Hey SDF - Needless to say, and unless you have been hibernating, this Sunday is May 9th, Mothers Day. This thread will take 3 directions: 1. What are you folk planning to do in acknowledgement of your Mother? - (living or deceased applies to this) 2. Other than the title of this thread, what other 'Mother' songs are out there?... 3. ...and dont forget to acknowledge Big Momma 'Grandmother', surrogate mother 'Aunt', and StepMother. They are Momma too. I have to say I am BEYOND BLESSED to still have my mother...SHe is a wonderful smart and very insightful human being to say the least about her, and Im glad she is MY MOTHER. But, I share her with my siblings, and there are many of us around...and we share her with other people who need a Mother figure in their lives at one point or another. I cannot begin to tell you all the wonderful things my Mother has done for me and others...unconditionally and unselfishly...and she does it all with a smile on her face. Ask anyone who knows her. And to boot...she has ONE HELL OF A SENSE OF HUMOR and is a GREAT DANCER. I only hope to be just like her when I grow up. She is my female hero, and I love her MADLY. Take it from me, Do everything you can with her, for her and in honor of her. The long term memories behind it are well worth the payoff. God Bless and have a GREAT ONE with your Mother, in person or in spirit. DyvaNaye |

My mom, at 81, is incredible! Always on the go! I plan to spend a long weekend in Pittsburgh with my parents & do anything she asks of me. You're right, dyva, doing the little things will result in the best memories! Life is too short! |

My Mom is 80 years old (thank you Lord!) and she is still with me. Each day I thank the Lord when she picks up the other end of the telephone. She is also very active in spite of knee problems. She drives, travels, shops and I call her "go-go". She keeps going. On Mother's Day I will call Mom, wish her a Happy Mother's Day. I sent her gift so we can talk about that. I don't know what my kids have in mind but whatever it is, I'm just happy being with them. I want to wish all the SD's Moms a Happy Mother's Day and a special prayer to the Mothers we remember in spirit. Love, Arcadia |

Wow! These 80 + year-old Mothers. It's great to read and very heartening. What ages! "80... 81... do I hear 82...?" Yeah, mine is 82! How ironic. My Mother just got a c.d. played so I'm buying and sending her several compact discs for Mother's Day -- absolutely including THE INTRUDERS' "Greatest Hits" with their truly long and great "I'll Always Love My Mama". |

Dyva, this is a good thread to honor & revere some of the greatest & most over-looked heroes in the world, our mothers. If I were to really get into it, this would last for pages & everyone here knows how I hate to write long posts I'm going to think about it & try to write it in a SHORT & concise manner. For now, I'll just say the following: Everything that I am as a human being, is due to my mother. For all this is good about me is only through her love & the things that she instilled in me. If I can be just one tenth of the man that she's always been, then I'll be a success! Juice |

Hello again, soulful friends! Hey DyvaNaye, good thread about a double interesting subject (our mothers and soul music, two sentimental questions). My mother is aged 73 years-old and despite the fact have some health problems as artritis from she was younger, she is very active. Today she with my father and my younger brother lives at the country where is impossible to stopping work (the garden, the tomatos, the trees,...). He loves flamenco and allways is singing Juanito Valderrama songs. She is from Murcia (the same town of singer guitarist Charo). She was so beatiful when was young that i got some Edipo complex in my childhood! Some Mother's songs i likes: -Firsty, of course, as i'm a Philly obssesed, "I'll Allways Love My Mama" by The Intruders -"Mother's Son" by Curtis Mayfield -"Mama Don't Papa Won't" Loleatta Holloway -"Mama Never Told Me" Sister Sledge -"Sexy Mama" Moments -"Mama Soul" Soul Survivors -"Grandma's Hands" Livingston Taylor / Al Jarreau -"Mother Nature" Temptations -"Original Midnight Mama" Sylvia Smith Peace & Soul Food |

You make it sound so comfortable and warm...(smile) also, GOD BLESS to your MOM and your father. You also amaze me because you have such a good knowledge of American Music, and you list RARE SOUL, something I love. GOOD CHOICES! Thanks for responding Manny, and Happy 'Dia De Madre' to you. LOL. Ralph, that is too much! Who's Mother is 83? C'mon. Also, it's ironic, too, that my Mother belongs to a square dancing group -- great exercise, too -- and dances 2 or 3 times per week. And same goes with the colorful costumes. I believe the name of the group she belongs to is the "Times Squares". It's also quite a social outing for them. And, Dyva, I remember well and always liked THE TEMPTS' "Ma", too -- plus JERMAINE's!

