The NY (?) based group Universal Mind cut in Philly in the early 70's for the Red Coach label (Gene Redd owned I think). These cuts were produced by Jessie James and amongst other songs, they cut the Atkines-Bellmon-Drayton-Turner song "Something Fishy Goin On". A short while later they cut a song called "A Chance at Love " for the Charles record label. Anyone know where this track was recorded & where this label was based (NY again?). Sweetpea Atkinson has just cut a new version of this song as a guest vocalist on a Texas blues guitarists new album & his version is great. I don't think I have ever heard UniMinds original version. Anyone here know It ??

It's a nice production that. When it came out, there was a rumour in the UK that The Universal Mind were, in fact, the Carstairs. I suspect it was just wishful thinking, with it being on the same label as "It really hurts me girl". Something fishy had a similar mid tempo vibe, but not nearly in the same class. I guess if it really was the Carstirs, then the truth would have surfaced by now, given that their Red Coach outing is held in such awe over here. Not very helpful that was it? Sorry! |

I've heard Universal Minds version of "Chance At Love" now & must say I prefer the new version, vocals provided by Sweetpea Atkinson on blues guitarist Pat Boyack's 'Voices from the Streets' Doc Blues Records CD. Richard Searling will be playing the new version on his Smooth FM radio show in just over an hours time. |
