Here are some of my favorite "Blue-Eyed Soul" artists: TEENA MARIE - This woman has given us so many Soul classics that it's impossible to name them all. I hope her new album is a huge success and she gains a whole legion of new, young fans. BILLY VERA - He recorded some great duets with Judy Clay on Atlantic. My favorite is 'Country Girl - City Man'. BONNIE BRAMLETT - Bonnie had some good tunes with her husband Delaney and by herself including 'That's What My Man Is For' the original and best IMO recording of 'Groupie (Superstar) that she wrote, 'Crazy Bout My Baby' (with AWB) and an excellent remake of Jerry Butler's classic 'Never Gonna Give You Up' performed as a duet with Dobie Gray . She's also the only white Ikette that I know about. GAYLE McCORMIK (of Smith) - Gayle had some really soulful records with the group Smith. My favorites are her remakes of 'Baby It's You' and 'I Just Wanna Make Love To You'. She was also pretty hot! LOL. I'd like to find out what her early 70's solo albums sound like one of these days. SAMANTHA SANG - It's a shame that this very talented singer is only known for the song 'Emotion' (a great song that was ruined by Destiny's Child!) performed with the Bee Gees. She was an excellent singer and had so many other great songs. My favorites by her besides "Emotion' are 'You Made Me What I Am', 'I Can Still Remember', 'You Keep Me Dancing', her remake of The Moments' 'I Don't Wanna Go' and one of the best damn remakes of 'La La Means I Love You' that I've ever heard! I swear, if you didn't know any better while listening to her you'd think that it was The Emotions singing! BOBBY ELI - Bobby, I don't know if your eyes are blue but you've been involved in some of the finest Soul recordings ever put on wax! (Too many classics to choose from.) I couldn't post to this topic without giving you your props.

We've all sung the praises of Michael McDonald before, but I have to tell you all to watch out for the remix of I Heard It Through The Grapevine, from his motown cd. If you can imagine the vocals and just the strings from Grapevine, have now been laid over the top of an instrumental bit of Keni Burke's Hang Tight. It works very well, so watch out for it. Of couse it doesn't touch the original by Marvin, but is certainly causing a lot of interest right now. :-)) www.solarradio.com The Home Of Soul |

Mine are: Bobby Caldwell-What You Won't Do For Love (a lot of people I know still thinks this is a Black Guy singing this song). I also had the priviledge to meet Bobby. He's a kool guy! Dusty Springfield-You can't get anymore soulful than Dusty! If you don't believe me, pick up some of her Atlantic recordings...particularly Dusty in Memphis, with the Sweet Inspirations in the background. 'Nuff Said! Taylor Dayne, Melissa Manchester, & Bonnie Raitt. I agree with the others mentioned too. Handsome

Dang! Some of y'all already mentioned many of my favorite blue-eyed soul brothers & sisters. So, I'm gonna mention some others who make the list: LYDIA PENSE - The lead singer of San Francisco's Cold Blood has a voice that kicks major a--. Check out their album "Cold Blood - Thriller" or the CD "The Best Of Cold Blood". JOE BARRY - Swamp pop/r&b singer from New Orleans had a Top 30 hit in 1961 with "I'm A Fool To Care" and recorded some great soulful stuff throughout the 1960s & 1970s. JOE SOUTH - The man who wrote "Down In The Boondocks" for Billy Joe Royal sounded pretty soulful on his own hits "Games People Play" and "Walk A Mile In My Shoes". TONY JOE WHITE - "Polk-Salad Annie" sounded like it came from a Black man but noooo! Tony Joe had the goods as a singer and songwriter (he composed "Rainy Night In Georgia" for Brook Benton). ALEX CHILTON - The lead singer of the Box Tops and later Big Star sounded so mature & soulful even at age sixteen when he sang the Box Tops' #1 hit "The Letter" STEVE WINWOOD - His vocals graced the fueled-up rock & soul of the Spencer Davis Group as well as Traffic & Blind Faith. Steve's tune "My Love's Leavin'" from the Back In The High Life album is IMHO his best ballad ever. JOE COCKER - "The Letter", "With A Little Help From My Friends" and "You Are So Beautiful" - need we say more? LULU - Her hit "Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You, Baby)" shows her voice at its very best. THREE DOG NIGHT - Okay, I know I'm gonna get shot down for this but let's face it - Chuck Negron, Cory Wells & Danny Hutton cut some mighty fine tunes that carried more than a hint of soul (suggested listening - "Easy To Be Hard", "Eli's Coming") RUSTIX - Gotta give my hometown friends their props. Lead singer Chuck Brucato was in the same league as the Rascals' Felix Cavaliere and the Ingui Brothers from the Soul Survivors. The Rustix cut two albums for Motown's Rare Earth label ("Bedlam" and "Come On People") before disbanding in 1972. NOTE TO SOUL SISTER - Bill Medley's "Brown Eyed Woman" was a mighty fine record. Do you know who Bill was singing about? (Give you a clue - they both recorded for Phil Spector) Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Actually it was Cynthia Weil who wrote Brown Eyed Woman. She was very good friends with Bill Medley and Darlene Love and knew of their relationship. So, she wrote it as a biographical song, in tribute to both of them. If you'll listen to the song very carefully, Bill is really beggin' Darlene to please reconsider. This is when they actually looking at each other, while Bill is singing to her. You're very welcome, Soul Sister ! Anytime. Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |

