Hello, it's great to see you here. Your father & your uncles are very loved here. They made some beautiful songs & they just don't make songs like Check It Out anymore! My nickname is Juice, what is your name? It's very nice to see you here & I hope that you'll visit often. |

Ms. Tavares: Welcome to Soulful Detroit! The songs your father and uncles recorded are classics we all enjoy. I saw Tavares at a 1970s oldies concert in 1992 with the Village People & KC and the Sunshine Band at Brooklyn College. They tore the house down especially when they performed their hit "A Penny For Your Thoughts". Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Hey there btavares!!!! It is SO great to hear from someone who is close to your dad and your uncles!!! Since you have been reading the boards I know you must read how I really liked your dad back in the day!! (still do..my husband kids me about it all the time but it's all in fun) I met your dad a few times over the years and he was very polite and very sweet, very much a gentleman. You must be very proud of him! I do have a question..I read in your uncle chubby's book that you also sing. Will you be touring with Tavares or have any cd's coming out soon? Do you sing with any of your siblings? PLEASE give your dad my best! Take care and it's good hearing from you! |

Hi Daddy's Little Girl: I am so intrigued by your Cape Verdean culture that I'm starting to get into Cesaria Evora's music. I was on the island for a brief while so that the plane could re-fuel coming back to the states from Senegal. I was too through that we couldn't browse the island. Back in the late 60s I met a guy that I now realize was Cape Verdean. He was from Providence RI and his last name was Alves. I'm almost certain that he is of Cape Verdean heritage. Be blessed and know that Nosey loves her some Butch Tavares! |

Daddy's Little Girl: Your father and uncles made some timeless masterpieces and NY certainly had a place in their hearts for TAVARES. Please tell me, what is your family background, where exactly does the name Tavares originate from? Certainly a family full of very handsome men that made the women swoon. My favorite songs by your kin are: Never Had a Love Like this Before Remember What I Told You to Forget More Than A Woman (the Harmony was superb on this) Check It Out Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel Words and Music Also: who did your family look up to in music? Whom were their influences? Peace and God Bless - DyvaNaye |

Hello Daddys Little Girl, My favorite song by Tavares was and still is "Check It Out". That song is a Real Love song, without all the 'I Love You' Stuff...but if you read between the lines, it's saying a whole lot more. ..."CHECK IT OUT' |

Ms. Tavares, Before your father Butch Tavares and uncle's became Tavares didn't they call themselfs The Turnpikes and released a single titled "Cast a Spell" on Capitol Records. Also didn't they have another group that went by the name of The Tokays, that had a single on Brute Records titled "Baby Baby Baby"? |

DyvaNaye: I was trying to wait for DLG to answer your question about their background. I hope I am not being presumptious by divulging what little I know. The Tavares family are of Afro-Portugese ancestry. Their ancestors come from the Island of Cape Verde which is off the coast of West Africa. When the Portugese and Dutch instituted the Atlantic Slave Trade they used the island as their outpost. They converted the natives to Catholocism and did their dastardly deed to the helpless Africans on the continent. Around the turn of the century or so, Cape Verdeans migrated to the New England area because they were great fishermen and went where they could find work hence they have quite a large Cape Verdean population, specifically in New Bedford, MA, Rhode Island, etc. They have for the most part retained their Cape Verdean culture. They are to some degree bilingual (speaking portugese) and have Portugese last names. I have seen the last name Tavares spelled Tavarez as well. Hopefully, DLG will expound on what I just "typed". I am quite fascinated by the culture of my fellow Africans in the Diaspora be they Afro-Mexicans, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Dutch, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Portugese, etc. I can't wait to see what DLG has to say. |
