The School House Rock thread started me to thinking about one of my favorite past times 'CARTOONS'... SDF, what were your favorites? What lines in the cartoons inspired you the most? Cracked you up? and which one(s) do you consider the best cartoon production? Mine with out a doubt are: Hanna Barbera - 'The Flintstones' Warner Brothers - 'Looney Tunes' shouting out Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig , Fog Horn Leg Horn, Sylvester the Cat, Gossimer (the monster), Wylie Coyote...'Super-Genius'...lol. ... Go ahead SDF...shout 'em out...dont be 'shame'...lol.... |

Hanna-Barbera's Tom & Jerry productions for MGM Pictures are classics. Same with Warner's Looney Tunes. Popeye the Sailor Man (Paramount Pictures) with Bluto was cool. Woody Woodpecker - great laugh!!! Filmation Studios had some decent cartoon versions of popular sitcom shows (or variations thereof). "The Brady Kids" and "The New Adventures of Gilligan's Island" come to mind. "Super Friends" - gotta love 'em! "Spider-Man" - decent cartoon, snazzy theme song! Can't forget "Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids"!!! Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Hey Folks! How about the Jackson 5 cartoon series (1971-73) that was followed six months later by the Osmonds' cartoon show (1972-74). Both ran on ABC-TV (Channel 7 in many major cities) Saturday mornings 8am-9am (Jackson 5 from 8:00-8:30am, Osmonds 8:30am-9:00am). Kevin Goins - KevGo |

The whole Jackson Family look like the cartoons they set out to be back in the 70's, however MJ is assuming the role of 'Edward Scissorhands' or 'Powder' who runs a close second...and Latoya comes close to Morticia in the Adams family cartoon, Janet looks like Rosie the Rivetor now...femininity is all gone from her... I digress...Im just kinda through and heart broken about my favorite former first family.:-( |

I gotta give it up to my main man Yogi Bear. Always gankin' Mr. Ranger out of pic-a-nic baskets, always scheming his way out of trouble. Never did figure out what was up with Yogi and Boo-Boo though. I mean they DID sleep in the same bed...what was up with that? My other favorites are Rocky and Bullwinkle, Popeye, Tennessee Tuxedo, Top Cat, The Flintstones, The Simpsons, The Critic, King of the Hill, and The Family Guy. Anybody remember Clutch Cargo and Paddlefoot? Hardly any animation at all - the character's lips were the only thing that moved. Finally, I used to love watching "Rude Dog" cartoons on Sarurday mornings with my daughter when she was little. As I recall, the show only ran for 1 season - had to be in the late 80's. Rude Dog's tag line was "Fix yourself up, pal". |

CHANCELLOR!!!! Brother, I'm with you! Who could ever forget Dee Dee Sharp & Makin' With The Magilla? What about Hercules & The Marvel Super Heroes: "When Captain America Throws His Mighty Shield"? Wacky Racers with Penelope Pitstop, Dick Dastardly, Mutley & The Ant Hill Mob. Then there was Space Ghost, Linus The Lion Hearted, The Beatles, The Three Stooges, Batfink, & The Impossibles. Yes, there was a Bottle Man, well actally, he was Diaper Man. . If I remember correctly, the show was The Mighty Heroes. They were Diaper Man, Kuku Man, Tornado Man, Strong Man & Rope Man. I was about 6 when this came out, so we're talking about maybe 1966. I remember that Diaper Man had a gravelly voice like Froggy of The Little Rascals. Here's a link: http://www.toonopedia.com/migh ty_h.htm I would sure love to see that show again. Here's a link with a clearer picture: http://members.fortunecity.com /infinitecool/cartoon/cartoon3 .htm Those were the days!!! Juice

What an enjoyable thread; it's gratifying to know that there are many like myself who have never outgrown cartoons. I was raised on Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera and Tom & Jerry. Early favorites that I haven't see in years were Huckleberry Hound, Ruff & Ready, Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle. There was another...Koko the Clown. I remember the theme song, "Out of the inkwell comes Koko the Clown..." As I grew older, I stopped watching the Hanna-Barbera and Tom & Jerry stuff. My favorites to this day are the Warner Brothers work of Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Frank Tashlin and I. Freeling. The early Bugs and Daffy cartoons by Tex Avery that set the template for their personalities. Then, around 1940, when Avery moved to MGM, I loved his Droopy series and anything he did. In fact, of all cartoonists, I would rank Tex Avery as the first true Master in the late 30s through the 40s and Chuck Jones who, in the 50s, took the Warners cartoons to their aesthetic pinnacle. "Duck Amok", "Some Froggy Evening", man, you just can't beat 'em. I would say that Tex Avery and Chuck Jones are rightfully due consideration as two of the premier humorists of the last century. Props to Max Fleischer too. Those color Superman shorts are amazing looking to this day. The black and white Popeye cartoons beat the later color ones, IMO, although they're not shabby. Today, I suppose it's no surprize that I love some classic Japanese anime, like Akira and Princess Mononoke. On the tube recently I've really enjoyed the Batman and Justice League series. |

