Hello All: We are going to have another 45 Shindig in the Metro Detroit area this May. We are going to have it on a weekend this time. So if you asked about it before and could not attend because of work, this should work out better for you. If you have 45's please bring them, if you don't you can still come and enjoy the music. The appropriate sound system will be provides (an upgrade on the last one, I promise we will have a big sound) The last 45 throwdown was a great time, we had friendly informative people, smoking tunes, great beer and some cd's where given away. If you would like to come and enjoy what we do on the forum in a live mode give us a post and let us know if you will be attending. The tentative dates are either the weekend of the 15th or the 22nd, the time, exact day and location are still in the works. So if you are from the Michigan area come to the hootananny!!!! (sp)?

Hello Waymon: This is not the SD event from last year. This is a get together of folks from the Metro Detroit area that collect 45's or who just enjoy the soul sounds of the 60's & 70's. We are meeting monthly and play some tunes, talk and have a few drinks. |

Count me in. I don't know if this li'l ol' punk rocker has any obscure soul rekkids unfamiliar to the SD experts but I'll do my best. Anybody got a clean copy of "A Man's Confession" they can burn for me? It would be most appreciated. |

I'll bring along "David Ruffin's Tears" by Paul K. and the Weathermen. Paul's style is very Elmore Leonard meets Lou Reed/ Townes Van Zandt but the chorus of this song brings everything you love about Motown flooding right back. Great Jamerson-style bass in there, too. |

For the sd Detroiters: there's a record show on sunday, May 16th in Roseville (Gratiot south of Frazho). I'll be there trying to find something appropriate to bring to the throwdown. |

Soulaholic - I would love to drive up from Chicago to spin a few tunes, drink a few beers, & talk some soul. Alas the band SLOAN is playing on the 22nd & I'm going to the show. When you have another gathering...I would love to make it a Detroit day! |

Hey Soul.... mayhaps you didn't know, but we do that every Friday at Bert's Eastern Market (Detroit). Tunes from the '50s, '60s, '70s ..... lotsa pre-MOTOWN stuff. Blaque usually starts spinning about 6pm. Ya can bring your own CDs (I've burned all my old 45s ..... Thank heaven for CD & MP3 formats ..... too many boxes to keep moving and an excellent way to remove that pop-pop-hiss-hiss!) Everyone's welcome ..... and ya might want to bring your dancing shoes, too!! (Whew ..... that was a sad plug wasn't it?? LOL) |

Hey Rasputin: That sounds like a great time!! Our little get together is more intimate, we like to touch and look at the 45's (that sounds strange doesn't it!!) We get to meet and greet one another and have conversation, drinks and comraderie rather than dancing and drinks. I'm sure that great music is played at both places. I am going to have to stop in at Berts and bring a cd!! Thanks |

The following members from the SD web-site showed up and spun a few 60's & 70's Soul Records. Gary, Joe Moorhouse,Sideburnslim and Dana along with my self (Soulaholic) Brian T was their in spirit, he had to work the late shift. We will see you at the next get together on a weekend Brian. We got together in Ferndale at the Woodward Ave Brewery. So there was lots of Pint's, good food, great conversation about music and quite a few 45's took the spin on the turntable. The music this evening was basically in two camps the Detroit sound from the 60's was in full effect; Nolan Strong, La Mont Anthony, Ed Crook, Carolyn Crawford, Tommy Neal, Bill Coday, JJ Barnes and many more Detroit sounds where played. On the other side of the coin was the 70's soul sound with a strong rep for the Philly sound; Realistics, Hypnotics, 5 Specials, Philly Devotions, Velvets, Little Dooley, Free Spirit, De Blanc, Fantastic Johnny C, 4 Below Zero and many more. Along with The incredible Bongo Band, Blackblood, The Equals,Intruders, Darnell Simpkins, Jay & The Techniques, Gino Washington,Fatback Band, Marsha Hunt, Jodi GalesBad Bascomb, Younghearts, The Dynamics and a few more on top of those. I would say that about 60 tunes hit the wheel during the 3 1/2 or so we where together. The conversation crossed a wide spectrum of what and when Soul music was the best 60's vs. 70's, A discussion about the Northern scene, record buying, how each of us got into the scene. Of course there was a little conversation about the SD site and some of our favorite post's. It was interesting to see how each individual had a take on a certain artist and then to hear a tune that was in a different style than what they where known for. There was a conversation about how each of us had a record from someones collection that had their name and street address on a lable on the 45 (James Bunton, from Ypsilanti, MI.) James where ever you are now we all say thanks for taking good care of your records. We all feel that you had a killer collection once. lol Now on the other hand Barry Felder where ever you are now, you beat the crap out of your 45's and carving your name in the vinyl was not such a good thing. Great collection poor care of them though, Joe Moorehouse believs you justed loved them to death. Gary had some great stories about growing up in Detroit and living within a few blocks of David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Jackiw Wilson and the wonderful Ms. G. Knight. I guess Alvins on Cass was a happening place once. Soulaholic...that is some camera you got, my man. It's amazing that you could take a picture of me, and VOILA! Out pops a picture of my father. I had a great time last night and I hope we can do it again real soon. Post Number: 4 Registered: 4-2004 Posted From: 152.163.252.166 Posted on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 - 6:19 pm: Joe Moorehouse ------------------------------ ------------------------------ -------------------- Great music, great beer, lotsa laughs with nice people. Thanks for putting this thing together, Brian. I've awarded myself a Masters Degree in '70s Philly soul as a result of all the stuff you spun last night--wouldn't have been surprised to pass the Liberty Bell on my way back to Ann Arbor. Next time we can bring a nice stack of amps and blow that bar's sound system back to the stone age where it belongs. Hello Leo B: I have had my grand mother of 100 years of age pass on this wednesday and it has left me with quite a few things to do in order to get ready to go up to Boston to attend to her furneral and the affairs that are involved with this matter. Yes the event will be held on Saturday, I have asked Sideburn Slim to give a little input on the choice of location and I will post it on Thursday. I thank-you and every one else who is coming for their understanding in this matter, with all that I have to attend to in the next few days. |

Due to the unfortunate set of circumstances surrounding Soulaholics Grandmother he has asked me to find a place for the next 45 party. I thought that Como's in Ferndale, Motor City Brew Works or Honest Johns in Detroit would all be suitable. But, I thought I would leave it up to a vote. So, I need every one to tell me where they would like to meet. |

Soulaholic...you and your family are in my prayers. My grandmother died in 2000 at the age of 104, so I can totally sympathize with what you are going through. Sideburnslim...I vote for Como's, but the other spots you named are fine too, if that's where the majority wants to do it. |
