Hi this is Kev-Lo you know when you really talk about soul music you have to think pretty much about the 60's because to me that was the peak of soul music. Many groups and solo acts made songs that you could really get into and had a strong and possitive meaning.Soul music from the 60's also had a great impact on what we did back then.Whatever we did the music reminded us of how time was back then and that's why when you listen to the music of the 60's now you can't help but to think back and remember all that great music you once knew and love so much. This is just a little something that reminds me about soul music of the 60's,But you SD's can give me your own input about this topic |

KevLo, I think that the 60s laid the groundwork for the 70s. In my opinion, the period from 1960-64 was a bit schizophrenic as regards Soul music. It wasn't quite Soul, not quite R&B & not Funk & what became known as Doo Wop was fading. To me, Black music was still finding itself. You had the MOR sounds of Johnny Mathis & Chuck Jackson, the Jazz of Jimmy Scott, Nat Cole & Dakota Staton. There was the Latin inflected sounds of The Drifters & the old styled R&B sounds of The Coasters. There was the Pop stylings of Jackie Wilson & Sam Cooke & even James Brown hadn't quite broken away from the 50s musical style. The Impressions were into those Brazilian rhythms & were still trying to find themselves. Solomon Burke & Ray Charles were bring Country Soul flavor. Otis & Aretha hadn't yet reached their peak. The Shirelles had the Popish Girl Group thing. Dionne had the Pop Diva thing happening. Even Motowns sound was still rooted in the Bluesy R&B sound of the 50s. In my opinion, Soul music didn't come of age until 1965. All of the previous musical permutations finally coalesced into what we called Soul music. The sound quality definitely improved as the technology got better. Soul music began to address more serious issues & became more assertive & defiant in tone, thus setting the stage for the 70s. I feel that overall, the 70s was musically superior to the 60s. For one thing, albums were no longer a bunch of previously released singles, padded with filler. Albums were more thematic & cohesive. As technology advanced, the sonic palette increased, giving us fuller sounds & a more enjoyable listening experience. Where the 60s found Otis & Aretha demanding Respect, the 70s found The Isleys "Fighting the powers that be". While most "Rock" critics put down the music of the 70s, they completely missed the boat. The sounds that came out of Motown, Philly Intl, Atlantic, Stax, Hi & so many others was of high quality. They had a very important message & was very meaningful & relevant to those times. The artists who were finding themselves in the 60s, finally came into their own. Groups like The Isleys, The Whispers, The Spinners, The Ohio Players, The Blue Notes, The Manhattans, The Chi-Lites, & The O'Jays came into their own. Singers, Writers & Producers such as Bobby Womack, Maurice White, Al Green & Issac Hayes exploded into our consciousness. Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye showed their true genius, not only as singers, but as writers & producers as well. Barry White finally came out of the shadows & became a love man extrodinaire. And James pushed the Funk envelope to an entirely different level. Groups & artists became more self-contained, producing, playing & writing more of their songs & albums. There are too many examples for me to mention. For what it's worth, I think that overall, the 70s had a slight edge over the 60s. Juice

Juice, I have to agree with you on the early 60's music. I did not actually get into music until around 1965, I was a young teen and it was all cool. In the 70's I was able to really appreciate the Sound of Philadelphia,Stax and Motown, because that was the music of my era. |

Ahhh, the 60's; my favorite decade of all for music!! Freddy Scott, Gene Chandler, Marvelettes, Mary Wells, the Shangri-las, Ronettes, Bobby Moore, Temptations, Sam & Dave, Betty Everett, Otis Redding and on & on. "Temptation's 'Bout To Get Me", "Check Yourself", "I'm Counting On You", "This Is My Prayer", "It's Love That Really Counts". The 70's started out OK, but I've always felt that funk & disco ruined soul music, with rap being its death knell. Even a lot of the "pop" music of the 60's was good, "Walk Away Renee", "Hello It's Me"(Nazz), "Over Under Sideways Down". The 80's are my second favorite decade, followed by the 50's. |

It reminds of wonderful times with my family, the Apollo Theater, Palisades Amusement Park, The Harlem Cultural Festival in old Mt Morris Park, Coney Island, those house parties, block parties, street games, etc....... I think the 60s was an experimental decade for soul music. Great lyrics, music, expression...I could go on! I especially loved the soulful love songs! |
