflys
11)I'm Gonna Dry My Eyes-Chiffons
12)Do Wah Diddy-Exciters
13)There Ain't nothin' I Wouldn't Do For You-Dee Dee Sharp
14)Lover Boy-Blossoms (should be higher on list-but really too soulful for genre)
15)All Grown Up-Crystals
16)Oriental Garden-Ramona King
17)Too Hurt To Cry-Darnells(Marvelettes)
18)The Thrill Is Gone-Clydie King
19)I Want You To Be My Boyfriend-Chic-Lets
20)If He Kissed Me-Goodnight Kisses

I could fill ANOTHER 20 with Chiffons, Shirelles, Ronettes, Crystals classics as well as some other lesser-known groups' super recordings, and still have more-but you get the idea. These 80 are my favourites.

Stonewall, I "overlooked", or just didn't get to many, many, great girls group songs. I could still list another 60 that are of top quality. I prefer "Paradise" by the Ronettes. I didn't even list "Be My Baby" or many others of their great songs.

All aboard! I'm pleasantly surprised, BOY, that someone would mention THE SHANG's "Train From Kansas City", replete with MARY's inimitable blue-eyed soul and strong voice and the very effective sound effects of the train. As U know, it should have been an "A" side single.

P.S. Who does that "My One And Only Jimmy Boy" that U mention above? L-U-V (got that spelling from The Shangri-Las' "Give Him A Great Big Kiss") the song "MOAOJB" but can't place the familiar artist. I know it's not Motown but A-1.

Jimmy Mack: I LOVE top 20 lists!

Robb K: You did get my address, right? You have similar tastes to mine, judging by your girl group list. I haven't heard some of the tunes on your list(s), but I bet I'd love 'em too!

I will follow suit and leave the Motown and deeper soul things out if for no other reason than to limit it to 20:

1. Pixies - Just A Little Tear
2. Shirelles - It's Love That Really Counts
3. Shirelles - Shades Of Blue
4. Roddie Joy - Come Back Baby
5. Ronettes - Paradise
6. Chiffons - He's So Fine
7. Shirelles - My Heart Belongs To You
8. Hearts - Lonely Nights
9. Orchids - That Boy Is Messing Up My Mind
10. Jewels - Opportunity
11. Little Eva - What I Gotta Do
12. V.I.P.'s - Flashback
13. Patty & Emblems - Mixed-Up Shook-Up Girl
14. Patty & Emblems - You Can't Get Away
15. Starlets (Angels) - P.S. I Love You
16. Janettes - He's Crying Inside
17. Tonettes - Oh What A Baby
18. Crystals - Uptown
19. Shirelles - Will You Love Me Tomorrow
20. Charmers - It's A Funny Way We Met

My One and Only Jimmy Boy is by The Girlfriends. One of the members was in another girl group, but can't remember which one. I'll try and look it up. Great song....like Phil Spector on speed!

Update: Carolyn Willis is the member who was in the Girlfriends and was later in The Honeycone.

Theres' too many for me to mention. My faves would be the Crystals and the Ronettes who were the only real competition the Motown female groups had. Both the Crystals & Ronettes were GREAT Live, in person acts. Some solid records were made by RED Bird(Shang-ri-las, Jelly Beans, Butterflys & Dixie-Cups).Stonewall, glad you mentioned "Train From Kansas City" as I thought that was a good record...my fave by the Shangri-las would be "Out In The Streets" as I always tried to be the tuff boy."Jimmy Boy" by the Girlfiends and Baby, I Still Love You by the Cinderellas was cool for Spector copy cats. The Shirelles, ofcourse would be theclassic GIRL GROUP & dominated the genre from 1960-1962.

GIRL GROUPS/Girl Groups/girl groups.... we can never get enough of!

Robb the K (any relation to Murray the K?), it is so interesting that U chose "I Wonder" by 2 different artists. And the version I luv, luv, luv is by a 3rd!!! RONNIE SPECTOR & THE RONETTES. Because it was released elsewhere is why that naughty boy "P.S." wouldn't release it by the "Be My Baby Girls".

