Last night, Bettye LaVette won the W. C. Handy award for Comeback CD of the year. Her acceptance speech was the emotional highpoint of the evening and she blew the house away with her performance later on. Photos to follow.

I will post the pics after Bettye gets a chance to see them first. She's on her way from Memphis to Clarksdale, MS to shoot a PBS special and will be home in a couple days. |

Everything has it's space and time in this lifetime. I really do believe it's her time at long last. Bettye has been working the last year like never before and she truly deserves it. Good things come to those who wait as they always say. |

Great news, and a well deserved award. She oozes soul. But I bet Bettye would say she's never been away to "come back." |

Coolcat, We joked about that at the dinner. I told her the award was misnamed, and that it was really the "We Finally Caught Up With You" Award. |

I love the lady and her voice... My friend Gilles was the one who owns the company who put out the ATCO unreleased recordings on Bettye a couple of years ago under the title 'SOUVENIRS' (check it here http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDSUB040403020826080634&sql=Az808b5n49sqa ) Just beautiful stuff... And another one with the famous Brown Bomber Joe Louis... Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! (Message edited by Wonder B on May 01, 2004) |

And my congratulations too, Bettye, Never seen you live although everyone who has ever been to one of your concerts raves about your performance. Hope to remedy this situation the very next time you come to England. David. |

a real unique one-of-kind voice, I have always loved her from her 1st recording "My Man-He's A Loving Man" for Johnnie Mae Matthews right up to her latest. in the mid-80's she and I went out for dinner at a nice italian place to discuss getting her back out there with some new cuts, over a bottle of wine we both started singing in there and blew those peoples minds. I love her and she does deserve every good thing that comes her way. |

I held the door for Bettye (didn't know it was Bettye) after she hopped out of a cab in NYC . She was going into Columbia U's performing theatre....No assistants no nothin'....so later the show went on . It was a double bill with the legendary Maxine Brown...I was very impressed. Baby Washington,Juggy Murray, and 'Cookie' Margaret Ross and some Broadway divas were in attendance as was a couple of the revamped Ritchie Family (ugh!) People in America really don't appreciate the greatness of these gifted performers like Ms Lavette and Madeline Bell who left the US with Mahalia in the 60s and didn't bother coming back to a place where she would go unappreciated.Ms Bettye does a lot of her touring in UK and Netherlands as well.....Meanwhile weeks go by and there aint a single diva in attendance in the biggest soul city of them all . NYC....maybe I'm wrong! Is NYC the bigest 'soul' city? If it aint I'd better get packing...I need to see some SOUL SPECTACULARs soon.
