Due to a friend who thinks much of me and my distorted sense of humor,(thank you, thank you again!) I have recently acquired the recently released first season of In Living Color, and I must tell you 'it's a trip down memory lane'...I feel that if no other show other than 'Martin Lawrence' had comedic genius to it,(for the 90's) it was this show. I must say that the Wayans Brothers were destined for success in the creation of some of the characters.

Some of My Favorites:

Jim Carrey (who is Dick Van Dyke and Jerry Lewis rapped up in one): The Gay Activist in the 'Act-Up skits...'Vera' the transsexual with the horse laugh...I liked Fire Marshall Bill but it was disturbing to look at his face some times... lol...that man is 'tapped'...Also the kid who hated 'Pork and Beans'...lol...

Damon Wayans : HandiMan. You know if there was ever a take off on the Handicapped that could be deemed funny and you really did not want to laugh, this was it. What a sick sense of humor. Homey the Clown when he meets the MAN was funny...

David Alan Grier - he can make you laugh just looking at him. Brilliant comedian. Dwayne and Antione. Just Brilliant. 'Ten snaps up in letters forming SDF'. LOL.

The Caucasian Girl on the show that partnered mostly with Jim Carrey. I think her first name was Kelly or Cassie. She was another Lucille Ball in the making. Too funny. Loved the Lassie Go Home skit with the Rottweiler. LOL.

Well......next that show would definetly have
to be the Richard Pryor Show......a show that was way ahead of it's time.

Peace,

I meant to put in the 90's...my bad...yes, and the Richard Pryor show was another piece of classic work...for the 70's and 80's. (Note the added wording)

Thanks Chancellor!

I met Crystal Keymah from a few years back and she is more beautiful in person than on the screen. She has the most flawless, smoothest skin you've ever seen.

I agree Mike.

DyvaNaye,
I dug what Martin Lawrence did for Tyrone. I wish he would use Tyrone's character in an up and coming movie.

IN LIVING COLOR...I used to watch this like I HAD to! I lost interest after the 2nd season I think, but what a funny show! I tried to audition for the show, but found out it was taping in LA...I couldn't let mum know I wanted to do it...and I was still in high school! :-)

RICHARD PRYOR SHOW...I was watching one episode of this show while my relatives were over one night and my mum threw a fit and sent me to bed and couldn't understand why she did that...now I know! :-)

The last I knew about Crystal, she had moved back to Chicago to care for her ailing grandmother, but that was about a years ago. I haven't heard anything since. Her TV show starring Raven was in hiatus.

For me, In Living Color was a "must see" every Sunday night. No one has mentioned ILC alum Tommy Davidson. He is so under-rated as a comedian that it's pathetic. I saw his stand up act a couple of years ago, and this cat is hilarious.

DyvaNaye...I beg to disagree with you on Martin Lawrence. He couldn't make me laugh if he put a gun to my head.

I never missed that show!!Homey the Clown was my favorite. If you've ever dealt with a smartmouth kid,you can relate to him.

My other favorite was the lady in rollers that would smile and gush over someone walking by them, then just cut them to ribbons after they walked on by. Then she would say=NOW I AINT ONE TO GOSSIP,SO YOU AINT HEARD THAT FROM ME!!!

Lynn,

That was Kim Wayans as the 'Window Monitor' who was the neighborhood gossip. Funny enough, that saying became a classic in the 'hood amongst middle aged African Americans...who make up most of that type of terminology.

Gary:

Tommy Davidson is a very funny comedian who I always thought should have his own TV program or talk show...his delivery and speech are well recieved in film and in stand up from what I noticed.

As far as Martin is concerned...well, 'to each his own'...you dont have to beg to disagree, it is your opinion. Martin 'does it' for some and for some he dont...but he 'does it' for me an many I know. His comedic timing and paring with Tisha Campbell was brilliant. He 'took it to the hood' in an acceptable way, making note to characters we all in African American communiites can relate to,in one way or another. In my opinion, it was 'I LOVE LUCY with a twist of 'color'.

Peace,
DyvaNaye

One of the best shows EVER! It put SNL to shame.
But the suits wouldn't allow artistic freedom and kept censoring what Keenan Wayons wanted to do so he closed it up. Too bad. It was a great show.

DyvaNaye. Where did you get it? Adn can it be purchased? If I can't buy it, I would gladly send you the money if you could make a copy and mail it to me, plus of course a little extra for your time :-)

In Living Color was simply the most cutting edge comedy show since SNL. I would include Richard Pryor's Show, but NBCs censors effectively spayed & neutered the show. It was quite fitting when Richard walked out with no genitalia, as it was most symbolic of what NBC did to his show.

