Oh my, my. Where do I start? Well, I suppose it's appropriate to ask, where were YOU when you first heard Issac Hayes' album, "Hot Buttered Soul"? (Sorry, to this "young" woman, I will always say "album". Can't change that mindset as it pertains to Hot Buttered Soul!) Truly the album was revolutionary for several reasons. It was an "album" with about 5 or 6 (correct me please) stone jams! It was not a question of which song you liked the best and you could run out and purchase the single. NO! The album was one "single" entity and it was truly musical poetry. Take it ALL or take none. My first time found me on the floor with about 12 other people. Yes, we celebrated this occasion with a "listening" party. The album was nowhere to be found on the day it came out. We decided that who ever got it first would have the party. Keep in mind, the tools of the internet such as iPods and other sophisticated home recording techniques were not as plentiful back in the day. I think someone in the group had a cassette recorder but the quality just didn't match that of the album, so it was quickly discarded. Back to the listening party. We were chilling with homemade sangria and wine cheese on Ritz. The mood was mellow. The lights were low. Someone ran and quickly found a "blue" bulb (red and blue bulbs were stocked at all times). The ambiance was penetrating, literally! A couple of people were playing backgammon (that was the cool thing to do back then) as they tried to concentrate on their game AND the music. Then "Phoenix" (By The Time I Get) started. Backgammon game stopped, wine glasses stopped clinking, the wax wrapper of the Ritz crackers was silent. The breathing in the room was measured, almost as if you were HOLDING your breath because the music was "breath"taking! When the song was over everyone was silent. Someone went back to the record player, lifted the needle and started the same song again. That scene replayed itself about 10 times. In other words, the music blew us away and we wanted more, more, MORE! But I'm curious, what was *your* experience with "Hot Buttered Soul"? A- PS: I love you SoulfulDetroit! |

It might have came out when I wasn't here yet, but I remember my mum playing it...she has ALL of his records! |

Hi Lady Mystique. How are you? Sure enough, even a child listening to Issac Hayes would never forget it. I remember a few years back I played so many Motown songs and with a CD player you can "repeat" as long as you want to hear it. Well, my sons said MOM! We're not feeling that music. So I made a deal, when I'm in the car, *my* music plays. And when you're in the house you can play all the rap you want. What a SWEET deal! I would play my jams and singing away while they sat in the car for a talent show! If you listen to some of Jay-Z's song he uses a few Motown tracks and I love Jay-Z! LOL, I'm probably old enough to be a lot SD' Momma (and Grandmother!) and I would be very proud! Thanks Lady Mystique for stopping in. ((hug)) A- |

I was in the waiting room office of Tera Shirma, playing Gin with my secretary, NeicaLee Rompollo. Hayes and company were in the studio working on the album. Although we knew good things were going on in there, we had no idea at the time what a landmark album this was going to become. |

We got back together, big mistake. Well it wasn't long before I did drop him for good and moved on big time singing "By The Time I Get To Pheonix"! S.S. |

I bought on 8-track and it would click channels in the middle of those long songs. Very annoying. But I loved it anyway; it was so different from any form of soul music I had heard up to that point |

That album was the bomb, I listened to it over and over. Ike's rendition of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", was revolutionary and oh so soulful. Who would have thought that an originally penned Glenn Campbell tune would send me into a tailspin. |

Hi John, I know JUST what you mean when you were in the groove especially with "Phoenix" and you heard a fade than a "click" (those DARN 8 tracks!). I was so happy when CD's were invented with a "repeat" option and affordable Hi Nosey! I know so many people who took "Phoenix" so personal (including myself). It was an anthem for so many relationships that were breaking apart and the pain that it causes. Visualizing what the woman (or man) was doing now that you have left. Sleeping, waking, crying. SO powerful. A- |

Arcadia! I agree that song made you look inward and reassess what was going on in your life. Is that the same album with "Guilty (I Stand Accused)" on it? If so, my baby who is 26 now, loves that song. |

When the Hot Butter Soul LP came out, I was livin' on the Westside of Chi. I was going through the times that the music reflected and vice versa. A lot of memories there Arcadia, a lot of memories. |

Folks: My brother Jesse bought "Hot Buttered Soul" when I was three years old (apologies to those who are saying "damn, now I feel old!"). However, I didn't listen to the album until I was seven. At the time my Dad was away on business for the American Baptist Church (which lasted for two years)and I was missing him terribly. So, when I heard Isaac sing "Walk On By" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" both songs brought tears to my eyes. This album helped me get through a very tough time as a youngster and I still have my brother's copy of the album (as well as a second one that I bought many years later). A little history behind Hot Buttered Soul - Isaac cut the album at the request of Stax/Volt's Al Bell, who was appointed president of the label. Al promised the label's new owners Gulf & Western and Jim Stewart (who was Stax's chairman and co-founder) that the company would release over one hundred album titles in one year! Therefore, Isaac recorded Hot Buttered Soul with the understanding that it would be his only contribution to help Al & he could resume his work as staff producer and songwriter. The result - "Hot Buttered Soul" sold over one million copies (certified gold by the RIAA) and was a #1 album on Billboard's R&B and Jazz(!) Charts (it hit #9 on the Pop Album listings). I had the great pleasure of mixing the Hot Buttered Soul album. I knew at the time this would be a big album for Isaac, but that was over 30 years ago. Reading this thread really makes me feel great because having been there and how many lives it touched is more than I can express. |

Russ, I'll never forget your enthusiasm at that time. It caught the attention of the Brass, because Al Bell came to see me in my office to tell me he wanted you to mix the album. You obviously had been blowing them away in the control room. |

Wow! Apparently some "R"&"R" history is being made at SD today! God Bless the internet and SD. I appreciate your comments Russ and Ralph so much. I think musical history is so VERY important and I appreciate the input you are providing in this thread. Russ, you helped create something that can't ever be repeated in that time, in that place. And Ralph, you witnessed that history being made. The only question I have for you is who won the gin game? Hugs to ((Ralph)) and ((Russ)) A- |

Arcadia, The Gin games between NeicaLee and I were legendary and were discussed on the old forum. We discussed studio business during these contests. Maybe it served as a diversion or maybe we just liked the competetive friendship we shared. Whatever, we were pretty evenly matched but Neica likes to dispute that fact. |

I got turned onto this record in the late '80s while listening to an interview with "Punk Rock Icon" Henry Rollins on KCRW in LA. He has brilliant taste in music, and on this show he played some of his favorite tracks, and did a long spiel on the "Hot Buttered Soul" album before playing "By the Time I Get to Phoenix". I was floored, and got the album a little while later.. BTW, Ralph, I really appreciated that note you wrote to me on the old forum, on a thread about drummers; thanks for the personal greeting, MC |
