Since the Chancellor of Soul put up the thread Blue Eyed Soul...I started thinking about African American/Carribean/Latino artists who sound 'white'... The few that come to mind for me are... Fifth Dimension Dionne Warwick Johnny Nash (some songs) Tony Orlando-Dawn Dobie Grey any more, sdf? (Message edited by westside314 on April 28, 2004) |

Dionne Warwick (unlike her soul-sounding sister Deedee). Lena Horne Diahann Carroll Barbara McNair Billy Eckstein Nat King Cole Jesse Belvin Tommy Edwards Brook Benton Johnny Mathis Johnny Hartman Jimmy Scott Mel Carter Lenny Welch Jackie Wilson The Domonoes and many 1950's groups & soloists!! Example of groups from the 60's: The Toys, 5th. Dimension, 'group'that sang "I Hear A Symphony", The Supremes and so on....... The list goes on & on.......and some names can be misleading so let me explain: I suppose you can say that about any pop artist or jazz standard balladeer, though I'm NOT neccesarily speaking about "singing from the soul" but rather clear enunciation & diction in their sound rather than in their feeling in alot of cases. The afore mentioned enunciation and diction thing makes this a topic I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. The commercial history of music in America, cultural and social conditioning, and the general issue of stereotypes conspire to make this one trickier than meets the eye. |

Soul Sister : Hi! I mean like when I would listen to a radio I would say 'That's a Black person singing that?' They sound like a white person...and yes enunciation has something to do with it and sound...who wrote the music? etc...etc... No Harm no foul... |

Hi DyvaNaye; You get where I'm coming from, its simply how the song was sung and thats the way we hear it period. The music to our ears. And you are correct about the type of song too. Eddie Levet talked about "Wildflower" in the O'Jays' live concert, saying when he first heard the song he thought is was a white cat trying to do a black thing, then he found out it was a black cat trying to do a white thing. (?) He couldn't tell. Thanks girlfriend for your input. S.S. Hi SudiKamau; I think you were going someplace deeper than just hearing the song, thats NOT where I was heading, thats a WHOLE other topic. Thats a good topic for Isaiah ! I wouldn't touch that one either, for I have not the time or the energy right now. S.S. |

Soul Sister: The singer Eddie Levert was referring to was Donny Gerard, the lead singer of the group Skylark (Donny is bi-racial). Founded in Vancouver BC by Gerard & keyboardist (and future record producer) David Foster, Skylark was the group that originally recorded "Wildflower" in 1972 & it was released on Captiol Records (#9 Pop). They were managed by Rochester NY-based radio personality Ferdinand J. Smith III (who was one of my mentors in the broadcasing biz). After "Wildflower" hit, groups from the O'Jays to New Birth cut versions of the song. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Hello Everyone. I would like to mention CARRIE LUCAS, of "Gotta Keep Dancing"/"Hello Stranger"/"Street Corner Symphony" fame. I used to buy her singles in the late '70s .. on the Solar and Soul Train labels. At the time I was convinced that she was white (or possibly latino), as in the photos I had seen of her she looked quite light skinned. And vocally, to me, she sounded "white". So you can imagine my surprise when a year or so back I bought an anthology C.D. of her Solar/Soul Train material and the booklet notes stated that she was the sister of legendary L.A. session musician GREG PHILLINGAINS!! Now I have Greg's "Significant Gains" L.P. and it has a picture of him on the front and he has very obvious black-African features!! It was at this time that I realised my mistake. Roger

Speaking of sounding like other ethnic groups, I noticed that most Causcasian singers don't squall like many Black singers, especially the old soul singers of yore. I can only remember a singer of Teena Marie's ilk squalling. Is it because in theory it's incorrect to strain ones vocal chords in that manner? Any input on this phenom? |

Now Lady Dyva, surely you're kidding with The Hesitations, right??? One of my uncles was the type of Black man who wasn't into the "screaming N----" type of music. This Black man damn near lost his mind when he heard the Gopspelizing of Born Free by The Hesitations. He was so used to the original movie theme by Roger Williams. Dyva, I've gotta tell you, when they got to the vamp & started singing "Born Free, Hallelujah, Hallelujah", he damn near had a heart attack. This man actually forbade his kids to play this song in his house. As an 8 year old, I thought that he was just kinda nuts. I guess that he felt that they were mocking the Lord, I don't know. Hello! "Brown-Eyed Pop"? C'mon. The answer is on the front page of today's papers -- and on all the television news and entertainment shows, too! Oh, Soulful Detroit Boarders, what's up with ya'all? Think "pop". We know the answer, it's so easy and obvious that even children know the answer to this gloved ONE: MICHAEL JAXSON -- "THE (Brown-Eyed) KING of POP"