John Dixon, you have taste similar to mine in liking Tex Avery, Max Fleischer, Warner Bros. , Heckle and Jeckle, and the like. I grew up on Disney cartoons of the '30s and '40s, and Warner Bros, MGM , Fleischer , Columbia, and the rest from the '30s and '40s. That really fluid animation is why I got into cartooning. nobody mentioned the Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Silly Symphonies cartoons that were also so good. maybe my taste is too corny. |

And Robb, I saw on the Geographical thread that you did some work on "The Iron Giant". I LOVED that movie! What a great story...What was your involvement, may I ask? And have you noticed how, on today's superhero animated series, so many characters look like something Jack Kirby would have drawn? Whenever I see some character looking Kirby-esque, I break out in this huge grin 'cause I'm sho nuff hip to that reference! Truly he was the greatest. What Chuck Jones was to Warner Brothers, Jack Kirby was to Marvel, agree? |

Soulboy....big Wacky Races fan when I was a kid. Dastardly and muttley (remember the laugh ?) Penelope pitstop, the over-the-hill gang, the hillbillies. That was a very sophisticated cartoon for its day. I catch it on Nickelodean once in a while, and I'm still amazed at some of the race plots |

A couple of years ago, the British government set up a panel to research into the state of Children's Television with the proliferation of all the new satellite and cable channels. They eventually reported that there was not enough that was "educational" on offer. (Of course, anything labelled "educational" is an instant turn-off to most kids!) One channel was singled out for showing "too many cartoons" and criticised for its limited content.... You'd have thought that the name "Cartoon Network" might have given them a slight clue, wouldn't you? ;) |

John Dixon: Jack "King" Kirby practically defined comic book illustration through his work at Marvel Comics, especially with the Fantastic Four & Captain America series. John Romita Sr. and his son John Jr. did great work with the Spider Man series (which I preferred over Artie Simek's earlier illustrations). Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Kevin - do you remember Neal Adams as a Marvel artist? He drew the X-Men before the mag was pulled in the early 70s. And another legendary name... Steve Ditko - very stylised drawings, which worked well in black and white (the way Marvel strips were reprinted over here.) He was great on bodies, (his Hulk had serious muscles!) but his faces tended to look very similar... |

"Some Froggy Evening"!!! You've done it again, John Dixon (Ritchie who???). Seriously, keep an eye on the summer music festival circuit. For the past few years something called the Warner Bros. Symhony Orchestra has been traveling around. They show clips from the WB toons featuring all the great classical music bits while they play them. "Kill the Wabbitt" alone is worth the price of admission. They also do a separate tour of "Bugs on Broadway" featuring stuff like "We are the boys in the chorus ..." and "hello my honey ..." (from "Some Froggy Evening"). If you're a WB fan, definitely catch these. I must also mention two of my greatest musical inluences: 1) The forgotten genius of the guitar, El Kabong. 2) The "King of the Crooners" himself, Alfalfa, who made it impossible for me to ever listen to any version of "I'm in the Mood for Love", "I'm Through With Love" or "The Man on the Flying Trapeze" with a straight face. Dyva, Dyva, Dyva...Dear Dyva, so deep into denial. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk! Sorry m'love, but I used to watch this show religiously. It started out on its own, then was bundled with other shows. If memory serves me correctly, they were infants that it a crisis would morph into grown Super Heroes. There's someone who sells or trades these on DVD. I would like, if i may.... .....to speak up for a series of toons that most people have forgotten about, those produced by UPA, and specifically, Gerald McBoing-Boing. It's a chicken/egg thing as to Ward Kimball or the UPA guys and who was first, but it's limited animation at its most creative. And while I'm at it, Tom Terrific is a favorite of mine, too. John D: I was not involved in the actual production of what got onto the screen on "Iron Giant". I worked in the Development Department. We worked on conceptual drawings for the proposed styles for characters and backgrounds. I worked on different architectural styles. I spent most of my tome gathering stock photos and photocopying magazine photos. I did draw a few concept drawings. I wasn't on that project very long. While with Development, I worked mostly on a proposed animated feature about the re-introducing of wolves into Yellowstone National Park (a pet project of Ted Turner-who had been our boss before our Turner Feature Animation had merged with WB Feature Animation. I worked on animal conceptual scenes for that. I worked as a digital painter on "The Pagemaster", and as an apprentice in the Layout Dept. on "Cats Don't Dance", and a little bit on "The Quest For Camelot". Although WB told us we all would have jobs after the merger, many of us "Turner Featurites" were laid off within a year after our last Turner film ("Cats Don't Dance")was over. They really only wanted our top animators and cream of the crop in each department.