Sadly, my mom entered the gates of Heaven on November 27th, 1984. To me, she was the greatest mom in the world. She was compassionate, extremely understaning regarding my mission in life, very intuitive to the point of being psychic, and one heluva of a cook. I was spoiled rotten, having been an "only child" because my older sister married when I was four aand she was 19!!, so therefore I was an "only, and spoiled child". My grandma was just like my mom and without their undying and unwaivering love, I wouldnt be the man I am today. Sadly, I lost my mother 20 years ago in a very sudden and tragic car accident. She was on her way to playing tennis on a bright sunny day, but was at the "wrong place at the wrong time"! She was youthful, healthy, & fit. She was a wonderful, kind, person, whom I still miss very much, especially at this time (and also around her birthday, and the date of her passing). Here are some more songs I especially like: Pilgrim Travelers - Mother Bowed Trumpeteers - Motherless Child Viloinaires - My Mother Used To Hold Me Gospelaires of Dayton, Ohio - Mother's Journey Flying Clouds of Detroit - My Mother Swallows - Mother Andre Williams - Mrs. Mother USA Nikki

This Mother's day I will celebrate with my sisters, daughter, niece and family friends, it will be an all girls holiday. We are going to see a play in Philly and dinner after the play. Sadly, my mother is up in heaven but she is always in my heart. The song that is so poignant and means so much to me, especially when it is sung by my brother Jimmy Scott is, "Motherless Child". |

Nobody's yet mentioned the ultimate and undisputed "Mother" song of all time, but, of course, I will. In fact, it is so powerful a song that one time ELVIS A. PRESLEY was in the front row of her concert just to see her sing this song, after he had lost his beloved mother. Elvis -- in plain sight -- started crying. This was not unusual. I've witnessed it myself. This song is worth buying the c.d. just to get this one song. The artist is CONNIE FRANCIS and the song is "Mama". On Mother's Day, look to hear it on the "golden oldies" radio stations. |

I'm very lucky to still have my mother. The older I get, the more in awe I am of her. She would be mother to the whole world if she could - nothing is too much trouble for her. She would give her last meal to a complete stranger without question. I visited her after I'd had a recent operation, and I fell asleep on her sofa. I felt her place a blanket over me. One small gesture with a whole lotta love behind it. My favourite "mother" song is "I'm living in shame" by The Supremes. One real special person, and I thank God for giving her to me. |

My mom's only 45, thank goodness. She's been through enough tramatic stuff in her own childhood than what people go through in a lifetime. She had spinal meningitis as a baby, survived a hurricane and a fire when she was a kid. Although my mother was constantly teased and jumped on throughout elementary, middle, and high school, she still stuck it out. She was the first person who taught me how to play football. I think I get a lot of genes from her. Even though she gets on my nerves from time to time, I still love her. I'm thinking about getting something for my mom on Mother's Day but I don't know what. My stepdad and I are planning to take her and my grandmother out for lunch. Then I'm thinking about spending some time with my dad and stepmom. My favorite song besides "I'll Always Love My Mama" by the Intruders is "Mama's Pearl" by the Jackson 5. Believe it or not, this will be the first Mother's Day without my dad's mother-in-law since she died last summer. It's time like those that I'm thankful for my mom and I miss my grandmother. |