Toni R., yesss, we also have similiar musical tastes. I'm dedicated to "Out In The Streets (He Don't Hang Out With The Gang No More)" by MARY WEISS & THE TOUGH GIRLS. In fact, I was the one who chose it for the movie "Stonewall" (1996). My name is in the film's "Special Credits", as I was also a 'historical' (factual) consultant in addition to the music. I also chose The Shangri-Las' "Remember, Walkin' In The Sand", the fast-moving, foot-stomping, hand-clapping "Give Him A Great Big Kiss", the campy "Sophisticed Boom Boom" (a "B" side") and arguably the most unique record in pop music history: "Past, Present and Future". In the movie "Stonewall", that song was split into its 3 natural parts and thus became the theme song of the movie. Miss WEISS was delighted with this honor and personally very thankful to me.

And, Lenny, U make this girl groups knowledgeable L-U-V fest a quartet! I'm sure more will join us.

P.S. I don't think anyone mentioned THE PIXIES THREE with "Birthday Party". They are still performing.

P.S. "Today I Met The Boy I'm Gonna Marry" is just by DARLENE LOVE and that's how it's billed on the record and the album, etc. and now the Love c.d. It's not by "BBS&TBJ". I have the original single; in fact, all of Darlene's! Otherwise, it would be interesting to have that song sung as U stated, Robb, by a male, BOB B. SOXX. The latter -- with Darlene in his group -- had "Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah", "Not Too Young To Get Married" and "Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Hearts?" -- besides their "P.S." Xmas songs like "Here Comes Santa Claus" and the spiritually inspiring "The Bells Of St. Mary's".

Great lists, folks!!! Keep 'em comin'! I'll find out about "new" old music to listen to. They're not making any new 1936-1967 music anymore, - so I'm very glad for all the previously unreleased cuts coming out on CD, as well as hearing songs that WERE released in the old days, but I somehow missed.

Lenny: NO! I NEVER got your address! That's why I haven't sent the tape I made for you for the three weeks I've had it ready to send. I'll send you another e-mail, so you can just send a reply with your post address. Then, I'll send the tape. Your list had a lot of great stuff on it. I can tell that our tastes are similar in a lot of areas. I'm sure we can turn each other on to a few previously unknown sounds.

Stonewall mentioned The Pixies Three. They have a great web page. They also have a couple of new CD's out, sounding as great as ever. I particularly like "442 Glenwood Ave" and "Birthday Pary". I think they recorded for the same guys who did The Secrets, one of my favorites which I was neglegent to mention in my list...."The Boy Next Door" is my favorite....as you probably guessed!

Stonewall: I doubt that Murray The K is a relative of mine. What's his last name? Mine's Klein (as in Calvin Klein-or Carole Klein (Carole King's real name)). Actually, I share a whole name with Robert Klein the NY actor and comedian (but also with our recent new poster "Robbert").

I listed "I Wonder" by both Crystals and Butterflys because they're almost different enough to be two different songs. The Crystals' is one of the (if not THE) prime example(s) of Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound", but their vocal is only ordinary. While The Butterflys' vocal is extremely soulful and yet, the backing track is a very good Girls Group style. If I were limited to the top 20 suggested in the thread, neither would make it. If I were banished to an island and could take only one, it would be The Butterflys'.

Good vocals are usually more important to me than great tracks.- To wit: "California Soul" by The Messengers. One of the greatest motown tracks, and a TERRIBLE vocal. I kick myself three times every time I remember that Marvin and Tammi's version has a much weaker backing track. Why in the World didn't they use the Messengers' track with their stars???? Speaking of super tracks,....Does anyone know if there were any recordings in the can, of "Just Like Romeo and Juliette" by any other Wingate artists? Don't get me wrong, - The Reflections did a great job on it. But can you imagine what it would have sounded like sung by The Holidays, Freddie Gorman, Ronnie Savoy or The Dramatics. The song requires a voice with quite a bit of range.