John D: I forgot to answer the Jack Kirby question. I was a big comic book fan, as we had no TV in the '40s, and there was precious little of worth to watch in the early '50s. I was a big Disney fan, and liked all the "funny animals (WB, MGM, Walter Lantz), but I never cared about the superheroes. I've seen a few "Superman" and "Batman" in the late '40s, and read a few E.C. comics. I've NEVER even looked at a Marvel comic, so I can't say anything about Jack Kirby's work in them. However, I have seen Jack Kirby's work in E.C. comics (mostly combat stories). He was a great artist. Personally, I don't care about realistic comics or cartoons, so I can't really comment on them. I can appreciate how well he drew, as we have to draw human figures in poses and motion-quick sketches, very much, to draw cartoon characters. We have to know the human and animal bone structure and musculature, and physiology down to a tee, to draw figures well enough to have a decent portfolio, to even be able to take inbetweening, storyboarding or layout tests to get hired by a studio. So I can appreciate how well he knew the human figure. I have to confess that I haven't seen ANY of today's superhero animated series. I never even saw any of Filmation's work (even though one of my partners on a limited animation Brazilian Folk Tales for children DVD series was a storyborder with that studio for 8 years). Although, I DID work as a digital painter on the cartoon version of "Mortal Kombat". I wasn't too impressed with that, although the figures were reasonably well drawn. I never liked the Hanna Barbera cartoons of the '50s and '60s because the limited animation was so static. Although so many people say the humour in them made up for the poor quality animation, I never thought they were funny. Despite all that, I couldn't help but be exposed to their different cartoons, as they were so omnipresent. So, I DID hear of Magilla Gorilla (although never watching that show). The interest for me (since reading this thread)is that I had bought "Makin' With The Magilla" by Little Eva on Dimension 1035. I never connected that song with the TV show until seeing this thread. I always wondered why Little Eva sang a song with a Hebrew word in the title. She wasn't a Jewish singer from "The Borscht Belt". Was that the theme song of the TV show? Also, I saw on this thread a reference to Dee Dee Sharp having sung that song for the TV show. Is that true? If so, was it pressed on a vinyl release? She was still with Cameo at that time. I don't remember seeing a vinyl version of that song by her among the millions of records I've looked through. Just a side note: SD's own Mike McLean worked at Hanna-Barbera/The Cartoon Network during the period I was at Turner Feature Animation/WB Feature Animation. Needless to say he was involved in the sound recording for cartoons and feature films. |

Another comment on "Making With The Gorilla". It was written by Tony Powers, Jerry Keller and Ed Justin for Screen Gems/Columbia Music. They were the music publisher for Columbia Pictures. I think Columbia Pictures TV had some distribution deal with Hanna Barbera (is that correct?). In any case, they wrote themes for many TV shows. Our own Airwave artist, Delia Renee (McGhee) was one of the McGhee Sisters whosang "The Shebang Song"-for The "Shebang" TV Dance show from the mid '60s. Colpix and Dimension were the record labels which released Screen Gems/Columbia songs. Little Eva was one of their artists, so I have reason to think that her version was the original (and that it was also the one that aired on the TV show). Is that an incorrect assumption? Had I ever watched the show, I would know, as Dee Dee's and Little Eva's voices are quite different, and therefore, easily distinguished. (Message edited by Robb_K on April 22, 2004) |

Krazy Kat & Ignatz. I know that it's not PC but it was funny when Ignatz used to brain her with the brick. **********, Oh...little angelllll. That was funny! I can't believe no one has mentioned Deputy Dawg. Remember him anyone? There was muskie(the muskrat) and vincent (van gopher) and a raccoon (i forget his name. Deputy Dawg talked real funny, as if he had had a stroke. Favorites: Beatles(remember how they would show the words to the songs? Flintstones- One of the funniest episodes was when Dino was in love with Sassy?(Lassie) Sassy was a big-time(dinosauer) star and Fred took Dino down to see Sassy, and Dino walked up on her taking off her blonde wig and fake eyelashes?!! Dino was traumatized and began screaming hysterically! Fat Albert -big time favorite PowerPuff Girls Kimba (loved the theme song) Auggie Doggie ("That's my boy") Huckleberry Hound (the man of 1000 faces, and he could only make one) Anyone remember Lipee the Lion and Hardy Har-Har?(I'm laughing as I write that!) There was a cartoon version of Abbott & Costello, anyone remember? I really dug The Banana Splits and all those cartoons on there..especially The Hillbilly Bears! Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck Oh I could name 1000 more cartoons...I was a tv junkie as a kid!! |

