So tonight it's Barry Manilow night. Miss Jennifer Hudson so far has stolen the show. What a performance, what a voice. Her performance kinda gives one hope for the future. As for George......waaa waaa, FLAT!!! Waiting on MS Latonya, looks like this could be settled 10 paces at dawn.

LaToya London sounded good, but I've gotta give it to Jennifer by a decision.

I flipped by Fox just in time to hear them say it was Barry Manilow night. Luckily I was already holding the remote...

Hey Weldon!
What did you think of Jennifer? That girl had some power in that voice. She held that last run for awhile & came out of it strong. Somewhere, Marvin Junior's smiling!

Hi Jucefree20, I think Jennifer did a good job this week, but there somthing about Lataya, that I have seen in some of the stars I worked with,I think she is so humble, and that what makes a star, I think she will win American Idol.

Hi Weldon, you may very well be right. I never really paid attention to Jennifer before tonight. I thought that LaToya was the star. Ms Hudson has opened my eyes tonight. I was always a LaToya fan from day 1. I think that she'll make it & I just hope that both of them hook up with a great producer.

And did no one see Fantasia tonight? Or any other week? She has consistently torn this thing up. I'm very surprised there hasn't been a mention in this thread about her gospel-like performance tonight.

She is a star.

I missed the show tonight. Is Red's performance FINALLY going to get him the ax? I feel sorta sorry for the guy -- each week he looks embarrassed when he's told he's safe. Even HE knows he's no good!

Sorry to say that his continuing on is either
1.Testimony that payola is alive & well. 2.Sympathy vote for the lounge singers of the world
3.Americans are truly tone deaf
4. All of the above

This guy has been horribly boring from day one. If this guy was a professional singer, he'd move straight to the top of yhe AARRRGH list. I'd rather have Dr Kervorkian as my doctor than to listen to this guy. That's it....he's an aural Kervorkian. Hey, I'd better copyright that.

Earth to Red: The Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Vaughan Monroe, Dean Martin thing is really boring. Especially when you can't sing. P.S. I'll talk to the Postmaster & see if we can get you a job at the Postal Service.

Fantasia is alright with me. She does her own thing & doesn't try to play it safe or cute. Who'd ever linked Barry Manilow songs with Gospel?? She had nerve to attempt that, as at their perkiest, Barry's songs have the effect of a tranquilizer dart on a lion....Take Sominex tonight & sleeeep!!! I just think that that LaToya & Jennifer have stronger voices & are more versatile.

I think that the bell is tolling for Mr Huff. He was absolutely dreadful tonight. He may survive because Red was worse.

Did I miss anybody???

Well, hands down, LaToya is still my favorite. Her performances consistently make the hair on the back of my neck stand up! I would have to say that I am becoming more and more impressed by Jennifer and less so by Fantasia. I'm sorry, but Fantasia ruined "It's a Miracle" for me. She still could have put a gospel edge to that song without getting carried away, especially at the end. All that posturing and "yeah-yeah riffing" nauseates me. Weakest last night for me was George, which is unfortunate because I think he has the chops. He got carried away. Looking at the big picture, though, he' probably make the cut. I predict either John the redhead or Jasmine will go.

When I thought of Barry Manilow songs that would be sung by the Idols, I knew that Red would sing "Mandy". I was dead right, it was the only song that could possibly fit his crooning style. I thought that Jennifer was dead on target. LaToya was also great, but IMHO it was not the best I've heard her sing. I still think that Fantasia is great and her rendition of Barry's song "Miracle" made me forget how much I dislike his songs. George did not put forth his best performance last night, but it was still better than Reds.

As far as performances go, I thought Jennifer Hudson did the best. After a somewhat shaky start, she has really been growing from week to week.

Fantasia also put a good spin on ITS A MIRACLE. But I do think the overblown gospel ending could have been cut. The song was just fine up until then.

LaToya did a good performance, but lately, she hasn't been thrilling me like she did in the past. She can definitely sing, but she's starting to become a bit boring.

George had his second mediocre performance in a row. He totally overssang last night. I hope he doesn't end up in the bottom three, although I wouldn't be surprised.

I actually enjoyed John's rendition of MANDY. He wasn't totally comfortable, but he was much better than the weeks he tried Motown and Elton John.

Diana and Jasmine. I think one of them is going to be gone tonight. They both sing well, but I don't find anything special about their performances. They are a bit predictable.

I hope I'm wrong but I think George is going home tonite. He has a very powerful voice but last night's performance was bad. I can't stand Jon Stevens but obviously someone likes him because he's still there. He should have been gone long ago. We'll see what happens tonite!

Look we already had 'the red hair kid' thing last season, and the way they promoted him you would have thought he won with Reuben...why dont they get that Alfred E Neumann looking boy off of the show? He sounds like a bad lounge singer that Bill Murray used to portray on SNL...

Fantasia kicked butt and I think the Gospel piece was Barry Manilows idea...he said he would have liked it done that way originally...she put spirit in it and the object was 'the miricle'...

Disappointed in George last night. He really has chops and doesn't need all of those bogus runs, etc. The only thing that saved him was that "ooh-hoo" or whatever, it was the only thing that rang true.

