Just got home from an Evening With Mary Wilson, opening the "Reflections: Mary Wilsons Supreme Legacy" exhibit. The show started 30 minutes late. The surprize and treat was the original "Vandellas" being her backup singers, Roz and Annette! Mary started off the show with "You Keep Me Hanging On" and immediately starting having problems of some sort vocally or not hearing the feedback correctly frequently adjusting the devices in her ears (whatever they're called?)This seemed to plague her all evening. She attempted "I am changing" and finally gave up.....embarassing. She struggled with the synthesizer player, but couldn't get on pitch or remember the lyrics? A better "Body and Soul" was delivered sitting down. Then, there was a question and answer segment with one of the museums curators, I believe. Interesingly, she stated she merely kept the Supremes going to save her own job and inferred maybe she should have gone it alone instead. She did NOT seem interested in talking about the 70's Supremes. The show ended with Mary and the Vandellas singing "Dancing In The Streets", perhaps the best song of the evening, though short. It was great seeing Roz and Annette, as I've never seen them. They met people at a table after the show for autographs, etc. The exhibit itself was nicely done, I thought. It was neat seeing those awesome gowns in person, though, some are now showing their age. The pictures and constant running video of The Supremes performances were great. If you have an opportunity and are a fan, certainly worth a trip! Oh, Mary did say she's putting the finishing touches on her new CD and should be ready by the end of the year. I wanted to ask her about a 70's reunion tour, but, after she got kind of cool when that group of Supremes were mentioned.....I didn't have the nerve. Too bad, they were my favorite line-up! |

Had the story on Mary and her dresses here in Detroit. Many of the dresses were bought in Detroit area stores, and we dug up some great photos of the Supremes trying on dresses at Saks on the boulevard, from our archives. http://www.detnews.com/2004/li festyle/0404/27/c01-134376.htm |