All of you really outdone yourselves with all of the old skool classic cartoons! Especially those cartoons where the characters got hit, ran over and blown up by everything imaginable! Almost everyone mentioned, I've seen, some a thousand times. But do ya'll remember on weekday afternoons around 4-5:30pm back in the '80s (from 1984-1986 to be exact), when "G.I. Joe", "Thundercats", "He-Man & The Masters of the Universe" and my favorite "Transformers" used to come on? Man, I would hurry up from school and finish my homework quick to see those cartoons on! But let me ask you this question folks: Do you remember when some of the MGM and Warner Bros. cartoons to name a few, were downright racist? One good example: when the Cartoon Network debuted back in the mid-90s, they showed a cartoon from back in the day where a magician was trying to get a opera singer (in which the caracters as you know were dogs) to let him in on the show to showcase his magic tricks, the singer said no and kicked him outside, when the magician had a devious idea to get revenge. As the show started, the magician crept up on the conductor and put a spell on him to freeze him solid and stole his clothes (the cartoon sounds familiar doesn't it?) To cut to the chase, the magician in disguise goes on to ruin the singer's performance by changing him into various characters, such as a Hawaiian hula dancer, a chinese performer, and a little boy singing "A tisket-a tasket-I lost my yellow basket" while the balloon blew up in his face. But the one the got my attention when the man up in the balcony, who was by now pissed off with the singer's awful performance, took out an ink pen, and squirted the black ink in his face, lo and behold, a blackfaced singer singing some slow song. I have that cartoon on tape, but they have since showed it with those particular parts edited out. So, what they saying is for all of these years they showed this particular cartoon in its original version, but saw the error in their ways, and now is showing it in a edited version? Is political correctness in play here or what? HOLLA BACK |

Many times bigdaddyg2k4. Bugs Bunny used alsways have the minstrels on back in the 30's,'40s,'50s. I guess you can say that at least society doesn't allow that stuff anymore (I know, I know, it still exists but at least it's not as blatant as it used to be.) It seems that the one thing this younger generation has is, for the most part, it's acceptance of people. Racism is just not tolerated. |

I am enjoying this thread late. These are some great cartoons. I love the old and the new cartoons. I had seen The Mighty Heroes in the late 1980s among a series of other Ralph Bakshi cartoons (The New Mighty Mouse) on Saturday mornings. But I didn't know the characters were revived from the 1960s. Yes, Diaper man was one of the characters (LOL). In the late1980s I remember a lot of those Ralph Bakshi cartoons (including an adult feature cartoon) contained some suggestive situations. Robb K, you and I are in agreement. Some of those Hanna-Barbera toons of the 60s & 70s were so cookie-cutter. As a kid I could tell the animators were cutting corners left & right. Only the mouth would move!!! The Flintstones, though, was one I really enjoyed. It was the first prime time cartoon sit-com, wasn't it? Like Robb_K, I can't really get into real-life-looking characters like the Superfriends or Batman. However, has anyone seen the new one on WB Kids Network called "Static Shock" on weekdays? With its ethnically diverse cast, a high school teenager uses his newfound power to fight crime. I saw the first episodes recently and liked it. |

I love the old Warner toons, too. But I like "Proud Family" on Disney and many Nick shows. For some reason, I used to like watching "Pepper Ann" in the late 1990s. And thank goodness for The Cartoon Network! They have late night shows geared toward adult humor like "The Oblongs" and "The Critic." Remember "Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home"? It was a prime time cartoon sit-com in the 70s. |