Stonewall: Sorry! I overlooked your point that the Ronettes' "I Wonder" was your personal favourite, and I mentioned 2 other versions, and not it. I like The Crystals' backing track a bit better than The Ronettes, and like The Butterflys' vocal much better. I like The Ronettes' vocal better than The Crystals, but not enough to raise its overall "package". A recording is a composite of all its components: vocal lead, vocal backgrounds, instrumental performance, sound recording quality, mixing, the blending of all those elements into a single sound impression. The Ronettes' version a lot. To me, there's not a lot to choose between the 3. They are all good. I like the instrumental in the Ronettes very much, as well. It's just different from the Crystals'. Again, it's a matter of taste. If we all had exactly the same taste, the World would be extremely dull. It's clear that I don't understand why I like many records. there are too many underlying factors. Sometimes technical ability in the singer using his or her voice or the instrument players' skill is an important factor, -other times something else that catches my ear overshadows it. It's the same with attraction to a person. Sometimes you're attracted to someone who's bad for you, and you know it, but you just can't help yourself. You like what you like, and sometimes you can't analyse or break it down enough to account for it. As The Wrens (and Five Keys) once said: C'est La Vie".

Sorry about that "senior moment" regarding the Darlene Love vs. Bobb B. Soxx & Blue Jeans error. I know better than that. I bought ALL the Philles records new (and the Philles unreleased Boots, too). From what I remember, Bobby Sheen's contributions to those songs was about as much as Ike Turner on "Ike & Tina Turner' recordings. To me, Darlene Love's and Bobb B. Soxx & Blue Jeans hit records all just sound like Darlene Love backed by 2 or 3 other girls. (That statement, of course, doesn't refer to Bobby Sheen's cuts as lead).

The "K" for Murray is "Kaufman", which is why he made it "K". Of course, I was only kidding U anyway, Robb the K. Your postings are very informative and entertaining. We have that in common, too. With "I Wonder", I was just letting U know of the three, my favorite is by THE RONETTES. Actually, I enjoy all 3 versions. Now, with BOBALA SHEEN, ironically, it was another Jewish music guy -- as in P.S. -- who actually only showcased Bobby's voice on the two Christmas songs! -- which are very good. I'm always amused when someone Jewish brings out the best in Christmas. It happens all the time. I know U understand Mr. Robb "Calvin" Klein. Look, BARBRA's been doin' it for 40 years -- especially her Xmas album and "Silent Night" in summer! Oh, do U still have your Philles records? I do!

Stonewall: Yes, I still have all the Philles records. I still have 99% of all the records I ever bought. Other than replacing a few hundred (about 80%)of my Canadian pressings with originals from USA (which I strongly regret now-What on Earth was I thinking of?), I've traded only a few records away (that weren't duplicates). I recently swapped away a nice soul record to get Major Lance's 1959 Mercury record (backed by The Impressions). I'd been looking for it for 44 years. Since 1980, I've added about 10 records to my collection. But now, at least, I'm adding all those vinyl-unreleased and dead rare '60s releases on CD, after finally getting a CD player in late 2003. I still use a phonograph and play vinyl records and make cassette tapes. I'll have to get a CD burner some day-unless they change technologies before I get around to it. I knew you were only kidding about Good Ol' Murray. I come off to many people as having no sense of humour. I guess that's why I'm doing so poorly as a comedy writer! (Sigh....)

"Stonewall" is derived from The Stonewall Club in Greenwich Village. Most of the patrons were underaged teenagers. Hello! There was a great jukebox with mucho Motown songs. In a great fiasco move, the New York City Police Department raided it for the upteenth time only, this time, on June 27, 1969 -- the exact day in the same city of Saint JUDY GARLAND's Funeral -- the NYCPD stupidly took "prisoners" and a rebellion erupted -- for five nights. For me, it was annoying to be dancing to "No Matter What Sign U Are" in The Stonewall and then have the plug pulled on the jukebox in the middle of the song. To this day, it's still like an unfinished dance. By the way, he was Jewish! It got worse. I, along with a dozen others, were subsequently 'paraded' out, taken to the police precinct, processed, etc. and had to appear in Court -- many times after, too. U can imagine what I said to them. My quips includede lines out of Motown songs, in particular. The mugshot of me is so stunning that I had it enlarged and posted it on our S.V.A. website in the "Photo Album". It's just that those old black 'n' white mugshots made my hair look black (it was auburn that month) and it made my blue eyes look black. U can imagine what I said to them. Some of my quips were actually lines out of songs. Oh, the cops learned their lesson after the "Stonewall Rebellion". They've been on their best behavior ever since. Today, the rebellion is hugely celebrated worldwide with big and colorful Gay Pride Parades, which have featured, among other things, drag queens on roller skates, prominent Soul singers and classic cars made in Detroit. The last weekend in June this year is the 35th Anniversary. There are so many Canadians at the N.Y.C. Gay Pride Parade, that Canadian coins are accepted for the day -- and the lingering week. U mean U didn't visit the website connection that I sometimes provide the link to? Oh, you're kidding. By the way, I knew U were humorous, trust me.

