So I'm in a restaurant in Birmingham (UK) last night and the background music is quite good soul, jazz funk etc. Anyway in a sandwich between James Brown and Bob and Earl this Motown thing comes on that was right out of place really. I've never heard it before and it just floored me. Lovely, lovely song. But what the hell is it? No point asking in the restaurant. Can't give you many clues I'm afraid but here goes... Its a girl with girl backing vocals... or a girl group. Would be mid sixties definitely. It's upper mid tempo - not a stomper. Its got lovely strings. Here's the only worthwhile clue... towards the end I heard the lead vocal sing the line "eternally"... it was at a key moment... the track had almost left her in the clear, but I dont think that was the title. And no it wasn't the Charmaines track. She had a lovely light voice... More Brenda than Gladys. Could almost be a latter day Marvelettes I would say definitely Motown top to bottom and certainly was not a big hit. Help! I must track this song down its absolutely bloody gorgeous! Ravings of a mad man over. HELP! |

Could it be Tammi Terrell's 'Come On And See Me' ? Seems to fit your description, and the chorus ends with: "I've got some joy love for some boy love, And it can be y-o-urs.... e-terna-lly" (Message edited by Ritchie on May 01, 2004) |

From your description of 'girl group' background vocals, I tend to think it's Diana Ross & The Supremes' version of the Tammi Terrell hit, Come On And See Me'. Tammi's version features a predominantly male (Spinners) vocal background. One further question, if it is the song that has been suggested, there is a part somewhat in the middle of the song where the lead sings 'honey', 'sugar', 'baby', 'honey' ' elongating the syllables of each word, echoed by the background vocalists doing the same. In Tammi's case , she throws in a prominent 'y' sound, hence honey becomes ha-ya-ya- ya-nee; sugar beconmes su-yu-yu-yu-gar. Diana extends the syllables but does not throw in the additional y sound. I hope that this helps. |

Thanks for the extra info PJ. It was a noisy restaurant and I can't be absolutely certain, but I think it was Tammi's version I heard. Now I'm really shamefaced because in almost 35 years as a soul fan, it had never registered on my radar! And what a gorgeous track it is... so pleased to have found it. I guess that's one of the joys of soul music... you just never know when you're going to stumble on a classic that has slipped you by. In case anyone else hasn't heard it, Brian Ellis let me have this link and if you scroll around you'll find Tammi Terrell, Come on and see me, on this page http://the.soulclub.org/ |

You'll find Tammi's recording on her Essential Collection, issued here a couple of years back on Spectrum - and at a bargain price to boot. Here's the tracklist: I Can't Believe You Love Me / That's What Boys Are Made For / Come On And See Me / What A Good Man He Is / Tears At The End Of A Love Affair / This Old Heart Of Mine Is (Weak For You) / He's The One I Love / Can't stop Now (Love Is Calling) / Just Too Much To Hope For / Hold On My Darling / I Can't Go On Without You / Baby Don't You Worry / There Are Things / Two Can Have A Party (Solo Version) / Lone Lonely Town / Slow Down / I Gotta Find A Way To Get You Back / Ain't No Mountain High Enough (With Marvin Gaye)

I just discovered this sight and I love it. I thought I had remembered every oldie but goodie there was, and I ran across this posting on Tammie Terrell. I had truly forgotten about this one. I have to see if I can locate it. |

I know it's off topic, but, a testament to the knowledge on SD and the web: I hit http://the.soulclub.org/. Listened to a few tracks. Then heard Herbert Hunter's "I Was Born To Love You". Searched SD forum archives and to my surprise found nothing which tells me he wasn't a Detroiter. Finally found this link about Herbert, a Nashville R&B cat who never made it big. http://www.munichrecords.com/m unich/Newsite/BIOS/HUNTERS.htm

Larry, Herbert's 'IWBTLY' is a much loved/well respected track on the Northern Soul scene, a classic even, and has been since the 70's. Other tracks from him that have made it onto scene turntables are, 'The big oak tree' and 'Isn't it wonderful to dream'. May I recommend that you track down the Kent CD compilation of Ted Jarrett's material (inc. Herbert Hunter, Peggy Gaines, Gene Allison, Freddie Waters etc) if you can, 'Music City Soul (KEND 157). |