For all of you who chose Kimba & Casper, I must say that you are all very kind, compassionate & wonderful people. And then there's Juice. I absolutely hated both of these shows, hated them. Let me explain why. First, let's talk about Kimba. Kimba was an orphaned lion who walked the jungle, trying to find friends. He was a rebel, a loner, searcvhing for love, acceptance & a home. Every day, Kimba would get his butt handed to him as they ran his butt away every show. As I got older, I understood the message of the show. As a kid, all I knew is that he got his ass kicked daily between the hours of 3-4:30 P.M. EVERY DAY PEOPLE!!!!! They should have billed the show as: "Come see Kimba's latest a-- whippin' today & every day from 3-3:30. We're whippin' his a-- just for you". And that's all I knowed about Kimba. On my block, Kimba was considered a punk. Hey, that's how 9 year-olds think, he was kind of SOFFFFFT! Kind of SWEEEET! We laughed at that, tough neighborhood, huh? Then there's the case of Casper....The Friendly Ghost (written with voice dripping sarcasm). Casper, Casper, Casper....umm, mm, umm. Let me ruminate & expound on Casper. First of all, I have a problem with the fact that I don't know if he/she was a boy or a girl. Did you ever know a kid named Casper???? Were they a boy or a girl? I never quite figured out what Casper was. Seriously, think about it. First of all, he/she was transparent. Secondly, he/she had the squeakiest voice this side of a rusty door hinge. he/she had that annoying whiney voice & he/she sounded like a punk.....waaaaa, waaaaaa, boo hoo. Casper drove me nuts with all of that wimpy cry baby crap. Ye Gods man, pull yourself together!! Act like you have some cojones already!!! The last line leads me to my final problem with Casper..........NO GENITALIA!!!! I mean, what the hell is Casper, a girl, a guy, a pre-op transexual, what??? I mean when you think about it, Casper had the whole androgenous thing working & some of us kids were confused. They could have had the decency to put a skirt or some pants on this kid. I also had a problem with Caspers obvious self esteem issues. Now as I analyze it, I can understand why Casper was always down in the dumps: people ran away from him/her, squeaky whiney voice, being transparent, no genitalia, I can see why a ghost might have a few issues. But still....all of that whining & acting wimpy....sheesh, we thought that Casper too was a bit of a PUNNNNNK, kind of SOFFFFFFT! Tough neighborhood, huh?? Anyway, Caasper spend every episode with people making fun of him/her, running away from him/her & being dissed 2,000 times each episode. Then, a crisis would arise: baby stroller rolling into a busy intersection, baby caught in a burning house, a kitty stuck in a tree, etc. Casper, who should've been really pissed off at the way these folks treated him/her, swoops down & saves the day. After which, the town folks give him/her a parade, carrying him/her off into the sunset on their craggy shoulders, thereby proving 2 things: 1. With just a little understanding, ghosts & mankind can peacefully co-exist. 2. Ghosts are people too, they just happen to be dead. Err, ahh, yeah....sure! I don't think that I liked ghosts or dead people as a child. I don't know why they chose to use a ghost to get their point across. Again, I digress. I had a problem with Caspers punky, wimpy, low self esteem image. Just once, I wanted to see Casper tell these folks where it was at. Just once, I wanted to see Casper give all of those mean folks a ghostly kick you know where, or at least the finger. If I had written Casper, it would have been a whole different episode, believe that. In fact, here's a sample episode, titled: If Juice Had Written Casper" IF JUICE HAD WRITTEN CASPER (COPYRIGHT 2004) Now, it this case Casper is a boy. He's been dissed throughout the whole episode, people laughing at him, kicking him in the butt, the whole nine. Suddenly, there's a kitty stuck in a tree. As this is the most tragic thing that's ever happened in that neighborhood, they're not equipped to handle such a calamity. A town's lonely eyes turn to the only one who can help save the kitty. They turn their eyes to they one they'd scorned..........this is a job for Casper, The Friendly Ghost. Casper, who'd been walking with his head down, as he'd done thousands of times before, hears a scream. As he looks at the scene & hears the screams for help, he begins to think. As he thinks, he remembers that they'd dissed him 2,000 times that episode. He remembers how they discriminated aginst him, Casper, who was a friendly ghost. They ran him away & ran away from him, now they need his help.......HYPOCRITES!! Then there were those animators & writers, yes those people, who created him with a squeaky voice & no genitalia to speak of. Yes rage consumes him as he recalls all of these things. Then suddenly, as he approaches the crowd, an eerie peace comes over him & the hint of a smile creases the corners of his mouth. Suddenly, he stands straight & erect. What's that, what could it be??? Yes, Casper's finally found his COJONES!!!! AND IT FELT GOOD TO FINALLY FIND HIS COJONES!!! What will our hero do, what will he say??? Let's find out. The dialog would go something like this: So, your kitty's stuck up a tree huh? Damn, that's a tough break. You need me to do what??? But wait a minute, didn't y'all laugh & make fun of me 2,000 times in the last 20 minutes? Oh, you were just kidding. Mrs Westlake, didn't you run away from me just yesterday? Don't lie you old hag; your eyes popped out, your shoes fell off & your wig flew off, didn't it? DIDN"T IT?? Yeah, I thought so. Now, I don't want your damn cookies & milk either. Those shit's are lousy anyway, that's why your husband's with the lady in the bakery when you think he's bowling. You better recognize! So little Tommy, that's your cat right? Little punk a-- Tommy. Didn't you call me a punk a-- ghost just 5 minutes ago? Not only that, you kicked me in my a--, remember that?? I should of beat your punk a-- 5 minutes ago, but, you were with your gang. Now your kitty's up in the tree & you're crying like a little b----. Who's the punk now, who's the punk now? Oh, now you wanna be my friend? Oh you wanna play now? Did yo tell your mama how you play with your sisters dolls & her makeup when she goes to the store?? Did you tell your mama that you're more Tammy than Tommy, did you?? Yeah, I see you in the room, think I don't know about you. Did you tell your mama, sissy boy?? Anyway, since y'all didn't wanna play with me, I learned to play with myself. It was kind of lonely at first, but now, guess what, I really like playing with myself. Did y'all teach that kitty how to fly? Shame about that, y'all should have planned ahead. Maybe Muffin can flap her paws or something. Umm mmm, it sure is a long way down from that tree. Besides, don't cats have 9 lives?? The way I see it, little Muffin has 8 more to work with, so what's the problem? Sheeet, I'm dead, I'm a ghost, that damn kitty's got 8 more chances than I do. Wait a minute! OH HELL NO, HELL NO!!! Tommy didn't Mrs Westlake give you that kitty? I THOUGHT I RECOGNIZED THAT CAT, I KNEW IT!!! I tripped over that damn cat, fell down a flight of stairs & broke my neck. I wouldn't be dead if it wasn't for that damn cat. Sheeet, y'all can kiss that kitty's a-- goodbye right now!!! Casper walks off with a smile, satisfied that he's put those a--holes in their place. He also walks off with one more thing......Mrs Westlakes phone number. The moral of the story???? Never underestimate the power of cojones!!! THE END!! That's how I would have written Casper, although I must admit that he's got some anger issues to work through. Somehow, this ending leaves me much more satisfied. And now, a cigarette! I feel drained. (Message edited by Juicefree20 on April 26, 2004) |