For your other question, as U can now guess, I live in Manhattan, New York. Thanx for asking.

Great story! But,it was difficult for me to figure out who the "he was Jewish" was. Was it Saint Judy Garland (who then must have been a drag queen-thus, the gay pride parades). Otherwise there is no reference to any person that could be HE (unless you meant the organiser of the raids i.e. the Chief of Police???

And what's with Canadians these days? No Patriotism? The place has really gone downhill since I left! Can't we even hold OUR OWN gay pride parades? What's wrong with Montreal, Toronto or Moose Factory (Ont.)? Or what about a parade for a whole week, spanning the length of Prince Edward Island?

Regarding Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, Bobby Sheen does sing lead on "Zip a Dee Doo Dah" and in unison with Darlene on the 2 other 45 releases as well as lead on the Christmas LP as you mentioned.Do you remember seeing Darlene sing "Quiet Guy" on Shindig?Bad move by Phil withdrawing that. I love all 3 versions of "I Wonder"..I love Lala Brooks soulful intro on the Crystals version. Did you know that Mary Thomas of the Crystals was a Butterfly?

Robb the K (Kibutzer). Yes, there was reference to =one= person who could have been the "he". Mysteree HE solved: the one I was dancing with! Oy! Alllrite! Yes, CANADA should have their own Gay Pride Parades. Detroit does. Even Japan does! It's the biggest thing to hit there since the "A" bomb. After all, the Gay parades started well back into the last century (1970) to commemorate the first anniversary of the rebellion. It's incredible the big "C" doesn't have 'em as Canada is known for mostly being so liberal and open-minded and welcoming. American draft-dodgers were endeared. Where else -- besides the former Iraq -- would a country roll out the red carpet for terrorists and not for an entertaining and money-generating Gay Pride Parade? Don't anybody answer that (I know there are a 'few' places). And, especially since these Gay Pride Parades have so, so much M-U-S-I-C. They have state-of-the-art sound systems with powerful generators. It's all really very exciting for the throngs (and sometimes thongs) of spectators lining the route.

Sometimes one parade float is dedicated to a particular musical artist and maybe even with a look-a-like impersonator (BARBRA, DIANA ROSS, THE SUPREMES, CHER, SISTER SLEDGE, MADONNA and THE VILLAGE PEOPLE come to visible recollection) and sometimes even the real thing appears (WHITNEY HOUSTON (oh, yes, she did), GEORGE MICHAEL, CYNDI LAUPER, BOY GEORGE, JENNIFER HOLIDAY, et al.). Bi the way, I'm just speaking about Manhattan, New York City! I have invited a classic Motown star for this "last weekend in June 2004" to lead the parade with me and the Stonewall Veterans but I can't say nada yet, if and until it is confirmed.
"Bless U" for asking for more 411, Mister K.

So, Robb left Canada. To where? Manhattan?

Stonewall I can't believe you left off Right Now And Not Later by the Shangri-las.
This is a great Motown song,it was written and produced by Robert Bateman and performed by the Funk Brothers- just listen to the great bass.

TD, are you sure that is the Funk Bros. on the Shangri-Las record?I'm pretty sure it was recorded in NY and produced by Robert Bateman but with NY session guys. Oh yea, Carolyn Willis was a Blue Jeans for awhile and also is in the pix on the famous Christmas LP(she was in the Girlfriends and after the stint in the Blue Jeans she later became part of Honey Cone.

Great, great lists of one of my favourite record genres. Here goes - and I know I'm going to miss off a slew of 45s that I love with all my heart!

