Hi Mel I may be wrong but I don't think it is the Manhattans group that did Kiss and Say Goodbye. GW enthusiasts may know more. |

The Golden World Manhattans group was made up of Caucasian singers from Detroit. No connection with The NY group. We have at least one (if not more) ex members of that group here on SD. I forget who it is. They had some other records out on small independent Detroit labels. |

Mel: I have not checked my copy but isn't this title you mention released as GW 14 and as Robb stated above it was a white group. |

Mel This Manhattans' 45 was Golden World 14 - as Ron stated. "Just a Little Loving" was written by Bob Hamilton and J. Pashkot. The flip is titled "Beautiful Brown Eyes" - written by A. Smith and A. Delmore. I would guess that Pashkot, Smith and Delmore were in the group.

Mel There's another "Detroit" 45 by a group called The Manhattans. It's on the Big Mack label, of Bob & Fred fame. I've only heard one side - "Why Should I Cry" - which is a slow, doowoppish, early-soul number, from around '63. The flip is titled "Feeling Is Mutual." I don't know the writer/production credits but IMO this group sounds black, so guess it's a different one to the Golden World outfit.

Hi Graham, Mine is only a repro, but should give you some of the info you are looking for. And I DO believe this is a different group, as Flynny states. Nikki

The Starfire record was done by the NY group that was famous for its Carnival recordings, and went on to DeLuxe and Columbia. Big Mack was a local Detroit label. So, I assume that record was sung by the Detroit (Caucasian) group that recorded for Golden World. |

Hi Nikki I see that Donald Calloway wrote this Big Mack side; he (and his brother?) Larry Calloway wrote both sides of The Gran Prixs' 45 on Big Mack too. Who wrote "Feeling is Mutual"? |

Nikki, Starfire is my old friend Rip's label. Doubt he had the rights to that record, most likely a bootleg. I'm sure Carnival is the original label. |

Rip Lay's Starfire Records were pressed in the '70s, correct? That would mean that it was a re-issue. The flyer states that he licensed the rights (45 rpm?)from Solid Smoke (Rhino's R&B re-release label from the '70s and early '80s). It could be that Solid Smoke had no interest in pressing 45s. I believe they DID release a vinyl 33rpm album on The Manhattans' Carnival cuts. Lay may have leased the 45 rpm rights for very little money, as there wasn't much market. I doubt that he would have had an elaborate jacket or flyer that claimed he had leased the rights from Solid Smoke if it were a bootleg. Solid Smoke People would have seen it. In any case, the original recording was done by Carnival, even though likely unreleased by them during the '60s. |

Nikki; To cut to the chase "The Manhattans" on the top two you posted are the Jersey City group with my ex "Smitty" singing lead. The bottom record scan is someone else. Nikki, see my thread on "The Manhattans Photos" in Forum Search November 2003. Melandthensome; Hi, I just got in from the Carnegie Hall "gig" for 'The Rain Forest Benefit' put on by Sting & his wife Trudie Styler. The group you mentioned is not my "Manhattans", NEVER heard of the one from Detroit. Here we go again!LOL! S.S. |

Nikki; Thats "Smitty" at the very top of the group, a fairly early photo around time of "Can I", "Searching For My Baby", & "I'm The One Love Forgot". Lennytone; The original of of the Xmas tunes were on Joe Evan's Carnival label. In fact, of all of Smitty's recordings, his personal favorite was "Alone On New Year's Eve". S.S. |

Thanks, Soul Sister. I hadn't known they had been released before. Were they on 45s? If so, do you know which number(s)? |

RobbK; Unfortaneatly all what is left of my Carnival 45's are sacked away in storage boxes, but for what its worth, if, my memory doesn't fail me, the songs I named are on definately 45's, but I think the Xmas tunes were only on the album but not 100% possitive on those. Where is Rd (?), he may recall about the Xmas & New Year's tunes.(?) RD...? S.S. |