Juice!!!!! You never fail to keep me rolling on the floor with laughter!!!!! GOOD ONE! For the sake of arguement, Casper was a boy...Wendy the witch was his girlfriend and spooky (I beg you're pardon....who are you callin a spook!) was his friend...Nightmare was his friend the horse. The episode that got me was Casper had a friend..his only friend...a puppy...they went everywhere together..they played together..then oh my...the poor puppy got hit by a car...next scene is Casper crying over his dead puppy...this was a kid's cartoon??? Hapiness is again realized when the puppy's "ghost" rises from his grave! Casper and his ghost puppy go dancing off into the sunset.....Someone gave me this episode years ago when my oldest daughter was 7...I donated it to goodwill! That's messed up!! Oh remember the other wimp...Baby Huey??? The overgrown goofy duck in diapers???? Talk about whiney!!! |

jrlo, your kindness flatters me immensely. What I never understood is this: why in the world did the writers choose to create a character type that scared the hell out of children, to be a cartoon in the first place? I know that as kids, most of us were deathly afraid of ghosts. What were they thinking of? This was some morbid stuff here. Were they trying to tell kids that it was ok to die, become a ghost, get dissed, have their feelings hurt, because it would all work out in the end???? I'd love to know their thinking on that one. |

You're welcome Juice!!! Casper I think was written in the 40's or early 50's...who knows what they were thinking! (They are probaly ALL dead now...how ironic!) Me...personally..if I saw a gh..gh...gh..ghost...(that's how they did it in the cartoon before they ran a way!) I wouldn't stick around either to make friends with it!!! Maybe we adults are too analytical...when I was little I never really thought about it much. I just thought Casper was too sad and whiney. "Nobody wants to be my friend"!! ahhh excuse me...you're... uh....DEAD???????? **I see dead people....or dead little white people that are not anatomically correct! Yup...that's my buddy Casper!

jrlo, suddenly, the irony occurs to me. Perhaps they're working on a sequel. Do you think that Casper's pulled out a can of whup a-- on them. I can see it now, the possibilities are endless. Writing a stupid cartoon - $60K Selling cartoon rights - $200K Cartoon character exacting revenge on writers - PRICELESS!!! |