Dinelle, you are so doggoned cute it's crazy(smile!) You say your moms is "only" 45, and that makes me feel so young, 'cause I'm 'bout dat myself!!!(smile1) How many 16-year olds think 45 is young in this world??? You are either very mature, an old soul in a very young body, or both(smile!) My moms would've been 91 this year... Yeah, she was 45 when I was born, and that's why I'm so retarded sometimes(smile!) Seriously, though, I truly miss her on Sundays, like this past Easter, when I saw all those old(and young)sisters with their fine Easter hats on... I saw one older, bow-legged Black Woman who reminded me so much of my moms, I felt myself breaking emotionally, and turned away from her... Wow, the death of one's parents, all of your stored memories, they just never leave you... She gave me lots of wise counsel when i was not wise enough to know it's wisdom, and I am eternally grateful... She smiled and smiled and smiled, finally showed me there's incalculable strength in the ability to smile... when she smiled at me following a massive heart attack on Memorial Day 2000, which eventually killed her, the clash of her southern gentleness and my hard knocks Brooklyn upbringing came full circle, and she won my soul... I realized for the first time in my life that her smile wasn't apologetic, but sincere and genuine, and all of the things I prize in myself... Yep, I have, and always will, Love My Mama - believe dat!(smile!) Peace! Isaiah |

Hey, Nosey, you know the feeling is mutual from me to you, to be sure, and ya know dat!(smile!) Moe, I been on the other side of the fence waiting to get in(smile!) I needed a leg up, and all my boys was over already(smile!) I, also, wanna mention my grandmother, Mrs. Ophelia Emmanuel, the strongest, roughest, toughest, most fearless human being of any gender I've ever known... A legend in her own time, who lived to the ripe age of 98, she once said to me, "I'll wear out, before I rust out..." Of course, we called her Mama Ophelia, and when my father passed in 1972, she came to attend the funeral, and wound up staying for a year at the behest of my mother... During the summer of that year, my mother asked me to accompany Mama Ophelia to the optometrist to fulfill a prescription for a pair of glasses... We took the bus to the doctor, but upon our return, Mama Ophelia got restless, and asked if we could just walk a piece... Well, no problem for me at 14 years old, but she was 84, and the heat jumping up outta that steel and concrete was hot enough to fry an egg on, so we took it slow... Mama Ophelia had on her skips, and I had on my pro-keds, and we'd walked about 11 or 12 NYC blocks when we came to a two-way street... I looked first for cars in the direction facing my Grandmother, and then in the other... When I looked back to tell her we could cross, all I could see was the bottom of her skippies, running across the blacktop(smile!) I was petrified, horrified, paralyzed with fear and disbelief!!! When I got across that street she wasn't even out of breath, and I was just amazed... Later that night, I told my mother what had happened, told her of my fear of Mama Ophelia, possibly, dying on my watch... But my mother laughed hard and hearty, and told me I was in the company of a very special person, and never to be surprised by what this woman could do... Oh, from that day on, I never was - believe it...(smile!) So, to my Grandmama and Mama, as well as my baby who is also a mama, a very happy Mother's Day to you all - and the entire SDF family of Mothers on Mother's Day! Hope I didn't ramble on that... Peace! Zeke |

Hey All, I wished to mention that since my Mother passed last September - I truly feel that she is most definately my Angel now. I wanted the house I will now close on soon - even before I even had mine listed. Well - I called the owner over three weeks ago and was told that she had a contract on it. I was heartbroken. I had viewed and fell in love with it over the Net. Anyway - I went home that day sad and what not - and I asked the Lord why - oh why was the house that I had my heart and mind set on - sold from under me. Selfishly - I prayed to Him that the contract the owner had on the house would fall thru. I also asked Him to forgive me for asking Him such a thing. Meanwhile - I started looking for something else - and considered renting even. But - because the interest rates are soooooo low, and the houses in AL (down South - period) are much cheaper than in this area) - I felt it was a good time to buy - if I could. Well Lord and my very own Angel behold - I was left a message 4-19-04 - stating that the contract had fallen thru. I called the realtor - and she said that we had to act fast. She asked if I had a fax machine so that she could fax me a contract. I said no - but that I could run up to the library to receive it. Needless to say - the rest is history. Now in my heart of hearts - I know my Mother asked God to let me have my heart's desire - which was this particular house - and especially since it was gonna be meant to be anyway. LOL! Bless her heart. No one can convince me that my Mother didn't add her two cents in this transaction. I love her so much and always will. She is and will forever more be - my Angel. God gets the Praise always. And - my mother will always get the credit she has always deserved, because it really was a MIRACLE that I got the house I craved. My father lives in Montgomery and will do the final walkthru in my stead for my new miracle home. Peace - Love and Blessings to all. "GOD BLESS WHO EVER SENT HER" (Which is God Himself) |

