I was reading the thread about Stevie Wonders' upcoming CD release. I thought about it & realized that he's been on ONE label since 1961 (considering Tamla-Motown to be one & the same). That would mean that he's been with for 43 YEARS without pause!!!!! Is there any other entertainer who's had anything close to this type of longevity with one record label???

Hey Juice Free! I only knows in the first 80's Johnny Mathis celebrated his 25 years with Columbia nad don't knows if he changed of company any time. Peace & Soul Food |

Johnny Mathis was on Mercury for a few years in the mid '60s. Although Columbia continued to issue previously recorded records during that period, I don't believe he was recording with them at that time. He returned to Columbia in the late '60s. So, I don't believe it was 25 consecutive years in the purest sense. |

I'm not sure, but Aretha was with Atlantic or (ATCO) recording label for years, before Arista. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this. |

Yes after her stint with Columbia, she hit the big times at Atlantic with Jerry Wexler at the knobs and stayed there from the mid 60's until the early 80's I believe... How thin she was back then... Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! |

True! Aretha was with Columbia from 1960 to 1966. Was with Atlantic from 1967 to 1979 & with Arista from 1980 to present. Has she really been with Arista for 24 years???? WOW!!! Juice (Message edited by Juicefree20 on May 01, 2004) |

I know Medusa, I wasn't trying to be mean in any way, it's just that I'd love for Aretha to live on as long as she possibly can and from what I saw of her recent performances her weight might be a serious threat to her health... she seemed out of breath on a few occasions... WB |

I guess that I'll check my Billboard Pop book. This could be interesting. (Message edited by Juicefree20 on May 03, 2004) |

Smokey Robinson has not swayed away from Motown either...and before she departed, how long was Lady Diana with Motown? |

I thought that Smokey left for the label SBK some years ago. Was SBK a subsidiary of Motown?? |

BARBRA STREISAND has been with Columbia Records over 40 years since before her million-selling "People" -- a song that many of the Motown galz such as DIANA (solo), THE SUPREMES (as a group) and FLO (separately) have all enjoyed recording and performing. By the way, Columbia -- Ree Ree's old label -- is the only label Barbra has even been with. Same goes for STEVIE w/ Motown.

Well, "J", U are quite welcome. That's what these boards are for -- one of the reasons -- to exchange 411. Technically, I believe B.S. has been with Columbia since 1962 when she was a young girl star on Broadway. Columbia had the rights to the play "Funny Girl", too. Bi the way, GLADYS KNIGHT sho 'nuff didn't overlook BABS. On the recent VH-1 hit show, "Divas 2004", Gladys sang her prior single-release version of "The Way We Were", another #1 for Miss STREISAND, born in Brooklyn, don't U know.