I have no idea why John Stevens is there, not only does he not have a good voice, he lacks the maturity to tackle most lyrics you give him. Good lord, Michael Jackson at 12 had a better grasp on stuff than "Red" does. If "Red" makes it any further, he ought to man-up and say, "I don't have it, I've got homework to do."

I am in TOTAL SHOCK over the show tonight. I finally can see for myself that this show has nothing to do with real talent. Even Ryan Seacrest said it is not to be treated as a popularity contest. But we know it is. I understand all of the students at the young red-headed kid's high school in Buffalo call for two hours. That's just not fair. Tonight, I turned it off for good.

I taped the show & went to the store. I came back to learn that that red headed guy is still there. What is America listening to? This guy is still here & you're telling me that Jennifer is out????!!!!! I think that I'll remain silent, I have nothing good to say & wouldn't want to slander any of my fellow Americans. Looks like the only taste some people have is taste buds. If that's true, then how do they swallow this crap??? Just wondering.

George was a no-brainer, but the other 3 in the bottom? Give me a break!

Linda Di - As you can see, in living proof, America is split right down the middle.

This is not about voting the best, as the votes are not based on the best.

You can also determine from the two groups, who has the money to pay for those long distant calls.

Think about it. Is "Red" an American Idol?? More than likely, the answer is "yes." Think about what that word means:
"A M E R I C A N IDOL."

Hey Sis, Lindi-Di, how are you. I'm feeling you on that, but usually, even A M E R I C A doesn't vote for such a boring guy like that. You know what I think it is???? I think it's the revenge of the seniors. Think about it. This is true, today, both Transit & Postal Computers went down in the afternoon. I think that a group of Perry Como fans, angry that Rock & Roll stole that doggie in the window, hijacked the votes. I think that they infiltrated & rigged the process so that this really boring guy would survive. He's the anti-Elvis. I think that this is serious payback.

When you think about it, Clear Channel dumping Howard Stern for indecency, all of this PC stuff going on today, could this be the ultimate conspiracy....making boring music popular again????

Seriously, when you look at the charts & see what the kids are listening to & then try to tell me that they really voted for this guy.......Something just doesn't compute. He's not that cute. Justin survived as long as he did because the girls thought that he was cute. He sings flat & monotone, so that's not the hook. EUREKA, I"VE GOT IT!!!! His hook is that he's.........EXTREMELY BORING!!!! I'd rather listen to William Hung sing I Believe I Can Fly. To my ears, he's infinitely better, as he knows that he can't sing. Again, I refuse to say what I really feel, it would indict too many people.
Tonight, I am
Disgusted Juice!!!!

Vonnie - I heard them say that this particular group made a cd which will be released, and is entitled something about "soul." I think they should not use that word because it seems that America does not want "Group A." America wants the return of Bing Crosby, to represent them as "An American Idol."

They don't want bluesy, jazzy, gospel like, soul sister representing them.

Well Sis all I can say is the more appropriate title to that cd should be "Sold Without Soul".

I'm so angry about the voting, there is no way that those three Divas should have been the bottom three. I'm suprised that the audience did not revolt. There's more to this than meets the eye. Were the people that voted deaf? It seems to me they certainly were not color blind....

Vonni - "Sold without Soul" (LOL) A good one for sure.

I totally agree with all of you. Red looked so guilty when he learned that Group B had received the top votes.

I was disappointed with George last night, but I believe Barry picked that song for George. I think he matched his songs with the contestants. (I think he knew what he was doing.)

When the guy told George to go over and stand with the winners, he, knowing who performed the best, went over to Group A. Group B was just as shocked as everyone that they had received the highest votes. So, we are not alone in our opinions.

He is in shock. He's probably sitting there trying to figure out the cruel joke. It's like when a boxer gets a gift decision, when he KNOWS that he lost the fight. This guy KNOWS that he shouldn't be there & there's something really wrong with American taste when "TALENT" like that wins. There's no way that anyone can convince me that todays's young adults actually voted for him. He's 180 degrees out of sync with what they're listening to. What, all of a sudden these kids are in love with Perry Como styled crooners????Not according to the Radio, TV, MTV, BET or the charts. It really breaks my heart when true talent isn't its own reward. How the people who voted for him can look in the mirror is beyond me. Now last year, Clay had some real talent. I could have accepted him winning. This guy should have been gone WEEKS ago. This, as they say is a travesty!

I will not watch the rest of this season. I'm still trying to figure out the joke. Maybe they're planning to spring some dramatic surprise on us, like a wild card or something. I know that no one on the panel is pleased with this vote. Maybe they can recount the chads!
I am still............

I told my daughter "If Howdy-Doody stays on another night, I'm not watching American Idol anymore". Sure enough carrot top made it and Jennifer was let go? There's no need to even say anything else..."We" know what's going on here...

Juice...you are on target. I work in a small office where I am the only African-American working there. Let me tell yall, "ALL" the people I work with love John!!! They gush over him as if he's somebody's baby! Just like they did Clay last year, and let me tell you, they were highly upset that Clay lost last year. I always ask them, "Are you telling me that John sings better than____ (fill in the blank)"? I always get "Well, I just like John".

