Hey hey Solaholic;
Not personally but I remember the name Independents who had a good record but don't recall the title. Yes, on the Masqueraders, love them, I have quite a few tracks by them on CD & tape in my stash, as well as a complete CD by them, but packed away in storage boxes. Not at my fingrertips. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Thanx again Solaholic for the scanning info.

Soul Children were a quartet with Stax.. later a trio.. male voice was J. Blackfoot..later solo with 'Taxi' and still recording and performing.. and still in excellent voice.Check out my webpage for more about this 'awesome' group. If you like your soul raw and gospelly..then this is essential listening.

Soulaholic....there a lot of memories in those scans !! LOL

The Masqueraders were a Dallas based group with a great local rep...and went national when signed by Isaac Hayes. When I left Texas (1984) some form of the group was still making appearances.

The Independednts have been discussed here before...try the "Old Forum". Charles "Chuck" Jackson went on to partner with Marvin Yancey and wrote all of those great Natalie Cole hits. He now resides in L.A. and is still involved (too a much lesser degree) in the business. He wrote two songs that were to have made Aretha's last CD...but apparently $$$ issues could not be resolved.

Free Life got their deal thru Philip Bailey, and though one single did chart fairly well...I wouldn't call them very successful overall. Member Carl Carlwell later worked with a group called 101 North.

I loved the Soul Children...real "gritty" sound. I have not heard anything about the group...but former member John Colbert, a/k/a J. Blackfoot ("TAXI") still gigs in the Memphis area.

The Olympic Runners....(LOL). I haven't heard their name since former member Pete Wingfield charted with "18 With A Bullet".

Independents..The group were conceived as a vehicle for the team of Charles Jackson and Marvin Yancey.. again.. soul/gospel....recordings were limited... 'Just As Long As You Need Me'--'Leaving Me' and 'Baby I've Been Missing You' are not to be missed. The group disbanded in 1974.
The pairing of Jackson /Yancy went on to create material for Natalie Cole.

Barry

PS...I know there are some members who are younger than this scribe...so I'll say this.. you need to get to listen to these groups...they leave anything that was heard in the 80's way behind...Gloria Estaban, Maria Carey, and a variety of other artists I read about on the forum.... not soul compared to the above two groups..people.. go back to the roots..
...right.. I'll get down off my soap-box now!!

Hi, Soulaholic and all!

Very nice covers that breath the spirit of seventies!

You have write "Unemployement Blues" as a group name and this is the title of the album by Force Of Nature, who previously was known as Soul Devalents and before recording for PIR recorded in Gamble and Thom Bell's Tommy labels. I wish someday find this Lp (as many other PIR rarities!)

I have the single "Listen" by Masqueraders and also have had the Lp. Also i read that Masqueraders were almost to signing with Gamble & Huff before signed to Isaac Haye's Hot Buttered Soul.

Peace & Soul Food!

Nice shots! I'd love to hear some of those LPs. I have the Hot LP & would trade it in a minute for one of those! I've never heard of a few of those groups!

Regarding The Independents: I believe that Chuck Jackson was a member of Jerry Butlers Writers Workshop. nHe was interested in writing & producing. When his first song was about to be recorded, he had no male singer & he got pulled into the group as a singer. He really had no intent or interest in singing as part of a group. As such, he broke away & with Marvin Yancy, began writing & producing for Yancy's future wife, Natalie.

Hey Soulaholic;
I have New Birth, Manhattans, Melvin Van Peebles, & Black Ivory out of this group.

Soulaholic, does this 'Creative Source' album have "Ready Made Family" on it? That female singing lead kicks butt!

Hi S.S.

Ready Made Family is by Creative Funk & it is truly great!!!! I want about 12 or 13 when it came mout. About 10 years ago, I finally found the 45s again. When we were kids, we wore our records out on those little portables. You know, you ended up putting a penny on the tone arm to get a little more play out of the needle. Damn, the records we messed up that way. As popular as that song was here in N.Y., would you believe that song didn't chart R&B???? Amazing!!!

Juice;
Thanks, I know exactly what you mean, I did the same thing with the penny and my portable that use to go everywhere till it was stolen at a James Brown Show at the Howard in DC!
Gotta get some sleep now still not done with what I need to do but I'm tired!

Yes... I don't knwo how I missed this thread in the first place... LOL
FRom the first post I especially loved that Masterfleet LP... it is really a funky LP...
The Counts LP is also a favourite... Leroy Emmanuel is still active with his LMT band and he lives in Toronto... he just finished a European tour at the end of last year and is scheduled to come back later on this year...
It's hard to pick up any album cos' they are all so great, but the Modulations stand out as the two Morning Noon & Night LP's, Mandrill and that great second LP by the Voices of East Harlem which was produced by Leroy Hutson (this guy has done so many great albums...)
From Bohannon I prefer this LP :

stop&go
An older but very funky LP by Ray Alexander Technique
rat
A fantastic early Philly sound LP
Ambassadors
The fantastic (lp & cover) Terry Callier
TC
Another rare funk LP on a TK subsidiary
cc
A rare soul LP from Chicago I believe
CLASS SET
And just another one for the road... the great LP by Don JUlian & the Larks with some of the tracks which ended up on the Shorty The Pimp Soundtrack...
DJ & L

If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go!

Hi Soulaholic,

I once owned
New York City Band (even before LV w/ Change)
First Class
Masterfleet
Hot Ice
Soul Child
Mirettes (I think is an LA/Oakland group?)

Living Proof (Is an Detroit group),
I remember this album quite vividly because they had a hit song called "You and I". This had to be around 78 cause it was a lot of good R&B,Funk music came out that yr.

Wonder B,
I had at one time these 3 lp's

Bohannon's - Stop Go
The Larks - Super Slick
and Terry Callier's What Color Is Love once on Cd.

Hello again, Soulful Brothers & Sisters!

Hey Soulaholic!
You got a very envoyable collection!

Of all you shows here, these are the albums I have (or have had in the past):
-Masqueraders "Everybody Wanna lives On" (today only have the single "Listen". Good harmonies
-Trammps (untitled album). (As the Masqueraders, today in posession of a girlfriend). I have some tunes in "Disco Champs" PIR album.
-Blackbyrds "Flying Start". Good fusion. my fave is "Future Children Future Hopes", is very joyful.
-Blue Magic "Magic Of The Blue". One of my all-time favorites (especially "looking For A friend" and "Let me Be The One")
-People's Choice "Boogie Down USA". Good funky album with a killer mellow soul number "Don't Send Me Away"

Also have some individual tunes of other albums in some as by Lonnie liston Smth and Three Degrees compilation.

What album is that you write "a very good Philly Sound album"? I can't read the title or artist.

Peace & Soul Food!

I remember these some of these artists. I didn't know that Carl Carlwell was in Free Life...that song "Wish That You Were Here" was a smoker!

I also remember the group 101 North, which had to do with George Duke, if I'm not mistaken.