1. Will You Love Me Tomorrow - Shirelles
2. Then He Kissed Me - Crystals
3. Da Doo Ron Ron - Crystals
4. Walking In The Rain - Ronettes
5. Heat Wave - Martha & the Vandellas
6. Don't Ever Leave Me - Connie Francis
7. Love Me Like You're Gonna Lose Me - Chiffons
8. Condition Red - Goodees
9. Nobody's Baby Now - Reparata & the Delrons
10.I Never Dreamed - Cookies

Like everybody else, I've missed off hundreds of records by more obscure artistes like the Cinderellas, Baby Jane & the Rockabyes, Henrietta & the Hairdooz, Candy & the Kisses and better known ones like the Orlons, the Angels and the rest of great artistes on the Philles, Cameo, Dimension and Red Bird labels.

What an impossible task!
David.

Yes, Tony-Phil Spector made a mistake by withdrawing "He's A Quiet Guy". I think it is, by far and away, the best recording Philles made. But there was a reason for that. I was told by several people in "The Business" that Phil did that for spite, and as a punishment for Darlene's continued and excelerating moonlighting with The Blossoms for other labels after he had told her not to. I guess he had an exclusive contract with her at the time. Note that that release was her last on Philles. That explanation was the rumour going round in the late '60s and early '70s. I can't vouch for its veracity, (as usual).

I have to concur with Toni Russi, about Bateman using The Funk Bros. on The Shangri-Las. Everything I've heard, read, learned from Graham (Acoolcat) who's researched Detroit's recording history thoroughly, and Ron M. and other knowledgeable posters on SD, points to Bateman recording in NY starting in 1964; and, generally using NY musicians on those sessions. He used Richard Tee quite a bit, with a sound that mimics the Funks to such an extent that many knowledgeable people thought several of those recordings were recorded in Detroit.

Can't argue with your great list, Motown David!

Stonewall: Where I went after leaving Canada is kind of complicated. I think you'll be sorry you asked that question. I moved from Winnipeg to Chicago in 1959. To L.A. California in 1966 for University. Vancouver B.C. 1970 for graduate school. Back to L.A. 1971-72 for more graduate school. During most of those years (1946-73) I spent summers in Den Haag, Netherlands. Then in 1973, I moved to Den Haag(where my family had come from)until the present (but also lived part year in various places in Jordan, Sudan,Ethiopia, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Sierra Leone, India and Malaysia working for U.N. projects through 1987. I also spent part year in L.A. in 1973-1983 (working with Motown's "From The Vaults" project in late 1970s, and Airwave 1979-83. In 1984 I started part-time cartooning for Dutch Disney Comics, and changed to it full-time in 1988. I returned to USA for 3-6 months per year to work at animation studios and attend The American Animation Institute in 1996(Cartoonist Union's professional school). Throughout the years since 1960, I've also spent about 1 month in Winnipeg and from 1989-1995 2-4 months in Copenhagen, Denmark, working for Danish Disney Comics, as well as 2-4 months in Munich, Germany working with partners in an animation/comic art studio. Currently, I still spend 5-6 months in L.A., 2-3 weeks in Winnipeg, and about 6 months bouncing between The Netherlands and Germany. I leave for The Netherlands in a few weeks. Starting next year, I hope to cut my L.A. time down to 1-2 months. Sorry for the windiness, but you asked. As far as New York, -I've been in JFK Airport over 60 times, but spent only 1 and a half days in NYC in my life. I've spent more time held by The Israeli Army as a PLO spy than I have in Manhattan.

Topic: Non-Motown Girl Groups & Those That Luv Them

Robb the K:
"Around The World With The Supremes" is the album (unreleased) that came to mind after reading your incredible living itinerary. Ironically, on the album, THE SUPES sing "Havah Nagilah". Meanwhile, I then got up and walked in to a wall! Don't worry, it was a wall of sound. I wanted to hear "Quiet Guy" by the love-lee DARLENE. The bottom line: RK, where is your main home now? L.A.? U have to keep your "records" somewhere. And U sound so New York City-oriented, I think U better prepare to relocate again. I mean, I'm a Brooklyn-born/Long Island-raised/Manhattan resident but I have seen Miss LOVE -- who now lives here -- perform in San Jose at the Circle Star Theatre (1974). That's when DL still lived in Inglewood, L.A. I am one of the ones to convince her to move to New York and she's been going uphill ever since, including four films!!!! Hi, TRISH.

