I know she is a disco diva but none other than Aretha Franklin said in an interivew she listened to Gloria's records. Love Tracks got great reviews. I do like her voice. Any thoughts? |

I like that Jocida single too Mel. Gloria's very first from 1965. Johnny Nash, who owned the Jocida label was the one who actually gave her the stage name Gloria Gaynor. Gloria is an OK singer but nothing special IMO. I like a handful of her songs like 'Let's Mend What's Been Broken', 'When You Get Around To It' (both produced by McFadden & Whitehead) and her remake of 'Stop In The Name Of Love' but most of her tunes are a bit too Popish and Hi-Gloss for me. In fact, 'I Will Survive' is a song that I love to hate!

Now GG has some great soul sides to her; my fav being: 'I'm The Luckiest Girl In The World'. One should also stand up and take note of: 'Casanova Brown'/'This Love Affair'/'You Can Exit'/Let's Make Love'/Can't Fight The Feelin' & the afore mentioned 'Let's Mend What's Been Broken' ...& for a BOOGIE CHOON; 'Runaround Love' cuts it! Pure class IMHO. Keep Feelin' Jester. |

You've gotta love Anybody Wanna Party & You Can Exit from her 1979 Love Tracks LP. Of course there's Do It Yourself & Casanova Brown. Rod, Mel, Tony, if it wasn't for the Gay DJs & movement, IWS would have been relegated to the 2nd tier status that it so richly deserved. This record creates a nostalgic feeling only when comparing those days of '79 to these uncertain times. No disrespect, but this song was an overblown, over dramatic song, written for those who feel sorry about their sorry lot in life. I just felt like shaking them & saying, "Hey, s--t happens, get up, get over it....you're not the only one". Damn, have a Coke & a smile already, it's been 25 years now. Oh no, I guess that we'll have a 25th Anniversary of this song, just what we need! Juice |

Man, you're so right about 'I Will Survive' being "overblown and over dramatic" Juice! I can't sit through Gloria's reading of it. I read somewhere years ago that originally it wasn't even the A side of the single that it was on. Glo's record label didn't even think much of it! LOL. But like you said, gay DJ's AND women jumped all over this tune and made it their anthem. You may recall back in the mid 90's a young vocalist named Chantay Savage totally revamped 'I Will Survive' and had a R&B hit with it. Chantay slowed down the tempo, stripped the tune of all it's the over the top melodramatics, sang it with Soul and the results were quite pleasant surprisingly. Miss Savage recorded the definitive version of this song IMO. |

As usual Rodmann, you beat to the punch:o) I was just about to mention Chantay's version of this song, which as you said is the definitive version. Juice, forgive me, did you ever send me your email address? Handsome |

Hi! Gladys Knight & the Pips did a great, slow version of I Will Survive on their Touch Album in 1981. She produced the song herself. Best regards Heikki |

Not sure what sexuality of djs has to do with it. So it shouldnt have been a hit but gay djs who____made it a hit-dont get it. It acutally crossed over hugely and became a million seller-nothing to do with gays or straights--tons of people loved it. When Miss Gaynor sang it last year on national tv everyone sang along. Whether u like it or not it actually describes the grief process quite well clinically and becomes a message of healing, strength and empowerment(listened to the lyrics?). Not sure why the hostility about the song. Songs are played by gay djs, black djs etc--music brings everyone together. |

No, No, No, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy! You don't get it. Before I go any further, let me ask you one question: were you involved in the Disco scene in 1979? What is your knowledge of the history of Disco? If you were around, you should understand. If you weren't, let me try to explain. If you recall, around 1976-'78, the European producers were in vogue. They wrote many songs from a womans perspective. Hence the Disco Divas such as Donna Summer, Carol Douglas, Gloria Gaynor, Andrea True, Silver Convention, Alicia Bridges, Yvonne Elliman, Vickie Sue Robinson, Carol Jiani, et.al. The Gay DJs who also related to this female point of view began spinning these ladies records, to the point of them becoming anthems. I Will Survive was picked up BIG TIME by Gay groups & advocates, as well as the Womens Rights advocates. Gay DJs played this song religiously & IWS gained it's popularity in that community first. From there, every other group picked up on it, as we all have been screwed over at one time or another. If you ever happen to read any of Ms Gaynors comments, she readily & freely credits the Gay community for their embracing of IWS. In fact, it was those very Gay Discos that accepted Ms Gaynor & made her a star. It's great that the song crossed over & it's great that people sing it everywhere. The fact of the matter is that the Gay Discos & DJs & whar gave this song its push. We're not bashing the song because of its origins. Do I know the lyrics??? I was a DJ, how could I not. My son was born in 1982 & he came out of his mothers womb singing that damn song!!!That's exactly why we're bashing it, that's why we despise it so much. We got sick of hearing the lyrics & we got sick of all of the psychobabble about how it changed peoples life. We bash it because it's boring, whiney & overblown. It's overly melodramatic. What we're saying about the message of the song is this: "Hey, stuff happens. Stop whining & bitching & get on with life!!!" People have loved & lost from the beginning of time. They didn't feel the need to write a song about it & neither did I. I don't see the song as a message of empowerment. It's a song about a woman who finally found the nerve to dump her crummy boyfriend. No more, no less. That millions of people needed a Disco song to empower them is kinda funny to me. If you need a Disco song to help straighten out your life......... Now let's be honest. When people went to Discos, they weren't dissecting the music from a clinicians point of view. They went to dance, drink or smoke a little, relax, enjoy themselves & if they were lucky, find a new friend to share some, shall we say, "quiet times" with. Then again, perhaps not so quiet, but I digress. Basically, that's all that we're saying. The song was simply overblown. For those who love it, I think it's great. For those of us who couldn't escape this record & suffered from apoplexy because of this song, it's merely catharsis |

Heikki...nice, I will check that out! Nice pic Wonder! It was a nice song, but I heard it too much around the way, trust me! Even my mum was singing it in the house to the point that we didn't need to put on the radio! LOL So melodramatic LOL! But, all I can do now is laugh about it! |

Jimmy, I didn't mean to offend anyone when I said what I said and I'm sorry if I did. I feel the same way that Juice does. It's common knowledge that 'I Will Survive' was embraced as an anthem by some gays AND women. I don't dislike the song for that reason though. I dislike it because I think it's soulless, watered down and overblown. Gloria is capable of much much more and it's sad IMO that this song has become her meal ticket! I could think of hundreds of songs that have nothing to do with Gays or women that I think are bad. I can dislike ANYTHING by ANYONE! LOL. |

I hear you Rodmann, but the fact of the matter is that this is fact, not fiction. A song can mean many things to many people & that's cool. In my opinion, had she made that song in any other era, we wouldn't be discussing its "greatness". It was a song that was released at a time when a lot of different things were happening socially. It became an anthem for the downtrodden & that was its basic appeal. It still doesn't erase it's evolution, or, it's origins. If Gloria Gaynor can admit this, why shouldn't I? Believe it or not, some folks still believe that YMCA is a song about a place where we played as kids I know that's what I thought back in 1977. (Message edited by Juicefree20 on April 30, 2004) |
