I've exchanged a couple of mails with the book's author...apparently there will be a CD to accompany it's publishing...it will have NSoul appeal.

Hey Flynny, Thanks for the great link. Where I came from, Beach music was the biggest thing happening, bigger than the English invasion or even Motown per se, even though it did incorporate select Motown. The criteria was always whether you could shag (the dance) to it. The Tams, General Johnson & Chairmen of the Board, Billy Scott & the Georgia Prophets were the first show bands I ever saw as a teenager. Loved the band photos. There were about a dozen pictures of regional bands that I had seen thirty-some years ago and had totally forgotten. Brought back some wild memories of drinking PJ and steamin' up some back seat windows! In the 80's, I was a DJ at this huge Beach music club in Myrtle Beach, SC called Studebakers and in the late 90's did afternoon drive on a Beach music radio station called The Breeze that simulcasted in Charleston, Hilton Head, Columbia, SC and Wilmington NC. A lot of history and memories. Thanks again for the great link! |

John......I'm from Columbia, SC originally and currently live on Hilton Head Island.....and can concur with your comments. Beach Music is really just a catch phrase used by some in these parts for classic soul/r&b.....with the addition of the local bands listed here......A local DJ in Columbia, "Shakin' Dave Aiken", still plays classic r&b/beach on Sunday nights on the local oldies station. It's big......Soul music and r&b was huge in South Carolina at one time.....Unlike other kids I didn't convert to rock.....I stuck with soul, listened to dad's records and grew from there.....I've never been a big fan of the regional bands, but I enjoy the fact that they encourage an interest in national classic soul. |

Hey Galactus, us Southern guys just about have this thread to ourselves (LOL). Ditto about the local beach music bands, groups like the Catalinas or, especially, the Embers in their tacky-ass Hawaiian shirts and their super-schmaltzy "I Love Beach Music" anthem. When I worked for the Breeze, we had a song library of about 1200 songs and a Scott Systems "Touch Screen"; whenever a song like "I Love Beach Music" or "Carolina Girls" would come up, I would yank it and insert something infinately cooler, yet still shag-able, like Joe Turners "Flip Flop & Fly" or Willie Tee's "Walkin' Up a One-Way Street"! Just curious, did you ever hear my old station, The Breeze? We only had a metro-radius signal in Columbia but we boomed with a gargantuan 100,000 watt stick in Hilton Head in the late 90's... |

Sounds like you're my kind of DJ, John!! Nothing against the local bands, but they tend to sound a bit cheesy......Why play them when you can play the real thing, right? "The Breeze" I do believe I remember! It didn't last long enough, did it? Then, for awhile, Columbia had a nice r&b oldies station.....but I'm not sure what the deal is with that station now. These days in Hilton Head we're generally overrun by Savannah stations, and they really offer very little in the way of classic r&b. We have a hard time picking up stations from elsewhere.... BTW....What do you know about ex-Auburn and ex-Clemson basketball coach Cliff Ellis? I hear he's a pretty good beach music singer! Apparently he's well reputed among basketball coaching fraternities to actually have some soul! lol....

Hey Flynny, Of the groups you listed, I saw the Nomads many many years ago but I noticed that there were two groups with that name(one in Sumter, SC, the other in Columbia, SC-home based surprizingly close together for groups with identical names). So I'm not sure which Nomads I saw. I've seen The Embers, they're still very active, but as Galactus and I mentioned, they're kinda cheesy . Don't know anything re: the others you mentioned. Galactus, I'll have to check with some friends about former Clemson coach Cliff Ellis; I've heard of him but had no idea he sang. Yeah, the Breeze only lasted on the air from '93 to 2000 and I was only there for the last three years, helping drive it right into the ground, apparently! But it was the most fun I've ever had on the radio when it came to the music I was able to play. I went to work every day knowing that I would get to play some Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker and Joe Turner! In today's world of tightly-structured corporate radio, it was such an anomaly that I suppose it was predestined to fail. The Hilton Head frequency you might have heard was 97.9FM. |

John.....check out these links on Ellis: http://www.auburntigers.com/me nsbasketball/page.cfm?doc_id=4 05 "In addition to being ranked among the nations elite basketball coaches, Ellis is also a musician, author and ostrich farmer. He started in the recording business before coaching and has released many records. In 1991, he released a record called "Loveland" by Cliff Ellis and the EBS All-Star Blues Band. He cut another record, "Cliff Ellis and Friends," which includes several rock 'n roll songs and a rendition of "Amazing Grace" dedicated to the late Jim Valvano, a close friend who taught Ellis much about life through his battle with cancer. "Shake, Rattle and Roll," another song on the compact disc, has climbed all the way to No. 13 on the "Beach Music" charts. His most recent CD is People Get Ready in which he collaborated with Grammy winner Marty Rabun (Shenandoah) and former Auburn players." I assume "Loveland" is the old Charles Watts song... http://www.ripete.com/cliffell is.html Weird, huh? I had no idea he was this into it, myself......Apparently he's part of that "cheesy" crowd.....but give him credit.....I guess holding down a head coaching job and singing beach music is pretty time consuming! Of course, he's got all the time in the world to sing now.....since Auburn fired him back in March!! LOL..... |

Galactus, After seeing the wholesome photo of Cliff and his family, I'm not sure if I want to hear him singing, "Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu Linda Lu!" |

Yeah.....It's hard to imagine him singing that stuff, isn't it? I've never heard him myself.....so I have no idea. To hear Cliff speak, you'd never guess he sings.......Very deep, southern drawl.... But Tubby Smith, the coach at UK, swears he's pretty good......who knows? |