Jester, David Lasley is truly one of best Blue-Eyed Soul singers. As lead singer of Detroit's own Utopias, with the group Rosie or any of his solo recordings, his Soul is pure. He is also one of the all time greats when it comes to background singers and songwriting does not get any better. Let's start with Anita Baker's "You Bring Me Joy" or his endles list of songwriting credits for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle(3 times), Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Dusty Springfield, Natalie Cole, Tina Turner, Jennifer Holliday, the list goes on and on. That man can sure nuff sing! |

Somebody knows more about Soul Survivors? Their Crimson, Atlantic and PIR discography I only have these tunes: -"Expressaway To Your Heart" (originally on Crimson). I have it in diverse compilations -"Mama Soul" (from the Atlantic album "Hits & Soul, vol. 7") -"What It Takes" / "Virgin Girl" (PIR-TSOP 45 rpm) -"City Of Brotherly Love" / "Last Time Was The Best Time" (PIR-TSOP 45 rpm) Also i knows that in the seventies changed the line up and featured jazz fussion keyboardist and songwriter Neil Larsen jointly with Richard and Charles (or Joseph?) Ingui. Thanks! Peace & Soul Food |

Maybe you are confusing them with FLAMING EMBER, who were on the same label? How about THE BOXTOPS .. I always thought that "The Letter" and "Cry Like a Baby" were very soulful. Roger |

Medusa: The purpose of this thread is to show how soul and R&B has influenced others outside of the African-American race, which has not diluted the music as much as it helped reinforce its strength and power across racial boundaries, bringing people of different ethnic backgrounds together (or those who choose to be part of the mix). To pick up on Doug's point, R&B music mixed with other genres has only made soul music even more powerful. For example, the Chi-lites' vocals on "Have You Seen Her" with those killer harmonies throughout the song came from two different genres that worked well together - street-corner doo wop & religious music. This was due to Eugene Record being influenced by both sacred church singing and street corner doo-wop. I hope this answers your question and quell any debate in this thread which everyone else seems to enjoy contributing to. Regards, Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Doug & Galactus: Ditto on Lighthouse's "One Fine Morning". Great vocals from group leader Skip Prokop. Also let's add to the mix "Vehicle" by the Ides Of March featuring lead singer/guitarist Jim Peterik. Chicago - the late Terry Kath was the man! I thought "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World" were by an R&B group because of Terry's soulful vocals. BTW - Jester mentioned the band the Mob, which was a Chicago-based band. Their leader Jim Holvay wrote the hits "Kind Of A Drag", "Don't You Care", "Hey Baby! Their Playing Our Song" and "Susan" for the Buckinghams (if only he kept one of these tunes for the Mob!). Check out the Mob's Colossus Records release "I Dig Everything About You" from 1971. It sounds like a tune the Spinners would've recorded! Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Blue eyed soul perhaps signifies, more than any other way, how much soul crosses boundries and how it can bring people of all races, colors and creeds together. That's what it's all about. That's why mixed groups like Santana, The Del Vikings, KC and the Sunshine Band, War, Rufus, Jay and the Techniques and others always warm my heart. It just demonstrates the strength and brotherhood of the music we know as soul. BTW......couldn't early Elvis even qualify for this category? |

Douglasm, Although I've been a listener of Soul Music for 50 years, I'd say it's watered down quite a bit over the years(Where were all the blue eyed soul crooners at that time, so,some of them weren't even allowed to listen to Colored Folks Music)?......I understand and appreciate your response...Thanx! |