Yes, MICHAEL JAX' idol and inspiratiion, Diva DIANA, more than qualifies. Likewise, THE SUPREMES. P.S. Allllrite, Bold -- but not Cold -- Soul Sister! By the way, your line above sounds like a new song: "You Just Keep Me Laughin' On". Whoooaoooh! Now, let's see, who might be great to do that song? Maybe their come back, reunion song? And, S.S., when Miss WAR-ick sang "That's What Friends Are For", it was not refering to the traditional "friends" -- it was the pay, pay, pay network of "friends". So sad. Oh, and that pruned Greek woman with the bleached blonde hair that was always in the t.v. ads with her. "This is my closest friend, DIONNE". Yeah, we see! Thank God the rip-off network was finally busted! What a damn shame undermining her own previously great musical career. D.W. knows that "A House Is Not A Home" and, if she forgot, she can buy the new "Joined Together" deluxe c.d. and hear DIANA! sing it -- backed up by THE SUPREMES and THE TEMPTATIONS. Alllllrite! P.S. I sent your regards to Spookie and told it to get back on the board -- or else! He's preoccupied with that little website of his. He hates when I call it "little", but it is! "Es muy pequeno." Oh, Dahling, Luv Chile.... ooops, I mean MISTER MAN LOVE CHILD. I've seen your posts here and there. I know U picked M.R.V. as favorite to see on "M-45", for example. Great choice! Just where are U calling home, dear? Personally, I believe in loyalty to one team. S.D.F. really is the most real and based on fact not fiction. Moreover, it is not stupid with postings like: FLO -- not DIANA -- should have been cast as BILLIE HOLIDAY in "Lady Sings The Blues". Or, TATA VEGA is the all-time best Motown artist. Or, "Buttered Popcorn" with Flo on lead was the best SUPREMES song (where's the vomit bag?). Or SCHERRIE, MARY and SUSAYE were better than DIANA, MARI and CINDY. If someone said CANDY & THE KISSES were, they'd have a better case. Anyway, that nightmare non-sense is not served at this table. So, I sorta/kinda/maybe missed U, too, except I've seen your posts so how could I miss U? Oh, and another quip: "GLADYS -- not Diana -- should have been cast as Dorothy in "The Wiz" (I assume they meant HORTON). Plus, S.D.F. is run really well by a very able and sensible staff -- not by a wannabe kindergarten teacher, that every time the building gets unique or colorful, she knocks down all the kiddies' building blocks. I build mine to last! I hope to see U here more and more. Oh, and, "Bless You". |

I think nobody mentioned Gene McDaniels yet. I remember being surprised that he wasn't white. I used to hate "A Hundred Pounds of Clay" back then but time has mellowed me, I love it now!!! Of all his early singles, the one I've always loved is "It's A Lonely Town"...so GREAT. After his string of pop hits ended, he was re-imaged as "The Right (or was it left?) Reverend Eugene McDaniels" and did not sound white anymore. Another very cool pop star was BILLY STORM! I don't think he sounded white on "This Is The Night" by his group The Valiants, but later on when he was on Columbia and recorded stuff like "I've Come Of Age"; love that one forever! How about those country/western "dudes", Charley Pride, Otis Williams, or Big Al Downing (who did the rockabilly classic "Down On The Farm")? Otis Williams was so refined that even when he was the lead of the R&B group the Charms, some of his records sounded like the white cover versions of black hits! To me, anyhow. (He did "Hearts of Stone, Ling Ting Tong, Two Hearts, Ivory Tower, etc.) |

Attention: DyvaNaye & NYC Diva If U two galz can choose your favorite "Brown-Eyed Pop" artists, then how come U both punked out on simply choosing: "What artist are U most looking to see on M-45"? I don't do U that way and write: "Oh, there's too many to choose from". Besides, my contest has only 16 choices and they are easy printed choices; yours has over 100 without any list anywhere. To wit, mine is much easier. I'd like U both to go back to the "Countdown to MOTOWN 45" file and make ONE choice each. That's part of the process of "choosing" and with actively participating. Thanx in advance. |

Yes, how could we have waited so long to list Gene McDaniels, the epitome of the pop sound. Also, it should be noted that both Bill Kenny and Tony Williams also sang songs soulfully. That is especially true for Williams with The Platters when they recorded for Federal. Bill Kenny and The Ink Spots also sang more soulfully on songs they recorded for a 39c budget label (I think it was Tops). |

Yo, Miss Diva Naye, I went there as in your invitation "I'll Take U There" and U know what? U weren't there -- both ways. Besides, U sit corrected. U previously went to the "Countdown to MOTOWN" (notice how it rhymes) but U asked about the J-Boyz. U know how U can ask someone a question and they answer with another question? No doubt U didn't intend to but U did! "U didn't have to thank me but U did" -- I mean, will. Anyone can go look and see that neither of our self-proclaimed divas voted yet for favorite M-45 artist. I've now also added a "Tips for the M-45 Show Evening" -- including supper party ideas. Check it out. I'll meet U there! P.S. Your quick retort line above to Juicey is funny, though I doubt he'll think so. By the way, however, why did U then repeat THE MILLS BROTHERS and THE PLATTERS that JF already mentioned as having been omitted?

Yet, his registering superceded mine on the main menu. I was trying to figue out where did my menu listing go? Yeah, Juice,-The Platters' first version of "Only You" was a great "greasy" Doo Wop record, which was sung very soulfully. That recording is what got Mercury to pick them up. Too bad they "polished" their style to go cross-market, and watered it down. Also, their "Tell The World" on Federal Records was similarly great. They also sang jump blues cuts like: "Voo Vee Ah Bee" and "Maggie Doesn't Work Here Any More", that might surprise you. Unfortunately, they only "let themselves go-naturally" on a few cuts for Mercury, like "Bark, Battle & Ball". |