It's all about popularity, and if that boy had any sense of fairness about himself, he should withdraw himself from the competition. (Yeah, I know, but I can dream can't I?) Really, sweeping renovations need to be made to that show, this is truly not fair and I for one, will no longer watch it.

Just to be fair, my white coworkers (me included) are very unhappy that John has gotten so far. He's probably a nice kid, but his talent is limited. The only contestants any of us are pulling for are the 3 most talented -- Jennifer, Fantasia and LaToya. I heard it's John's school mates and other schools in that district. The kids are all blitzing the phone lines to vote for him. I believe every phone number should be allowed ONE vote. Nobody should be able to vote more than once. I ain't watching no more. Everybody needs to turn it off, show the producers that we will not support a popularity contest that breaks hearts, careers and spirits, all the while the producers get rich.

I'm reminded that some of the other posters, many professional musicians, have been against the premise of this show from the start. Now I see why and I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention then.

I hope somebody out there gives these three ladies a record deal to get a career going.

As far as Jennifer getting ousted and LaToya also being in the bottom three this week, all I can say is that the cream always eventually rises to the top. Some savvy producer will have seen her and know what to do.
Jennifer has been in the bottom three a few times, and I think some people were put off by her in the first several episodes of the season, so she is suffering the fallout of that now. That is a shame, because for me, I have seen get better every week, and I was not an immediate fan of hers. A friend of mine says that there must be a bunch of kids voting and that they are voting others in just to be contrary, not because they even like another performer. It may be turning into a joke. However, unlike other posters here, I do see the value of a show like this because of the rotten music on the radio today. Much of what is popular is angry or filthy, and I want no part of it. I like my music uplifting and satisfying. Looking at the current charts, I don't find much worthwhile or memorable. OK, I'm off my soapbox now. I apologize for ranting....

I just spoke to a friend who asked a good question of me -- she asked me if I voted. Yes, I had. So I'll present that to the forum -- did you vote? My friend raised a good point. If we want to support the talented contestants, we gotta vote for them. People shouldn't watch the show, not participate, and scoff at the results. Jennifer's walking papers were handed to her for a lack of votes ...

It reminds me of what Bob Davis of Soul Patrol says about culture banditry. I can't quote him off the top of my head, but the jist of it is that nobody can take away something that we give them, that we don't care for and protect.

Speaking for myself, I in no way am trying to say that all of the people I work with are speaking for every white person in America. I DO find it awfully strange that they all (17) are pulling for John.

Let's be honest with ourselves though, 80% of the U.S. population is white, if American Idol draws 22-27 million people a week...do the math. I'm not buying that his pals and school district are calling in and making that much of an impact, only so many of them would be able to get through. When I call, I have had to wait for as long as 1 hour before I get through and my daughter and I are using cell phones and our land line! I'm in total agreement with juice, it's all of these middle of the road, easy listening, types who are pulling for John.

Let's be honest and call a spade a spade without having to bring up a "ugly" and "uncomfortable" topic that I'm sure!! Nobody wants to discuss on this forum. I'm not here for that, but I will call it as I see it, and that's how I see it as far as this show is concerned.

Hope no one is offended by my remarks.

No offense taken, Morgan. Your frustration is certainly in order. As a white man who, aside from my passion for Soul, is an avid Sinatra lover, let me just say that John Stevens has needed to go for quite a few weeks now. It's not enough that he's singing in the Frank/Dean/Perry Como style. The truth is he's just not that good at it. Yes, he's 16 and will probably get better, but he doesn't belong in this competition, with the talent he has to go up against here.

I think it is easy to assume racism plays a part here, and it wouldn't surprise me to find that it does, but I think what also happens here is that we tend to think certain performers are going to be safe (Jennifer, Latoya, Fantasia), because they're so much better than the rest. Therefore, we tend not to bother voting for them, and they wind up suffering for it.

I honestly think it's the best thing that could've happened to Jennifer because had she won this, or even came in second, she'd probably be tied up contractually by the producer of Idol, who has dibs on the top performers. Now, Record Companies will be knocking on her door (even though I believe no contestant is allowed to release a product until a certain amount of days AFTER the finale of the season), and she can go with anyone she chooses.

There's no doubt she's got what it takes to be a star, and when the dust settles, Jennifer Hudson will be where she belongs....recording and selling CDs, and John Stevens will be where he belongs......hanging with his college buddies and singing in Karaoke bars.

I ain't mad at ya. If we're being totally honest, America's not ready for an all-Black contest. It's racism and it is ugly and uncomfortable. But it is what it is, and we have to keep fighting it. Frankly, I was surprised when Ruben won. But it doesn't mean that people shouldn't be allowed to like who they like, i.e., John Stevens. We just have to be louder and bigger and stronger and keep on pushing.

That's right Morgan...it's a race thing. It's just another attempt of whitey to screw the black folks.

I highly doubt American Idol is being racist.
Considering that most of the music awards of late have been dominated by black artists.

I am not saying there is no racism in the U.S.A because it is there no doubt. But just to let you , not everything is about race.

Goat,

You are definitly WRONG, it is about race. How could you equate the caliber of Red with the talent of LaToya, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson or even Jasmine Treas. Do you really think he is on the same level? Middle america has voted for "their idol", a person who resembles them in color, but certainly not TALENT! This is truly a shame that people still think in this manner. I for one would vote for anyone no matter what color, race or creed if they truly deserved the vote. Do you really think that he deserves the votes, he has gotten?