Hi again, soulful brothers and sisters! This site is very multifaceted and here speaks about all the themes of my personal interest appart from soul music: sometimes is the comics, the art works of the sleeves and now the cartoons! As a good memories of my childhood i remember "Flix el gato (el nico-el nico gato!)" (the only cat!); also i think "The Mighty Mouse" is the same in Spain appears as "Sper Ratn" (it's from Terry Tooms, ?). Also from the most remote memories of the childhood remember "El Seor Rossi" (italian production); "El topo Giggio" (also italian); "El Inspector" and "La Pantera Rosa" (the Pink Panter) and a very fool and funny serie I forget the name with a dog called "Patan el Magnfico" (is a dog who is a pilot and allways is laughin with a diabolic laugh). I think was a french production. After i appreciated many other excellent animations as in the Monty Python movies or the excellent "Metal Hurlant" movie or the animation sequences in Pink Floyd's "The Wall" movie. The most recently i have admired is "The Iron Giant" wich i buy to my little son and he have see a hundred times. I likes it a lot for the art direction and also for the poetry of some momments, especially the end. Peace! |

Hi jrlo; LOL! I haven't seen a Farmer Grey cartoon since the early or mid-1950's! I, too thought I was the only one that remembered them.LOL! Good Hunting, there seems to be limited film available on the general 1950's programs. To me the 50's t.v. was the best! I didn't like too many shows after the 1960's either. S.S. |

Only people who have seen it know what the heck I'm talking about!! Oh and the Looney Tunes theme: "oveture...dim the lights this is it the night of nights..no more rehearsing and something our part...we know the parts by heart oveture dim the lights this is it the night of nights. Jrlo: The Fantastic Four's Invisible Girl (now called the Invisible Woman) not only could render herself unseen, she was also able to create invisible "force fields" to contain her enemies and protect herself from weaponry. More favorite cartoons from yesterday & today: Static Shock (it was mentioned earlier, great multi-racial cast - produced by the Warner Bros. folks who own the DC Comics line) Little Bill (Bill Cosby does it again! Includes the great voice talents of Phylicia Rashaad, Ruby Dee & the late Gregory Hines) Underdog (Hey, gotta love 'em!! And it's on DVD, too! There's no need to fear....) I always thought the Beatles and the Jackson 5 had an unfair advantage versus other groups in that they had cartoon series. They had a way of reaching the next generation of fans through the magic of syndicated re-runs in after school time slots. I know that's how I first noticed the Beatles when I was a lower-el kid in the mid-late 70s. Ah, memories... 2nd grade was four of the happiest years of my life. Regards, Ken |

I love the "Scooby Doo Movies". They are so funny! One of my favorites is when Scooby and the gang meet the Addams family. Another favorite is when Scooby and the gang meet Sonny and Cher. At the end of the cartoon, Cher really puts her foot down. Literally. The condemned house ends up sliding off the hill into the sea. That's Cher for ya. She always brings down the house. Another funny homorous episode is the one where the gang meets Jeanie. Scooby ends up getting a crush on her. My favorite is the episode where Mama Cass owns a haunted candy factory. Cass Elliot is very sarcastic towards the end of the cartoon when she and the gang goes out to eat. Cass plans to stick to her diet by eating grapefruit. When the waiter brings Cass nine grapefruit, they end up looking like sundaes. Nothing but grapefruit, huh? |

I'll tell you my all-time favorite cartoon. It's a Tex Avery cartoon, I don't remember the exact title, I think its name is Symphony In Slang. Something to that effect. It's the cartoon where this guy narrates a story using cliches & every phrase is shown literally. It begins with his standing at the pearly gates. He explains the story of how he died. He talks about a woman that he met & says that she has a bunch of little ones & a bunch of number ones wearing diapers are jumping around. He says that he fell to pieces, and he literally falls to pieces. He said that his girlfriend had a new flame, but he was just feeding her a line & the guy is feeding her line off of a reel & she's eating it like spaghetti. It ends with him saying that he found it so funny that he died laughing. Does anyone else remember this cartoon?? Then there's his Cukoo Clock & I Love To Singa. Great stuff!!!! |

Juice! "I Love to Singa"-that's one of my favorite early cartoons. Whenever I see it again, I end up singing that song for the rest of the day. "Symphony in Slang" is great too. Both are Tex Avery cartoons. |

Me too John...I love that one too. My Mom used to sing it all the time when it came on regularly. She also loved the one that said: 'Mutiny in The Nursery..Mu-ton-nee-in the Nurse-er-ree...Mother Goose is on the loose and the band began to jam!' That one is a swing-jazz hot tamali! ... |

Soul Sister & jrlo: When we got our first tv, I was 3 years old, I think, my favorite tv show was called "Junior Frolics" with Uncle Fred Sayles. They played the Popeyes & Betty Boops, and the old silent Aesop's Fables cartoons, that featured Farmer Gray. They were actually from the 1920's I think. Somewhere I have an Aesop's Fables VHS tape. I'm not sure if the Farmer is on any of the cartoons, but I'm going to search for it. I hope I still have it! A friend of mine has two decks and can make copies. I'll let you know on the board. |