I started to bypass this thread for a number of reasons...then thought otherwise. Ya see...I turned 3 on 12/22 and my mother died on 1/3. I have NO memories of her at all. Not a kiss, not a touch, not a spoken word...NOTHING. I thought I at least knew what she looked like, since the same 8x10 photo was in so many relatives homes...but several years ago an aunt gave me some other photos of my mom....and they look nothing like that 8x10, so I'm even confused about her appearance. I just want to know...who was this woman that my father loved so much...that he NEVER slept in their bed again after her death and NEVER remarried ? Please don't understand...I was raised in a house full of love. I still had my father at that time, an aunt (his sister) that treated me as her own, and my grandmother...but no matter what, they weren't Mama. If you still have one...love her with everything you've got 'cause you only get one. Sunday I'll ride the freeways or find a quiet spot in a park & play a CD I made with "I'll Always Love My Mama", "Sadie", "Better Days", "Ghetto Child" (wasn't raised there...but some of the lyrics hit home), "Dance With My Father", "Saturday Evening" (Ronnie Laws) + a few other goodies & just try & handle what's inside me. "If there's no one to share your memories...did they ever really happen ??" |

1wicked (1wicked) Love can always be found inside oneself if we look in the right parts of our souls and hearts. An individual will discover that the love you find in your self was placed there by one who loved you. So to answer your question every time you pass on that love on to someone special in your life the love you are passing on came from some one who loved you. 1wicked, enjoy your Sunday and cherish the love you have to give to others. I can't think of a better way to honor ones mother than with an act of LOVE. Peace and treat everyone with the respect you would give your own mother. |

Hey, Isaiah. Long time no see. The reason why I said that I'm glad my mom's only 45 is because she looks younger than her age. That is until you ask her how old she is. Sorry to hear about your mom. She sounded like a real trooper like my mom is. If my mom died, I don't know how I'd live without her. Talk to ya later. Your little wildflower, Dinelle |

The S.D.F. "Mama Song" Award goes to: H-E-L-E-N-E! Helene, U are too much. I was reading your nice, touching, emotional, heart-warming story about your Mother and U and how after an operation U felt the blanket being gently put on U by your Mother who presumed that U were asleep and then... Wham! Bam! Thank U, Mam! Now I can tell my Mother that after 35 years, since that song came out in early 1969 and hit the "Top Ten" -- on local lists in N.Y.C., it was #1 w/ a bullet -- I finally found someone who stated ("admitted") that "I'm Livin' In Shame (Mama I Miss U)" is their favorite "Mother" song. When I told my Mother that it was MY favorite "Mother" song three-and-a-half decades ago, she was furious and insulted. She declared: "I don't even wear a scarf much less a dirty, raggedy one around my head! I don't need to hide MY hair". I said, Ma, there are some nice things about the mother in the song. She asked, "Oh, like wearing her stockings low, low to her feet". I sheepishly retorted: The song says the mother was a good cook. My Mother snapily counter-retorted: "No, it doesn't; it says that out of the pot she ate, never used a fork or a dinner plate. How dare U?" U know, much later, I quietly played "ILIS" to listen carefully to every word. My Mother was right; it was one "dish" (pun intended) after another. Here are three more: * "I was always afraid my uptown friends would see her, afraid one day that I would be her." * "She had a grandson two years old, I never even showed her." * "I must have been insane, I lied and said Mama died on a weekend trip to Spain". * "Married a guy, was living high; I didn't want him to know her. She had a grandson two years old, that I never even showed her! Oh, Helene, like I said, U are too much -- maybe a lot like me? It's also a great, fast-drivin', hell's-a-poppin' song to dance to. Thanx for vindicating me and "Shame" all these years later. P.S. "ILIS" is not by THE SUPREMES but by... DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES. Alllrite! Note: To see "I'm Livin' In Shame" listed at The Stonewall Club in 1969, visit: www.STONEWALLvets.org/songsofS tonewall-2.htm. |