If you think he is really that good, I guess that you'll be spending your $14.95 to pick up Reds first album, but I certainly won't.

John Stevens has not won anything yet, but his continued survival in the voting is beyond my (and if his facial expressions are any indication, his) comprehension. Jennifer gave arguably the best performances of the last two weeks. George Huff has been terrible the last two weeks, but did not hit the bottom three. Assuming they perform well, I bet Latoya and Fantasia both rebound in the voting next week, as I doubt any of this week's top four will be picking up any of the votes that went to Jennifer.

I wonder if Simon unwittingly doomed Jennifer by grouping her with Fantasia and Latoya in the "battle of the divas" comment. It probably resulted in a lot of votes being split between the three of them, but may result in those votes being "owned" in future weeks by Latoya and Fantasia, too.

In any case, the only thing that I am sure of is that I am wasting way too many brain cells on this silly show. :-)

Regards,
Ken

I hear you on that Livonia Ken.

Vonnie. I highly doubt the pop. of the U.S.A is intentionally trying to get rid of the black artists. Remember Rueben Studdard? He wasn't the best either.

I can bet that mostly younger teenage girls call into the show and that they don't like the women all too much. (Great voices, good looks, on stage with adoring fans...). Or it could be a ploy by American Idol to shake things up a bit. Keep the viewers on edge this year. Remember, AI is only as good as it's ratings.

Hardly a call for racism. Save that for the real struggle.

I want to share this email I received from a friend re: last night's IA voting.

"I just talked to my Hawaiian co worker and her mom voted 875 times for that
HI girl. Her mom is in town visiting so she voted 2 hrs. straight on her
daughters' cell (you get 2 hrs in CA) and then used her HI cell for another
2 hrs. This is why the voting is F--ked up and the losers are still in the
competition."

I agree with the person who said earlier in this thread that voting should be limited to one phone call. At this point, it is clear this is a popularity contest and not a talent contest and maybe the name of the show should be changed to AI Popularity Contest.

I expect nothing less from the citizens of the USA. They've been raised well.

Although I do not vote on AI for any of the contestants, I do however vote in the political polls.

Don't you find it suspicious on how the producers of the show, has changed the format in showing who is out and who stays?

It's ironic that now they put them in groups. This way, we will see the make-up of the voters. Are the producers sending us a message in this new format?

Hi Morgan!

I have to tell you that this decision has crossed all boundaries. I work in a pretty mixed environment & everybody has been unanimous in their opinion of Reds talent, basically that he's lacking. On the news this morning, EVERY reporter that spoke of it was disgusted. You know that it's bad when the weatherman complains about it on the news. You'd have thought that someone screwed up his Doppler or something.

Now the latest theory is that voters thought that the others were safe. I hate to say this but maybe, just maybe.....this is revenge for O.J. Hmmmm.......

Hey er'body!

Juice, I feel what you're saying (as usual!) and I see that some people are quite surprised by the voting. I don't think the show took into consideration that some people will vote along "like" lines vs. talent and I predict that renovations will be made for next year's show. (I hope)

I like the show and I hate to see that it has turned into this travesty where people are voting for "nice guys" or the people they can "relate" to. What?? That's the sort of garbage I heard today and the show isn't about that. If I hear one more person say "John is a nice kid, but..." Who cares if he's nice? White or Black- He can't sing!! Get to steppin' John!!! You gots ta go!!

I am so frustrated after last night, that I believe the only way to get the show to change the voting process is to give them another black eye by throwing all of my support behind "Red." If he wins this thing, I expect the whole show to just stop. It's already become a bad joke. How could the three most talented singers be in the bottom of the voting??? I am thankful though that Jennifer along with Latoya (My Favorite) and Fantasia have gotten enough exposure and shown enough talent that they will soon join Tamyra and Kimberly Locke in the ranks of recording artists and have their own albums. For me that is the only satisfaction that I get in watching the show anymore.

Walt, that's exactly the problem. It's like the All-Star Game where they stuff the ballot box. They encourage mass calling & they don't encourage people to vote for the best, they encourage them to vote for their FAVORITE. That, in of itself is a flawed system.

The other thing that I dislike is this whole "human interest" angle. Remember the guy with the deaf parents??? Now, how could you feel good voting against a guy like that??? If you're a normal human being, that's an immediate guilt trip.

They have to seriously revamp this show as the voting process is becoming like Boxing judging.

It's all subjective. Each of us feels a special way about music and finds it difficult to understand why everyone else doesn't like the very same thing we do. Some people have a thing for tenors and cannot even fathom a bass singer singing lead. I don't think race has a thing to do with it.

A Motown executive just said that Motown music has become the standard and established itself as timeless. So we are seeing more and more releases of compilations of Motown albums. Interestingly, I heard a white woman and a white man listening to the Temptations and each said, "That's my music." A little bit later I heard a black man and a black woman listen to the same music and say, "That's my music."

Good music wins out every time. Same way with literature. If the book is great, it will be around for eons.

Contests are always rather meaningless. What stays is what counts. Sophocles came in third in a play writing contest in ancient Greece. No one remembers which writers came in first and second.