Oh, those boys in the Israeli army probably just wanted your phone number, RK. Many of them are very sexy and, oh, love music! Remember, Gays are welcomed in the Israeli army and "they can ask" and "they can tell"! Oooooo, fellas, sounds like a RONETTES and/or CRYSTALS and/or BUTTERFLYS record. Guess what, fellas, it is! And the same song by all 3 of those girl groups!!! Are U salivating yet??? Here it is... "Girls Can Tell". Luv it!

By the way, RK, our Mayor RUDY rightfully threw the PLO Leader at the time the hell out of NYC's Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center several years ago. Boy, was that front-page international news.
Native New Yorkers and others loved. The PLO contingency at the U.N. complained. Ha-ha -- a lot of good that did. And several years before that, Mayor ED KOCH threw the PLO leader out of somewhere else in NYC. The "Big Apple" is great. And.. we definitely want U!

------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --

TD & THE SHANGS:
How? E-Z! I limited myself to ten (10) songs of THE SHANGRI-LAS. Otherwise, I would have surely included: "Wishing Well", "So In Love", "Long Live Our Love", "The Train From Kansas City", "Dressed In Black" and, posilutely, "Right Now And Not Later". That song was always known by "The In-Crowd" as "The Shangri-Las go Motown". They did the M-sound very convincingly on that song. The musicians sure captured th Motown sound. MARY WEISS has more of a soulful voice than some "soul" singers. It was no secret that Mr. GORDY wanted them and knew that he couldn't have them. "The Shadow knows!" Otherwise, it would have been a great move, their hits would have continued for years and they'd still be performing today. (I trust U all know that, sadly, both of The GANSER twins have died.)

------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --

And, TONI the R -- Wait! Wait a minute! I feel like DOROTHY in "The Wizard of Oz"... And U, Tinman..., And U, Scarecrow..., And U, Lion....
We know that the fabulous BOB B. SOXX actually sang sorta lead heading up his own group (unlike HAROLD MELVIN). Surely, he is heard well in "Zip-A-Dee..." literally playing the role of Little Black Sambo! But on the BBS&TBJ songs, he was clearly overshadowed by BLUE JEAN DARLENE (notice how it rhymes). Not having heard it in awhile, when I think of "Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Hearts", I only "hear" Darlene. Same with "Not Too Young To Get Married". And we all agree that "He's A Quiet Guy" is sublime. Technically, wasn't that considered the "B" side of "Stumble And Fall"? Some cities and some radio stations played one side, others played the other. I know from a friend of mine and PATTI LaBELLE's that "Quiet Guy" was very big in Philadelphia, for example. Miss LOVE and I have discussed that song in person many times. She finally included it, ceding to my demand, in her act several years ago at the legendary "Bottom Line Nightclub". Darlene absolutely loves that song and is well aware of its "underground" popularity. Glad it was put on the c.d. collections. So, "P.S." cheated himself -- besides Darlene and Philles Records -- out of a hit record and $$$. Of course, he has bigger things to consume himself with now. Darlene, too, like RONNIE, feels vindicated.

Stonewall: Yes, "He's A Quiet Guy" was supposed to be the B side.
I'll never move to NY. It's too crazy and crowded. I hate L.A., but I'm guessing it would be a paradise for me compared to NY. No offence, NY people-it's only that it's not for me. I don't like living in USA anyway, but If I DID stay there, it would be best for me in rural Washington State or Oregon, Northern Minnesota, or The UP of Michigan. I enjoyed living in Chicago (but that was in the old days). I wouldn't live in Amsterdam. It's too crowded and crazy for me. Den Haag is a "sleepy" government town. It's sort of like the "Milwaukee" or "Winnipeg" of The Netherlands. It's a middle sized big city with a small town feel. But I live on the outskirts, anyway, away from the noise, traffic and hordes of people.

I wasn't interested in the Israeli soldiers, as I'm not Gay. As a liberal Canadian, I used the parade reference to make a joke about those hosers up north of your border. Ahh, now I see your clever wordplay "HELD by The Israeli soldiers". Touche'.

I always thought that strange that "Stumble & Fall" would be the A side as Darlene did "Quiet Guy"on Shindig, radio here played it a few times before they got the word that it was withrawn from the market...record shops here never got it.