WOW Lennytone! Thats SO cool, you've got a way better memory than me, but now that you mention the other toons that were in that group, it triggered my memory! Thanks for the childhood walk.(smile). Thats super that you may have all that on tape, those old silent cartoons were something else! I appreciate the offer of a copy, I think Jimmy would enjoy a laugh or two out them too if its at all possible. We 'd be happy to cover your cost. I'm pretty sure jrlo & her husband would be interested too! Thanks again, S.S. |

Lady Mystique....a 'smart blond' in a cartoon? Unheard of. Think of all the blonds in cartoons you can remembre and all of them were rendered 'helpless', brunettes 'evil, calculating' red heads 'zany, funny, clever' and any one that colored anything out of the norm was 'hiding something'....lol... |

I love Looney Tunes as much as the next kid. Two of my favorite characters are Bugs and Daffy. I love the hunting cartoons where Elmer Fudd chases them during hunting season and Elmer keeps shooting Daffy all the time. I always laugh until tears come to my eyes. Another funny episode is when Bugs Bunny and Daffy are trying to do a cartoon and their animators keep messing up the cartoon. LOL! |

Okay now my stomach is hurtin' up in here(in the words of Tommy on "Martin" Y'all stoopid(LOL) DyvaNaye thank you thank you, for this thread!!!! As I am posting Boomeraction ch 297 is about to come on-all the cartoons. When I found this station about 3yrs ago, I was in heaven! JuiceFree-LOL on Kimba, but that was my cartoon right there and yes I used to come home from school and watch that, I especially loved the theme music!!! Chancellor, you named just about everything I watched, Marine Boy(with the boomerang-whatcha know about that?) Why was Chumley so dumb on Tennessee Tuxedo, when I watch that now, I just holla!! It seems the cartoons, even though they are old, are funnier now than they were when we were little. Remember Tudor the Turtle-the wizard would send him somewhere and he would always get in trouble "Help Mr. Wizard!" Always, always I tell you Tudor, be just what you is not what you is not, folks welcome this as the happiest lot.(LOL) Does anyone remember the name of the cartoon with the Asian Mouse and at the end he would say "Sayonara"? Who could forget Aseop's Fables and the Banana Splits! Okay, and I know I'm not the only one(it wasn't a cartoon)who watched Romper Room with Miss Mary Ann!! Ultra-Man was the bomb!!! Precious Pup, Squiddly Diddly. LadyMystique, DANG you said the Chan Clan(I had the lunchbox in the 3rd grade!!!). Please can someone tell me how come we never saw Charlie Brown's & the rest of Peanuts parents or the teachers? Why did Charlie & the crew speak perfect English but the grown-ups said Wha whawha wha wha!!(LOL). Linus was jammin' on that piano though!! One of my favorite Charlie Brown specials was the Pumpkin Patch. Why did my boy Charlie keep gettin' rocks, y'all, and I sure would not have been sittin' in no freakin' pumpkin patch having bugs and stuff crawling & biting me in the behind waiting for the great pumpkin, shoot, I woulda been gettin my trick or treat on!!! Help me somebody- the cartoon that had jungle full of animals that talked and at the end the lion would always say "Crazy elephant!" I also liked Hong Kong Phooey, H.R. Puff N' Stuff-I wanted the magic flute! I know there are more, but the one the comes to mind-last but not least, The HILLBILLY BEARS!!!!! I'm sorry, but y'all those bears were black(LOL)- I loved the character voices for that one, I saw that when I started watching this channel & I just lost it(hadn't seen it in over 25yrs), I was on the floor!!! Remember the episode where Paw was a rock star & he was playing the guitar & singing or mumbling or the one where the woodpecker was making noise and Paw and junior were trying to catch it, that woodpecker was pecking on his head-hillarious!! They don't make 'em like that anymore, thank goodness they are preserved on tape. Some of these new cartons confuse me, although I do like the Powder Puff Girls and The Proud Family. Thank you all for sharing, I feel like you were all right there with my sister and I watching these cartoons, especially on Saturday morning after eating cereal with our high water pajamas on!!! P.S. Chancellor I do vaguely remember diaper man(LOL) I sometimes get into sessions about these shows with co-workers,most of them remember all of this stuff, I sometimes ask people about Marine Boy and they look at me and say stop lying(these are people who are a little younger than me, like my sisters age, but she remembers!!! TV was safe back then, now it is out of control!!!!!! Chat with Y'all tomorrow, BYE!!!!! |