It really doesn't matter. The cream will rise to the top. Jennifer & LaToya have what it takes. This could be the best thing that could've happened to them. I believe that the attention they're receiving from this travesty may be beneficial to them. I'll tell you this, I'd love to be their agent right about now.

As for Red, when his LP goes Paper Bag, or, Aluminum, we''ll see him co-star in the new version of The Love Boat. Right now, Robert Goulet is somewhere hiding his face in embarassment.

Sis,
George was in the "A" group despite giving a subpar performance, and they did not indicate whether he was at the top or bottom of those four. Perhaps it is actually sexism on the part of the voters? Anyway, controversy=ratings, so Fox won't complain either way.

Livonia Ken - Hello neighbor. Dont forget GB, Jr. is president of the USA due to 537 votes which came out of his brothers State of Florida. I know how the system works. I was with the feds for over 32 years. My mind may be analytical because I was a federal investigator for over 25 years.

I do not believe in chance, except at the casinos. :o)

The producers of American Idol, along with their staff knew the results of the votes prior to the live show. They saw the dividing line Maximum effect is what the producers want, and they played it to the hilt.

By design:

1. They called the contestants one at a time, separating them into two groups. Knowing before hand, the image of the racial (color) make-up.

Im sure they discussed before the show, the thoughts which would go through the minds of the viewers.

2. They saved George (black AA male) for last. Why?? They didnt have to save him for last.
We all know that he was at his worst on his last performance. They informed him that he would be coming back the following week.

3. They could have saved Red or any of the other winners for last. Thereby having George already in the group with the two white (No matter what nationality) females. But they didnt because of the effect of the image which would be played to the viewers, mentioned in #1 above.

4. Purposely not having divulged which group received the most votes, they asked George to stand with the other winners. The producers knew who the best performers were, and they knew that George would automatically stand with Group A. Now, look at the two groups. Four blacks, and three whites.

5. By design, now here comes the element of surprise. George, you are in the wrong group. Group B is the group with the highest votes.

(I salute Pat Tillman. RIP to an American Hero.)

Last week when the votes were announced, on the top tier of the couch were Fantasia, LaToya, Jennifer, George, and Jasmine. The bottom tier showed John S., JPL, and Diana. The bottom row were the bottom three. JPL bit the dust, and I don't think he was the weakest performer last week.
This week Fantasia, LaToya and Jennifer were in the bottom three. None were weak.
I do not think America is voting on the basis of race.
I am as perplexed by Jen's ousting just as much as everyone else. The girl has talent, and some savvy record company owner had to notice. Heck, even Elton John was upset with the results. I don't know what's going on in the mind of the voters, but maybe "one vote per phone" is the answer.

JPL sounded better this time than ever before. I think George was the weakest on Tuesday. Jen was the best this time around.

Don't blame the boy's boringness on the style - he's no Sinatra. He's just a young kid from a very sheltered, staid background who can't swing to save his life. He'd be boring no matter what he sang. He's suited for singing lead in the choir at the local Lutheran church.

I have always considered the show to be an illegitimate abomination, but I kind of put up with it out of a certain morbid curiosity. This is the last straw.

The show's a bunch of crap anyway. It's principle function seems to be to legitimize the idea that cynical corporate gate-keepers are the proper arbiters of public taste. But teenaged white America threw them a curve. Corporate pandering to demographics and ignorance wasn't supposed to be this naked. The gate-keepers were supposed to be able to steer back toward meritocracy just enough to maintain a veneer of legitimacy. American Idol was, is, and always will be a popularity contest, they just didn't want Joe Public to know it. That reinforces the idea that gross pandering to the lowest common denominator is actually meaningful art.

I imagine that some people around the show may be a little shaken, but cooler heads know that the American public is stupid enough that this will blow over. Hell, they bought the Bush gang's war even after they were tested with the Banana-Republic election fiasco. All is well in the corporatist fascist state.

On the other hand, the producers could have minimized the negative affect of the votes. During television, changes are often made.

Seeing the results, they could have changed the process of elimination to lessen the negative impact of the viewing public. They shoul have just named the contestant with the lesser votes, and let that person perform. But they wanted the controversy.

I don't know about your station, but on my station, the show was cut off soon after Jen started singing her song. Since they were so busy inciting uproar, and playing mind games, we did not hear Jen's farewell performance due to lack of time.

The bottom line is that it sucks. This vote for your favorite crap sucks. Why don't we vote for our favorite NBA team, or our favorite Baseball team. Who needs to play the games, let everyone vote for their favorites. By these standards, the 1962 Mets would have been crowned champions, or The 1940-58 Dodgers would've won everywhere.

I expect no less from America, where talentless singers sell Platinum & become "SUPERSTARS". A country where mind numbing shows such as Survivor, Big Brother, The Bachelor, et.al are considered to be big time entertainment. This is just an example of the continual dumbing down of American Society. We get too much quantity & very little quality. My, how far our standards have fallen.

As for Jennifer, here's a link to her comments: http://kevxml2a.verizon.net/_1 _2JIYTO104K97T8C__vzn.isp/apnw s/story.htm?kcfg=apart&sin=D82 4LS2O0&qcat=entertain&ran=3088 2&passqi=&feed=ap&top=1

The look on everyones face spoke volumes to the ludicracy of the situation.

