Hey everyone, I thought I'd mention on here that I will be making a work-related trip to Indianapolis in June for three weeks and I would love to know if anyone on here has any tips on how to make it a more soulful journey. I'll also be going up to Chicago for one of the weekends. I'm looking for tips on where to go to hear some good soul music, maybe do some record shopping, best places to go for drinks, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Philly Trammp: When you're in Chicago, check out these places: The Chicago Blues Heaven Museum - a/k/a the Chess Records Museum (2120 South Michigan Ave) - they usually have live performances in their courtyard area plus you get to see the fully-restored building where some of greatest music in the world was recorded. George's Music Room (3915 West Roosevelt) - George Daniels' great record shop where some of the best R&B can be found Dusty Groove America (1120 North Ashland Ave)- great reissued stuff on vinyl and CD in the Funk, jazz & soul variety Buddy Guy's Legends (754 South Wabash Ave) - great food menu (from shrip Creole to BBQ) and great music. Get there early because this place gets crowded easily! This should be fine for starters - feel free to walk around the Downtown Chicago area because you will see a few more spots along the way to eat and hang out. Also the public transportation system (CTA train & bus) is pretty easy to navigate. Have fun & I'll see you in the Windy City. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Thanks Kev, I'm looking forward to visiting Chicago for the first time. I didn't even think of 2120 S. Michigan Ave., but that is someplace I absolutely HAVE to visit. I'm going to avoid most of the touristy blues places, but the Chess studios are someplace I cannot deny. |

The Chess Studios building is a museum ala Hitsville. It's located on the far end of Record Row. The old Vee-Jay, then Brunswick building at 1449 S. Michigan Ave. though abandoned, is still standing. And don't forget to sample some of Chicago's world famous pizza. Giordano's, Gino's East and Edwardo's are a few of city's top pizzeria/restaurants. |

While in Indy, go to the "Slippery Noodle Inn" Downtown for some awesome live blues performances. For dinner, don't miss Elmo's Steak house. They are famous for their shrimp cocktails, with a cocktail sauce that will knock you against the wall. Right Downtown also. Sit at the bar and have the shrimp while you wait for your table. |

Hey Dvd Mike, Right on with Chicago's World Famous Pizza, that is a always a deluxe experience. Everytime Rare Earth travels into Illinois it is my responsiblity to find "the" place for deep Chicago pie. Kingston Mines on North Halsted, is a cool place for some blues jams. Chicago Tommy

The last reggae concert I attended was Eek-A-Mouse at the Cubby Bear, located on Clark and Addison Streets right across the street from Wrigley Field. The Wild Hare is another good reggae joint. For blues, try Buddy Guy's Legends on Wabash Avenue in the South Loop and Blue Chicago on North Wells Street near the Rock & Roll McDonalds, which unfortunately will be closing in the near future. Carson's Ribs is nearby. Great chow. |

If the weekend you are in Chicago is 6/10-6/13 you are in luck. It's Blues Fest weekend in Grant Park. 5 stages running for four days, all free. Big acts, lots of people you never heard of that you will fall in love with. The club scene is great all night. Tried to get a link to the schedule, but my 'puter is acting screwy. Go to cityofchicago.org and the mayor's office of special events or do a google search. dave |

Philly Trammp Hope you have more success than I had trying to visit the old Chess studios on South Michigan ave, I was there in September 01 and made numerous visits by taxi to the address, everytime it was closed, phone up and you get a recorded message telling you the opening times etc, but there's never anybody there. On a lighter note I did get to see one of my heroes, Jimmy Burns ex soul now great blues singer at the B.L.U.E.S club, if he's performing local go and see him you wont be dissapointed. |

Philly Tramp - The Chicago Reader is the local "free" guide to music, movies, museums, art galleries, & restaurants. It has an online version that comes out every Thursday. It's at www.chireader.com. I'll send you a paper copy if you want so you can check out the music venues for future shows. Can we still highlight our names for e-mail?
