I was lucky enough to meet Ed Wolfrum today and I was completely blown away by what he had to tell me. His collection of rare and unreleased Motown, Golden World, commercial jingles featuring the Funk Brothers conducted by Artie Fields, etc. was absolutely mindblowing! His stories of the inventions and the musicians associated with United Sound Studio in Detroit were priceless. How many on the S.D. forum knew that James Jamerson had some of his finer moments during commercials for Vernors or Plymouth. Mr. Wolfrum also completely shot down the idea that Carol Kaye played bass on any Detroit sessions...he should know; he was there! Mr. Wolfrum also played for me a demo that Diana Ross and the Supremes cut for Golden World pre-Motown. According to Ed..Ed Wingate of Golden World didnt feel it and canned the group and the song! What history |

The Supremes cut their first records for Motown in 1961 (Motown 1008, Tamla 54038). Was Golden World operating already in 1961? Or did they record for Ed Wingate before Golden World started its operations? I was under the impression that Golden World started its operations in 1962. Or could the Supremes have cut some recordings for Mr. Wingate AFTER they had already started (signed) with Motown? |

You make a good point Robb. Golden World studio did not exist in 1961. I'm not sure what Wingate was doing at this time. I know Ed Wolfrum and he does have a rich history in the Detroit music scene. This particular story needs some clarifying though. |

If I remember correctly, I remember someone telling me that Wingate financed the production of a few records before he started Golden World. In fact, that's why he was supposed to have founded GW. -(to derive the full profit potential of a production). Maybe The Primettes/Supreme recordings were financed by him as an independent in 1961, after Robert West, but before Supremes signed with Motown? |

This is a good topic. I heard it from a few sources that Wingate was doing some moving and some shaking behind the scenes, before Gordy came into the picture. I said this in a thread a long time ago, but alot of folks would always shoot down my idea's. Yeah, Gordy's input may have been out there first, hey, like I said a long time ago, the proof is in the puddin'. Now the truth has came to light. |

I forgot to mention, I heard the rummor that the Supremes did some sessions for Wingate, and it was said that Gordy was furious. If this may had occured then someone in the group had a big mouth. I even heard rummors that Martha and so did the Tempts did also, is it myth or legend concerning these recordings? |

Don, I sure don't have these answers but this can turn into a very thought provoking thread. |

I must emphasize that the latest version of the Golden World Story sits on this very website. 45 minutes of discussion with Ms JoAnne Bratton and a huge amount of research can be found by clicking on the SoulfulDetroit home page. Accept nothing less! |

David: Do you or Graham still keep in touch with Ms. Bratton? It would be nice to hear how she and Mr. Wingate are doing now. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Mr. Wolfrum played for me what he said was a pre-Motown Supreme's song...He is a very sharp man and can recite the players on almost every session in his vast library of music. The track sounded great and I am inclined to believe that he was not lying or mistaken. |

I had mentioned it awhile back ago and everybody thought I was lying and mistaken. Or better yet everyone was putting down my notions, as I meant to say in my earlier post yesterday. To me, it's not mind provoking, it's the truth. This isn't some sorta conspiracy that I know of besides other than just EW making records. |

I've known Ed for years. Believe me, I'm not questioning his integrity. It's just, time has a way of distorting things from the past. I'm a living testimony to that. |

That is a possibility, but it is also possible that it WAS a Wingate financed recording of the PRE-Motown Supremes in 1961, when Ed Wingate was financing a few records before he formed Golden World. Perhaps Mr. Wolfrum just "remembered" it as being Golden World, because Wingate was involved? |

I don't see how Gordy coulda been angry, because this happened before Hitsville was even a thought, in all due respect. SILLY LITTLE MAN. |