Medusa: Elvis Presley was listening to Gospel music that eminated from a Black church in his hometown when he was a young boy - and that was back in the early 1940s. Jerry Lee Lewis used to sneak into Black clubs to learn how to play boogie-woogie piano during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Joe Barry - who I have worked with and contributed liner notes to his reissued work - attended his local Black church, sang in the choir and learned his craft from listening to Fats Domino, and this was in the early 1950s. These are just a few examples of where these "blue-eyed crooners" were and did not allow the racial mores of the times to prevent them from listening to music created by African Americans. And no - I am not picking on you. I'm just raising a point based on the question you asked. With respect, Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Medusa.... ....no problem. I figured your question was a serious one and deserved a serious answer. Flip is left to the eerrrggghhhh thread. Seriously, I wonder if a lot of the cross polinization (sp? Business major, not English) was due to the shape of pop music in the '60's. I mentioned on the Pop music thread the Keener 13 chart from when I graduated (6/66). 7 out of the 31 I would identify as "soul"--although it was all just music to me back then--along with the other music. And an arguement could be made that the Standells, Leaves and Shadows of Knight show "soulish" influences, not to mention Johnny Rivers and Dusty Springfield. Jan and Dean, on the other hand..... This has turned into an interesting conversation in its own right. doug |

4 give me, but some of those folks named as blue eyed soul singers, are not so... ..and Frank Sinatra was a good classical singer, but 'Soul'??? Nah A lot of the white folks that sang in a soul style, didn't have blue eyes, what about them? Actually, someone on this (old) forum said that Music has no color...then what's with the eye color thing? what does that have to do with soul music in the first place? I like of 'Soul Persuasion' much better. If you got it, you got it, if you don't, then you just don't have it, even if your eyes are green. When something has already been perfected, it tends to sway or influence others with the desire to be like itself (original), which is perfect, you can't slap a label on perfection...and douglasm, that's why I liked your explaination in your response...Galactus yours too.

Hi Medusa, In response to your query about "blue-eyed", I'll forward a snippet from a post to another forum that I'm a member of. It concerns Timi Yuro, who was a regular at "The Apollo": Timi told me, "whatever they do, don't classify me as 'blue-eyed soul' 'cause that's NOT me!" When Timi played the Apollo, most of the audience thought she was another light-skinned black girl soul singer. end of quote. And speaking about eye color, Smokey has beautiful *green* eyes, if I'm not totally mistaken.... My guess is that "blue-eyed" is just a code-word for "white", i.e. soulful white singers. Eva |

Medusa, Just to set the record straight, the term "blue eyed soul" is an all encompassing, catch all generic term not necessarily analogous to a person's eye pigment, but a commonly used term for a "white person" who for lack of a better term, sings with soul or a feeling usually associated with that of an African American person. The term "caucasian" is a grosly misused misnomer when used as a synonym for a "white person. The Caucasians were /are a people from the easternmost part of the former Soviet Union near the Mongolian border and for all intents and purposes, are more related to Asians than "white people" So when those who are misinformed call us "caucasian", they should get their facts straight before applying the term. |

Exactly Bobby... Very well explained... I was very much surprised the first time I heard the use of that term (caucasian) on the US TV a few years ago, and even more now that it seems it has passed on to define any white person even in the Police reports... Over here in Europe we have never used that word because as you said caucasians are people from a part of the ex-Soviet Union... Just as we don't use the term AFrican -europeans which could have been used in relation to the term used in the US... It's like 'Arian race' has never been a race of all blond haired, blue eyed people... instead the arians come from Iran... LOL Wonder B |

Hi Bobby! a good explanation. We here in Europe have these terms - doowop, shouter, 50s r&b, soul, deep, disco, Caucasian, blue-eyed etc. - which everybody interested in can understand and can focus on. I think these terms on the other side have dimmed a bit lately. Best regards Heikki |