SisDetroit:

Jennifer's closing performance was cut short everywhere. They spent so much time building the drama with that episode that they ran out of time.

Last night, ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT showed some of what happened after the broadcast ended. More of Jennifer's performance was shown, as well as footage of her fellow contestants crying during her performance.

Saturday - England

We only got both shows last night and they put them together - both nights.

So I have kept away from this thread so I didn't know the result, and well I am just lost for words! on the way the voting went.

How those three DIVA'S where in the bottom three, well it is beyond belief.

For me, LaToya London is the true professional in every sense of the way, another Gladys kNight or Anita Baker. I love Fantasia, but I do not think she would last the time LaToya Truly Can - George I just love, he i s even in another league to Rueben for me!

Sad to see Jennifer go last night! she has some mighty lungs - she will get a deal! she has to - I still think RED has something and I would love to have ago at managing him and kicking him into some shape.

But 19 Management and Mr Cowell, are ruthless and they are only interested in big bucks and not the Kids as Artists or People.

The let us Brits down! - Regards John

Hey John Barry! I agree with your assessment. With time & grooming, perhaps Red could have a future. As for right now, he's simply not close to being ready. I think that he needs to woodshed a bit.

I think now is time for the show to be revamped. Get more credible judges with and go Star Search style. America does not know true talent and they are letting the non talented go further. Although I believe Jennifer like Tamyra Gray and Frenchie Davis will have great careers..It is a travesty to let them go from the competition. Fox would have gotten better ratings if Jennifer, Latoya, and Fantasia were the final 3. Red should have been gone awhile ago. This is truely a travesty and tragedy for American television and reality shows

His version of I Believe I Can Fly is priceless. The only difference is that his music is intended to be bad. It's like a bad novelty act. Everybody loves an underdog & it's like how everybody rooted for the 1962 Mets. It's an inside joke & that's the hook with Mr Hung. He's so incredibly bad that these folks feel that he's cool. I think that people just buy the CD for laughs & God bless him, I hope that he gets enough to pay his tuition. I don't think that it's fair to people who struggle for a break, who have real talent. I guess that you have to love America, where else could this happen???? 40 years ago it was Tiny Tim & Yoko Ono. Today, it's Mr Hung. I'm trying to keep things in perspective here, but must admit that this William Hung thing pisses me off a great deal. True talents like The Dells & Cheryl Lynn & can't get a contract & this guy gets a deal??? It makes me sick whenever I think of it. But, that's the type of brain cells most of today's music fans have. Then again, look at our popular TV shows: Big Brother, The Bachelor, Survivor, I Want To Look Like A Rock Star...America is starting to become braindead, as regards "entertainment". Disgusting!!!

Hey Juice, it's your partner in crime here! You said "starting to become braindead" -- honey, I couldn't agree with you more. The day after the infamous wardrobe malfunction when all of the media types were hysterical, I read the TV listings for that Monday night. Fear Factor was "people lay in coffins with chicken's feet and rats." Now I ask you ... where on this earth would THAT be okay to air and Janet's accident create such a commotion. The American public has been off the mark for years regarding entertainment and celebrity. That's why Soulful Detroit is such a wonderful home for all of us! We got good taste, baby!

I am so upset, I think this should be the last season of American Idol! The record buying public would'nt know talent if they stepped in it on the street!!!

Good afternoon Lady Di & jrlo. I argee with both of you. Being a male, I couldn't relate to the teeny bopper thing. As a boy, I never yelled & screamed for girl singers. Actually, that was a phenomenom created solely for dreamy eyed girls. Singers weren't marketed to us fellas in that way. Regardless, a modicum of talent was necessary to pull it off. Red?????? I don't get it at all.

Yes Linda Di, the taste scale has rapidly spiralled downward. Now we'll get to see more reality shows like Boxers & The Restaurant. Can a reality show based on an colon cleansing be far behind??? What a sad state of affairs this is!!!

Spock was conflicted! He saw all of those bodacious booties, but, he was so scientific that he calculated the amount of bacteria that the saliva of a kiss would contain. So, although he wanted to press his advantage, his scientific mind figured that the risk of catching germs, just wasn't worth the trouble. Silly rabbit!
Not only that, but once he saw the great acting of one James T. Kirk & heard him sing those dulcet tones, he swore off of women & sex forever. William Shatner can have that kind of an effect on a fella, you know?

Hey Sis, as you read in the SDAnonymous thread, we all are chained to this site. Yes, Issac has competition, my voice is just as deep as his. I've got to find some more of those chains though.

jrlo, that's payback for one again overlooking my obvious charms. SPOCK????? SEXY???? Indeed!

Vonnie & Linda Di, I'm sorry for the disruption of your equilibrium. I never knew that wearing chains would bring out such a reaction. Yes, Vonnie, I never knew that chains could be so liberating. I also didn't realize that chains could be so......................cold & heavy! And under all of those hot lights............they burn!!! After that show, I looked like the Beech Nut zebra.

I didn't want to put on such a display of blatant raw sexuality. I'm usually a modest man. But, CAPTAIN KIRK????? SPOCK????? I had to stand up for the power of the Juice, for the Juice is good!!! I wrote a song about it, you like it?? Here it goes....... Somebody, give me a D flat puleeeze!

