I am a big fan of this phenominal woman! (Excuse the spelling) Could anyone give me any background on her? And I have her greatest hits CD as well as the Remix album featuring remixes done by Portishead and others...are there any more releases that I could get on CD? Also, is she still doing concerts? |

Hi there Lady Mystique. SHIRLEY BASSEY is a bit of a national institution here in the U.K. This link should provide you with some information. http://www.geocities.com/Holly wood/Boulevard/8612/shirley.ht ml Back in the seventies she appeared a couple of times on THE MORECAMBE AND WISE SHOW on BBC T.V. where they used to insist on getting her name wrong and calling her "Birley Shassey" .. think about it! I had heard of Shirley Bassey throughout the years, but I never really paid that much attention to her. That was until the late 80s when I saw her perform HEY JUDE on a Royal Variety show. That one performance turned me into a huge fan. Since then, I have collected every album and cd that I could find. Every so often, she'll put out a new cd, but usually its only released overseas. I end up finding them as imports. Some recent ones are SHIRLEY BASSEY SINGS THE MOVIES, THE BIRTHDAY CONCERT, and CAN I TOUCH YOU THERE. She still does concerts, although she doesn't hit the US all that often. However, she did play Boston back in 2000, and I was lucky enough to catch her show. One of the best performances I've ever seen. |

She did three NSoul tunes that I'm aware of, Frank...'Don't take the lovers from this world' and 'Give him your love' both you United Artists, and 'Clown town' on Decca (?) blank label test presses. My fave of the three is GHYL, which is a beat-balld that builds and builds, with a trade-mark long note from the lady near the end! (Also love her 'Mister kiss-kiss-bang-bang', which almost becmae a James Bond theme...but the powers that be decided to change the title of the movie to 'Thunderball' and some bloke called Jones from Wales got the gig!) |

I have an old issue of Downbeat magazine from 1968 that includes a Dionne Warwick "Blindfold Test". They play her a Shirley Bassey record and 15 seconds into it she says, "Well, you might as well take that off right now; I can't stand her.." So that's one person's opinion.. |