The anthropologists used the term "Caucasian" for the so called "white race" originally, as the caucasian Region was thought to be their ancestral home. It was thought that that was the area where that so-called "race" was located when their skin and eye colour changed enough from the main body of the human population to consider them a different race. The scientists now know that trying to divide humans by skin and eye colour, hair straightness or other superficial traits is absurd, as those traits are not nearly as important to chromosmal inherited traits of different breeding populations as blood type and other inner body traits. Humans are very much more interrelated than was once thought. We are ALL descendents of one woman from only 80,000 years ago. The whole idea of separating people into races is pointless. Actually, many of the people in The Caucasus Region ARE much more closely related to most modern Europeans and north Americans (descended from Europeans) than they are to most other Asians. then, there are many other people from that area who ARE related much more closely to Central Asians and East Asians (and even some Indians). But, the people in that area are very mixed (as are most people around the World). I'm of Dutch/Flemish (Jewish) descent, but the family came from hungary before Belgium/Netherlands. I have a few first cousins on my father's side who have "oriental looking" almond-shaped eyes (eyefolds), and slightly yellowish skin and rounded faces. My Father's father looked similar. One might have thought they were Chinese or Mongolian. Those features must have come from mixing with The Hungarians during the 1600s to early 1800s, who, in turn (centuries before) had mixed with the conquering Huns, Avars, Patzinaks, Mongols and all other conquering tribes who came to the Hungarian Plain from East/Central Asia, through Central Asia. The Hungarians (Magyars) had come originally from Siberia in any case. But, knowing that we are all mixed, and race designations are inaccurate, how should we properly differentiate between the people raised in the so-called "Black Community" in USA from the so-called "Whites", or "Caucasians" when it comes to the question of soul music? It's more a cultural difference, rather than in the blood. |

Hi Robb_K! That was a fine analysis. It's interesting how our origins, the Finns, have been studied in many ways. The traditional explanation is that we originally come from the Volga region (a river in Russia), a tribe that came to the Hungarian plain as you mention, but recent studies show that we are actually a part of the Central European family. I really can't tell if this is true or not, but they claim we took this territory from the south-west. Anyway, I agree that the love for soul music is more cultural than "blood" thing. Best regards Heikki |

Ok, blue eyes, green eyes, hazel eyes, and the dominate brown eyes. I understand what you are trying to say...but,our (TRUE) Culture was destroyed from the root and we had to adapt to what was around us...and we made the best of it. I really mean no offense to no one here or anywhere else...but I do get offended, when some label is slapped on our styles causing us to be separated from that which we gave greatness to...and by some of our(so~called) own may I add. I rephrased and reasked your question on a different thread (to little response), but did get a lead from Eva on a book, "Just My Soul Responding: Rythmn And Blues, Black Consciousness And Race Relations" by Brian Ward out of the University Of California Press, that appears to reenforce a couple of my theories, and destroys a couple of others. Billy Eckstine has blue eyes. I guess he was a "blue-eyed soul artist" when he sang "Thank You Love" for Motown, and when he cut his Stax recordings. But, he went back to the "proper" field for a blue-eyed person, when he reverted back to singing "pop standards". |

Hello again soulful sisters & brothers! I wanna add the spanish group Los Canarios who recorded a tribute, "Requiem For A Soul" in memoriam to Otis Redding and many other soul tunes. Also spanish singer Bruno Lomas sang a cover of Four Top's "Reach Out". This was in the sixties but also in the present have a spanish "soul" group called Presuntos Implicados with a female lead voice very good. Some years ago recorded one album featuring Randy Crawford. I believe the birth of the expression "Blue Eyed Soul" was the music critics after Biddu published his "Blue Eyed Soul" Lp. They adopted it to refer to soul music made by white people. IMHO this is a convention like another of the language without more importance and without a literally signification. peace & Soul Food |

Hello again, soulful brothers & sisters! Hey, Heikki! (i write your name correctly for the first time, before i believe that was "Heikiki"!, excuse-me) The spanish critic of music Antonio De Miguel write this about the origin of "Blue Eyed Soul" expression in the "El Pas" papernews (i keeps the retail). But i beleieve that you have much more knowledge. I think nobody mentioned ERIC BURDON (!?) Also, Anastacia, Paul Hardcastle, Paul Young, and if Rodmann includes musicians and songwriters (as, of course BOBBY ELI!), the list its very long: Herbie Mann, Ringo Star, Vince Montana, Eddie Palmieri (he got some soul gems as "Spirit Of Love"!), the MG's white members,... Kevgo - I was just heard Terry Kath (of Chicago) singing on "Conversations 1 & 2" a couple of days ago. At the end of the song there is a long "We Can Make It Happen" chorus mixed with a few guitar solos. At the VERY end of the song someone (could be Terry Kath) does a great Larry Graham imitation worthy of a Sly record! Oh yeah...anyone ever listen to Murray Head? He was Judas on the orginal Jesus Christ Superstar. Because of my age at my first exposure to the movie (Carl Anderson as Judas), it never occured to me that the voice on the record was a white British dude until a couple of years ago. |