I AM JUICE (In D Flat)
(VERSE)
I am Juice, hear me roar.
In chains too shiny to ignore.
I've got a big bald head the ladies like to touch.
I am Juice on the scene
See me on your computer screen.
Though I wont wear chains again
They're just too much.

(NEXT VERSE)
Ohh, ohh yes, I am Juice
And though some people try to mock
Ohh, ohh yes, I am Juice
And I'm sexier than Spock
Give me a picture & I can be anyone.

(Chorus, Bring it home now)
I am cute (cuuuute), I am funny to boot (funny to boot)
I AM JUICCCCCCCE! YEAEAAAEEEEAAAAEAAAHMAMAMAMAYE AEAEAEAEAAAAHH!!!!!
(Sorry about that run at the end, I got carried away)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!
That's all I've got to say about it.

P.S. I hope that this will not affect our friendships!

DISCLAIMER: Helen Reddy wasn't hurt in this song!

NEWS FLASH

On EXTRA they interviewed Elton John regarding the American Idol fiasco. Elton said "he found it incredibly racist that the three best singers who are black were put into the bottom three."

The shows producer said "that is not true, the voting has been all over the place this season".

Vonnie,
I believe the Elton quote indicated that Jennifer, Fantasia, and Latoya were "always" in the bottom three, and that is what the producers said was not true. Jennifer had been there a few times, and Latoya had been there once previously. In any case, I hope this week's voting results are easier on my ears than last week's. :-)

THE REDHEAD KICKED THE BUCKET! THE REDHEAD KICKED THE BUCKET! I guess that they ran out of talent to vote off. We all know that LaToya belonged in the bottom three. How could she be bottom three material last week, yet, safe this week???They couldn't have had the travesty that they had last week. Actually what happened was truly justice at work. He's been so boring that he finally put his fans asleep & I wonder what took them so long. They fell asleep 5 weeks too late if you ask me. Somewhere, Perry Como is smiling. The world's now safe for lounge singers everywhere. That's it, it's a lounge singer conspiracy, they flooded the phone lines. Yeah, that's the ticket!

The whole American Idol furor is brings to mind a phenomenon discussed by Nelson George in his book "The Death of R&B." I also remember a big agent writing about it in his memoirs as he recounted his experience as a marginally talented Rock and Roll performer. It should be quite familiar to many of us.

Both authors talked about shows in the 50's and 60's that mixed young, callow, white Rock & Roll acts with older black acts that had been seasoned on the Chitlin Circuit and beyond. The generally white audiences screamed at more or less the same level, with relative indifference to the actual abilities of the artists. The agent expressed his feeling that it was a shame that his spirited but unaccomplished group generated as much or more heat among teenaged audiences than accomplished pros like Chuck Berry.

The fact is that group identification and demographic ballast tend to trump meritocratic ideals in a wildly commercialized culture like America's. Without the ten-dollar words: people will accept inferior product from people they like and identify with as quickly or more quickly than they will accept excellence from stigmatized people, as long as it roughly serves the same purpose. The group with the power controls the market, even if it depends to some extent upon weaker groups for creative input.

Allan Freed borrowed the term "Rock and Roll," from black slang to difuse the ethnic taint of the R&B "Race Music" on which he began to capitalize. As increasing numbers of young white acts began to produce a facimile of R&B reasonable enough for teenaged white audiences to accept, the audiences found less use for the established black acts that had previously delivered them product. Rock and Roll began to completely decouple itself from its R&B roots in the minds of both black and white audiences.

The same process has occurred to the extent that circumstances allow in Jazz and even the Blues. You have "Christian Music," which is white Gospel, and Southern Gospel for "hillbillies." You have the Elvis of Rap, Eminem, and the process would be more advanced in the Rap genre if it was easier for white acts to tap into just the right blend of rebellion, and exoticism that white audiences seek in rappers.

I think that black people do ourselves a disservice in being overly preoccupied with acceptance by the outer hegemony. We neglect to strengthen our internal base of support and protect it from the predations of corporate interests. In the musical arena, when we produce something of merit, as we so often have, the world takes notice. Sometimes that's where the trouble starts. We tend not to make enough of the money that gets made in the process.

Where the American Idol contestants are concerned, if you like what they're doing, cheer them on, vote for them if you must participate in that kind of thing, buy their record when it comes out - even raise hell if you think they're getting the shaft. But don't believe the hype. Don't put too much stock in the American Idol process itself. There are a lot of things illegitimate about the show, but the particular issue of demographic washouts and even bias in the judging or voting comes with the territory. It's more important to develop and passionately maintain alternative models for discovering, supporting, commercializing, and even defining talent.

Juice, I hope you were joking when you said LaToya belonged in the bottom three.

As far as who's in the bottom from week to week, I can see that it could vary depending on how people view the performances. It's not the singer that they're voting for, it's the particular performance. Of course, that doesn't explain why John S. lasted so long, but I guess we can't rule out fan base, either...

Mike Sku,
I guess there's no way to say this without getting personal, but it appears that you are nearly consumed by all things American Idol, from singing the praises of that milquetoast Clay Aiken to letting us know that you've voted multiple times during a single episode.