As for Martin, his show was one of the funniest. The last two seasons after his troubles with Ms Campbell came to light, was a bit so-so. Before that, his show was just hilarious & pretty down to earth. I felt the characters were realistic.

We all knew someone like Tommy, always talking about a job that no one else seemed to know about. We all knew a Cole, who always returned home. We all knew Pam, who never seemed to have a man of her own. We all knew someone like Martin who had a great big mouth & acted like he could been the world.

Who didn't know a fake player like Tyrone? The hood was full of these brothers who still had their Superfly rap & clothes in their closets. We all knew a sassy, somewhat horny old lady like MS Gerri. Then there's Otis, the elderly guard that thinks he's really a cop, who dispenses old school knowledge to the young'uns..."It's cheaper to keep'r, it's cheaper to keep'r dere boy". He's an old player who seems to luck out with the slightly tipsy ladies...."Got her sprung dere boyyyyy".

Lastly, everybody knows YoYo & Sheneneh & what about the gay guy who calls Martin "Chocolatey Almond such a little piece of leather, so well put together."

Martin was a slice of real life humor & if you've ever lived in the hood, you know them well. Some of them were even your relatives. Yes, sometimes, he could be a little over the top. Sometimes he could be preposterous. More often than not, he was spot on right.

In Living Color was brilliant and a refresing slice of television. The cast and the writing was stellar! I'm amazed how the comedy and the skits have held up after all of this time.

My only beef was Kim Coles got no play on cover of the recent packaging of In Living Color-Season 1. She was nowhere to be seen. If I do recall she stepped away from the show on not the best of terms, but that's no reason to slight her contributon to the show. She was great!

Juice: Martin was the 'ish'....The character of Jerome kept me and my daughter on the floor...my daughter can do that whole skit verbatim when he tried to sell Pam and Gina bogus tickets to a show and the cops came and he ran off...that run was priceless...lol...
Also Otis the janitor...with those 'bottom of a coca-cola bottle for glasses'...there is a guy in my neighborhood who looks just like that...and I just cry every time I see him...LOL...
What about the Karate instructor...Martin was ILL!

Kim Coles is a BRILLIANT comidienne...she appears on Kiss-Fm every now and again becaues he is friends with Talent...she had funny parts on ILC like the one about 'Go-On Girl'..when she and Kim Wayans discovered their independence issues were rapped around the same man...lol...funny stuff...

GOAT: 'Po as I is' this week...LOL...I would except your offer however I would never charge...it was a gift to me and I would do the same. It should be available, however at a Best Buy, Circuit City or Tower. If you have trouble getting it, write me at THENAYESKI@AOL.COM

Peace,

Juice! LOL...
Do you remember the episode when COLE was coming on to big Shirley and that BIG HAND was in the camera...?! OH MY LORD I CRIED BEHIND THAT, and it is striking me funny right now! LOL.
COLE licked her hand as she was eating BBQ chicken...it was 'turning him on' to see her 'get off on eating'...HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!!!
That hand belonged to 'Big Boy' of the defunct VIBE SHOW fame with SINBAD.

I think Im gonna watch some Martin reruns tonight...got most of them on tape. And I LOVE 'The Players Ball' episode 'I paid the cost to be boss...' LOL!

Dyva, I edited about 7 tapes worth of Martin shows. I hope to re-record all of them on my computer, so I can get better copies & burn them to DVD.

I remember both episodes. What about the one where Cole was clipping his toenails & one ricocheted & hit Gina on the forehead?

knocked her out! My daughter rolls on that one!

Ghetto Humor to the 10th power!!!!!!! Gina was/is one of the most brilliant character actresses around...she is underrated and all other talent does not show on that Damon Wayans program...she is a 'Black Lucille Ball' to me.

Another episode that damn near put me in an ambulance was the episode of 'gilligans island' whe nthey went to this secluded getaway and that beaver attacked them...PAM stole the whole scene. Almost hurt myself on that one. LOL.

I was delivering groceries for a north suburban local grocery store. I distictly remember danm near freezing so I went out and got a Chicago Bears winter hat. At various times during the day, I would return to the store and pick up more deliveries. I drove an old Chevy van that was the companies and was literily duct taped together in spots. Upon my return to the store I would remove my hat from my head, put the gloves inside the hat and imitate "Homey The Clown." My fellow employees who were familiar with the I.L.C. could hardly "contain" themseles, I hadn't thought about that in years. Thanks for bringing back those fun memories.
