I'm almost afraid to bring the Idol subject up after all the furor raised over Jennifer's ousting last week...and yes, we know Jennifer got a raw deal,...But for those of you that still like the show, or view it as a "train wreck", the six remaining contestants are singing "Latin" music tonight, with Gloria as a guest judge. (BTW, I understand Jennifer is now touring with Barry Manilow and she did get a contract. I don't know who signed her, but that's definitely a win-win situation). |

Unfortunately, I'll never get to see this show, as I have banned it from my TV set. I can imagine that Red will sing an extremely boring interpretation of Words Get In The Way. However, I could be persuaded to watch if I were assured that he'd be shaking his groove thing, while rocking out to Conga! |

Wow, touring with Barry Manilow. That is a great opportunity. |

jrlo, We all know the sunburned stringbean has to be doing "Girl from Ipanema", but we also all know that we would rather see him throw down the gauntlet with William Hung and do "She Bangs". Regards, Ken |

Ken, right on the mark! I figured him for "Ipanema" also when I was speaking to co-workers about 3 hours ago. That is, of course, unless they have to sing Gloria/Miami Sound Machine songs. Then I expect him to try something like Anything For You. But either way...... HE HAS TO GO THIS WEEK!! Jim |

Of course, the worst of the lot was John Stevens. I liked Simon's comment: John Stevens and Latin music goe together like chocolate ice cream and an onion! LOL! I thought Fantasia did a rather understated performance last night, considering the music, and I actually enjoyed her. Naturally, LaToya was wonderful. I voted for her something like 20 times. The surprise of the night was Diana. I think she really nailed "Turn the Beat Around", both in singing and in performance. Simon made some nasty crack about her dress. What that has to do with the price of eggs, I don't know, but it will be interesting to see how the votes go after last week's fiasco. I can't imagine John hanging in there for another round. |

I wasn't thrilled with last night's show. I think most of the performers made poor song choices. After their close call last week, I expected more from LaToya, Fantasia, and George. As it was, they all did okay, but none of them bowled me over. I acutally thought the best performances of the night were Jasmine and John. Both of them made good song choices, and performed well. |

I agree with Mike that Diana did the best job. I thought all of the others had problems with the Latin beat or whatever. I've discovered an interesting aspect. Sometimes I am in a different room and do not see the contestant but feel that the contestant is singing horribly. That makes me wonder if sometimes I am caught up in the clothes, the pretty face, the movements and all of these are factors in my determining whether I like the way they sing the song. |

Hello everyone. I wonder if Gregorian Chants count as "latin" music. If so here's a link that could prove inspirational to the remaining contestants :- http://www.informatik.uni-hamb urg.de/~zierke/steeleye.span/s ongs/gaudete.html As far as I'm aware this is the only song sung in Latin to have made the U.K. charts. LaToya was competent but pedestrian. I didn't hear George and Fantasia's actual performances, but the clips I heard weren't impressive. George needs experience; he's just too stiff and amateurish, and doesn't quite have control of his instrument. Fantasia has some pop and sizzle, but she comes off somewhat crude and crass. The little I heard wasn't her best. Where this show is really rigged is in the soft judging of the remainder of the contestants. John gets something of a pass because of his youth and the fact that a lot of people really do respect the genre of songs he tries to sing, regardless of the scoffing of the tin-eared public. But face it, this boy is as exciting as watching paint dry, and his intonation is getting worse throughout the competition. The other two, are really getting kid-glove treatment, especially that Hawaiian girl (Jasmine?). This girl should have been gone a long time ago, and might have been if the judges ever once subjected her to the scathing criticism her singing deserves. She can't carry a tune in a bucket. She sings the half and whole notes, where she doesn't have to move, reasonably in tune, and then sings practically everything else way out of tune. She has a decent voice but a bad ear, which I think is even more crucial than the quality of the voice. If the judges pointed it out, even the people who listen with their eyes and are partial to pearly teeth and a fresh-scrubbed Asian face would begin to defect. She stinks. The other girl is just very uneven and amateurish. Her tone thins out all the time and she gets out of tune too, plus she moves akwardly and is dowdy looking. She may not deserve the harsh criticism Jasmine (I suppose that's right) does, but she gets way too many flowery comments from the judges. Everybody else has had to face the vagaries of the judging full-on, but these three, espcially the two girls, have been let off easy. That, combined with some of the mechanics of voting, demographics and general bad tase of Americans has rigged this competition. Besides, it's ludicrous for these media whores to pretend that this was ever anything but a popularity contest. |

Along with everything that was said on the above writing,...I worry about what is considered an American 'singing' Idol these days. |
