Hi Gang, Hope all is well with you, and yours. For me I guess I would have to name three. Firstly, it would be the Blue Note Live At The Roxy album. Some fine live recordings By Donald Byrd and Carmen McRae. Second, a live album that re-defined the production values of live albums in 1981. Live In New Orleans by Maze. Fabulous album. Must also give a mention to a jazz album called "Casino Lights". Featuring Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford and the Yellowjackets. Not an album that is a must have, except for the awesome "Theme From Love Is Not Enough" - David Sanborn. |

Hey, soulful folks! This is a subject previously discussed, but interesting, NYC Diva. Mine are: -"It's Your World" / Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson (Arista) -"Live In london" / O'Jays (PIR) -"Live!" / Blue Magic, Margie Joseph & Major Harris (WMOT) -"A Man & A Woman" / Isaac Hayes & Dionne Warwick (ABC) -"Live!" / O'Jays (Bell-MFP) -"Exposed" / Mike Oldfield -"Invitation" / Jacko Pastorius And one of the tracks recorded live that i likes a lot from my teens is a instrumental cover of The Stylistic's "People Make The World Go Round" included in the CTI All Stars, live, vol. 2 album, with a trumpet solo intro very memorable. Hello again, Hi Richard, I have that LP ("Casino Lights") re-edited on Cd with some bonus tracks. Totally agree with you says about this track by David sanborn ("Theme From Love Is Not Enough" and "Hideway"). But, IMHO, the best of this live album is by ex-Soul Survivor's Neil Larsen (with Buzz Feiten), especially "E Minor Song". Also i have another live Cd recorded at UK Ronnie Scott's with diverse latin jazz artists (including spanish sax player Perico Sambeat), and i fallin' in love with Arturo Sandoval's "Sambeando" (what a trumpet!!!!). Peace! |

NYC Diva: You should check out the reissue of the "Goin Back To Indiana" album on CD which also contains the "Maybe Tomorrow" LP. All the tracks have been remastered and the concert sounds as raw and funky as it did in 1971. And yes, the remastered "Commodores Live!" is indeed the bomb! Kevin Goins - KevGo |

I don't really like live performance recordings, when compared to studio "polished" recordings. But most, if not all of the live recordings that are even "listenable" to me are from the jazz genre. There are too many to name. As far as soul or R&B, I've liked almost none. I'd say "Temptations Live" would be my favourite non-jazz live album. I don't like "crowd noise". |

Stonewall's Favourite "LIVE!" Albums: Well, here's another first for the S.D.F. via Stonewall. I believe that if any of U every saw this absolutely incredible artist -- though it's impossible to believe that no one here has -- I would think that U would have mentioned this sensational "singer's singer" international artist.... #1 - SHIRLEY BASSEY: "Live at Carnegie Hall" (NY) {double album} including such outstanding belt-'em-out Shirley numbers as "Goldfinger", "Hey, Big Spender", "Diamonds Are Forever", "Something", "Moonraker" and the ultimate "This Is My Life (And I Don't Give A Damn For Lost Emotion)" -- U can have every blood, sweat and tear of my life! With "live" performances, "Shoilee" is the best! Even the Queen of England knows that. Do yourself a flavor, get SB's double "live" album. You'll be glad U did. #2 - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES: "Farewell Concert" {double album} (NV) #3 - MARVIN GAYE: "Live!" (MI) #4 - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES: "At The Copa" (NY) #5 - MICHAEL JAX & THE JACKSONS: "Victory Tour" #6 - DIANA ROSS: "LIVE!" (big close-up, performing face on cover) #7 - FRANK SINATRA: "Live at Madison Square Garden" (NY) #8 - BARBRA STREISAND: "Live In Central Park" (NY) - Includes signature songs such as "Don't Rain On My Parade", "People" and "My Man". #9 - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES: "Live at The Talk of the Town" (UK) 10 - THE TEMPTATIONS: "At The Copacabana" (NY) Big Special Bonus/A Different League: JUDY GARLAND: "Live at The Palace in New York" {double album} - The biggest selling "live" album in music history! Hello, Judy. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --------------------- Oh, The-Boy-Next-Door, with similiar, great musical tastes: There was no "doctor" (the type U mean) with THE SUPREMES at The Copa. Glad U stated it's your favorite in either case. U must recall that "other" old rumour, that Michael and LaToya Jackson were the same person? Now we know that's impossible -- he's taller. The DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES "Farewell" album was edited, mainly in the sense that there was even more material than would fit onto two albums! Motown 45 will also be "edited". Basically, everything "live" is; it has to be, for various reasons such as sound, usually space!

Boynextdoor: most "live" albums are edited to fit the format of an LP. It is common to overdub some instrumentation and vocals because of all the potential noise variables in the venue. There will be conflicts with having so many loudspeakers and open microphones on the stage. Controlling the noise would be one of the many challenges in producing a "live" album. In order to make a difficult recording listenable, some sweetening during the post-production process is almost required. Listen to Mary Wilson's performance of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" on the Farewell LP. What is featured it her studio overdub, but in the background you hear her actual stage performance as captured by the other mics in the venue. Same situation with DR's vocals on "At The Copa" tracks. You will hear two Dianas. The same with Marvin Gaye Live (1974). You will sometimes hear two Marvins simultaneously. Much of Junior Walker "Live!" (1970) also sounds overdubbed to me. Parts of this live recording are kind of distorted, so it would make sense to re-record a few elements. |

Lady M I thought it was you who requested that scan on the old forum when I couldn't... That LP is soooooooo rare even in Japan where I found it... I only saw it once and I had to break my piggy bank to own it today... I would gladly give you a tip on where to look for it, but frankly I have no idea... My best choice would be to put this reference in the search engine on Ebay on a permanent basis so that when one comes up, you will be notified... Sorry I can't do any better than this... It hasn't yet been reissued on CD (nor on LP)... And I don't know if it ever will considering that even back then this album was not issued anywhere else... weird! About the Shirley Bassey LP, look here on GEMM... there are copies for sale at only $6.00... http://db4.gemm.com/c/search.p l?sid=366757789&key=48256&curr ency=US&field=TITLE&wild=live+ at+carnegie+hall Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! |