I realize I may be in the minority here and I'm ready for the negative feedback, but, ratings be damned, AI is just a boot camp for future Vegas and ad jingle singers, IMO. Sure, big ratings will propel the first recorded efforts of a few select contestants fairly high into the charts but overall the schmaltz factor is damn near off the charts.
(It's probably a personal taste thing; I prefer my music/entertainers with a little edge and these wannabes are baby smooth edge-free)

Uh, seriously though, aren't you just a little afraid of being perceived as the forum's Champion of Cheese? (smile)

John,

For one thing, I guess I get caught up in the competition. I like to see what kind of raw talent America has because I am hoping (maybe against hope) that American music will improve. I do not expect these youngsters to be seasoned performers. I also prefer my music to be a little more "evolved", but everybody has to start somewhere. Gladys Knight started out on a similar program. So did Cheryl Lynn -- the Gong Show, in fact. And schmaltzy or not, Linda Eder and Sam Harris, among others, were on the original Star Search. I think AI shows us that rare thing today called "potential". It is just a shame that our country is really not embracing any kind of pop music at present, and the top of the charts are full of rappers, not my idea of real soul music.
Incidentally, I felt I had to vote for LaToya after the Jennifer Hudson fiasco of the previous week. I thought at least I'd do my part to keep my favorite in. I guess I'm just that fiercely loyal that way.
My personal musical tastes are pretty eclectic. Last night I listened to Jeff Kashiwa and Diana Krall right after viewing AI and this morning I played Ian Levine's Motorcity Memories at work. So if I'm going to be the Champion of Cheese, let's just say there are a lot of different kinds of cheese in the world, some tastier than others. (Smile)

Mike, of course I was kidding. I thought that either LaToya or Jennifer would have won the whole ball of wax. My post was written, dripping with sarcasm & comtempt for what this show has become & the lack of taste of the American TV viewers that voted.

What bothers me about the show is this: It's like watching a boxing match where you're watching a guy beating the hell out of his opponent, only to get shafted by the judges. That can be a very demoralizing experience & is patently unfair. When I see videos or read the music charts, I know damn well that these voters are not into the kind of music that Redhead was singing. If that's the case, why in hell did they vote as they did?

I'm sick & tired of hearing the audience clapping & applauding, as though they're hearing the 2nd coming of Sam Cooke & Jackie Wilson. These mediocre talents murder notes in a manner that would make John Dillenger proud & these fools are applauding like they're about to have orgasms.

Some of these budding singers are nowhere on key, sing flat & everyone's applauding. Seriously, I just don't get it. Is there a flashing "applause" sign that the audience has to follow? Is clapping mandatory in an attempt to fool us into believing that we're hearing some really good stuff? Has Americas' standards truly dropped so low, that we accept mediocrity to be "de riguer"???

There's nothing wrong with Pop music. I've loved The Beatles, The Four Seasons, The Mamas & The Papas & I eevn liked Elusive Butterfly by Bob Lind & Red Rubber Ball by The Cyrkle. I thought that Sam Harris had a hell of a voice & he sang the hell out of Over The Rainbow. I evn thought that Clay had a hell of a voice & that he is definitely a singer. Red just doesn't sing well, his performances are simply not GOOD Pop! I wouldn't mind it if he could only sing!

That's my problem. Redhead is nowhere on a par with a Sam Harris, or a Clay Aiken. His voice has no dynamics, he has no range to speak of. His voice doesn't takes you on a journey, there's no peaks or valleys, no climax & no release. He just drones on in a monotone manner & it's very hard to get into his performances. It's about as appealing as a meal consisting of water & cardboard.

His performances don't leave me with the impression that he loves this music. It rings false & comes across as though he faking it. His style just isn't believable to me, I don't feel his connection, or conviction to his persona, or, to the music. I don't feel it, there's simply nothing going on there.

He's like the audio version of The Night Of The Living Dead, or, The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. His singing lacks emotion, it lacks soul. It's as though if he shows a hint of emotion, the Govt will discover that he's not part of "them" & then turn him into a zombie....OOPS, TOO LATE :-)

Then, I have to hear both Sir Barry of Manilow & Gloria of Estafan state what a great performance I've just heard. Then Paula gushes & I sit & wonder what's wrong with their ears? I won't even get into the audience response.

I'm tired of the human interest angle & the feeble attempts to create interest with those damn cutsie human interest angles. It's like an episode of The Monkees, they're clowning in the mall, they're clowning at the beach...ENOUGH ALREADY!!! I just want to hear good performances, not kitsch.

I would settle for good kitsch. :-)

I watch the show because I can watch it with my kids and because it is one of the few instances on television where you can see actual live singing. I freely admit that my standards have been lowered.

BTW, I estimate that if my standards continue lowering at the current rate, within a year I will be enjoying the little Ford and Subway ads the contestants perform and wandering through the "errgh" thread on this forum defending Gary Lewis & the Playboys and Freddie & the Dreamers. I hope it doesn't come to that, though.:-)

Regards,
Ken

Poor old dad! I sure hope that there's no more siblings lurking around. Oh yeah, that would have been New Kids On The Block :-) They go bye-bye!!! I Wonder Why????