Morning All, Hey zaya. Right bacatcha bro. I appreciate your kind words. I was touched by your reflections also. Yesssssssssssssss - my Mother helped broker a sweet deal for me. I am beside myself w/so much joy - because everything is falling into a wonderous place. "God Bless the Child", indeed. 1wicked - I was also touched by your revelation. Of course you know - your Mother has always been your Angel. She has always loved and guided you since she's been gone, therefore - you've always had the benefit of her love. We know that one day of the year doesn't tell the story of what our Mothers mean to us - but since the day is used to voice our appreciation - I wish us all a "Happy Mother's Day." We all have one. Btw - I see that Lionel Ritchie has a new CD out. I saw him on MSNBC last night. I had just mentioned him earlier on this board - and his song "Jesus Is Love." And so are Mothers, if one is blessed enough to testify about it. "KEEP YOUR HEAD TO THE SKY" |

My Mother rec'd one of her musical Motown gifts for "Mother's Day" in the mail yesterday, called me today and, as predicted, her favorite song on the DRS&TT's "Joined Together" c.d. is the 40-year classic "A House Is Not A Home" with honorable mention to "IGMYLM". Hey, Love Child ("Child" is the purr-fect name for a child to have on "M.D."), I hope your Mom is enjoying hers, too.

The whole Board has gotta thank U for this foto, Love Child! What a great photo of (Diva) DIANA ROSS & THE (Super) SUPREMES!!! How supreme is that? It appears that they may be singing "Love Child". It sure ain't that "luv chile" outfit on Ed Sullivan to debut the song. A beautiful, bonitisima, live-action, grand pic that I've never seen before. The girlz just have to reunite!!! Bi the way, your mother has great taste, in many ways. I'm distracted by a pic here, too. It's also supreme. Que un dia! P.S. Thanx for another suggestion of yet another c.d. gift I should get for my Mother this "M.D.": the MARVIN & TAMMI duets. She sure knows those songs from when I was a teenager at home. Played them a plenty!

Glad you like the pic Stoney! Actually that's Lady Di and The Girls singing "Reflections". They look slammin' in those silvery reflecting gowns. Diana re-visited this concept when she did the RTL tour in 2000..remember the silvery reflecting gowns worn by Di, Lynda and Scherrie? Great song...great gowns. Must thank my moms for bringing me up with this music. |

"Reflections of..." I sure do remember those eye-catching and gorgeous "reflecting" (how appropriate) mirrored gowns as DIANA, LYNDA and SCHERRIE -- the best mixture of Supremes (1-2-3 lead singers!!!) that anyone in the world has ever or will ever see -- descended that grand, curved, each step individually illuminated staircase while singing the opening #1 song "Reflections" with the colored, spinning, reflecting lights bouncing off the big mirrored disco ball and the "I stepped out of a dream sequence" mirrored gowns and the crowds going wild with glee and standing ovations. Personally, Love Child (they sure belted out your theme song), I have never seen such a spectacular concert like that -- and without the need of Gay boy dancers, pyro-whatever and circus show effects -- in my life!!! Bi the way, anyone who wants to see these gowns -- and the girlz -- can go to any internet search engine and enter these six words: Diana Ross Supremes Return Love Concert "Mr. Child"..... if U were on that old burnt-up Bored, some there would have gone even further nutz over the cuckoo than they already are over U stating "Di", as U know. Many there preferred to call her "The girl that didn't get to sing lead on "Buttered Popcorn". (Thank good God Almighty for dat!) And, rite U are, QUEEN DI -- for America, the United Kingdom and the World. |

My mum and I clash alot (different views of life) but we do get along nonetheless. I was laid up Mother' Day sick, but she sent the dinner over to my house since I couldn't be there. Too bad that I couldn't eat it until sometime last night! We also hung out in Philly this past Sat. It was one of the best times I have had with her and we plan to take a bus down to King of Prussia mall to do some shopping very soon! |
