Hello Chancellor. Easy ... "TEMPTIN' TEMPTATIONS" It has beauties like "Since I Lost My Baby" and "The Girls Alright With Me" on it. Although I don't think that it was conceived as an L.P. like "Cloud Nine" and their later Motown material, as some of the material was a couple of years old. Of the later ("Cloud Nine" and after) material, I would choose "Masterpiece". Roger P.S. I know its not a TEMPTATIONS L.P. but am I allowed to sneak in a mention for a DAVID RUFFIN solo L.P. ... "Everythings Coming Up Love" ... a totally faultless collection IMO.

60's... I do have a soft spot for 'With A Lot Of Soul' 1967..Ruff at his best 70's...'Cloud Nine' or 'Sky's The Limit'...Dennis taking the reins.. After Ali Woodoson left the Temps.. nothing to separate them from any other vocal group. Dennis's version today is what the Tempts should be.. and David Sea is awesome live. Don, Is Reunion really one of your favorites, or does it express your hopes and dreams? I once said that just hearing the Temptations harmonize and sing was enough. I've been listening to male vocal groups this past week to see if any could come up to "my" Temptations, but, of course, none did. The Tempts had so many different sounds, different approaches that they didn't sound the same on every record. And all too often these other groups did. I particularly love the songs that I think of as "ensemble songs" where all five have "leads" at various times. That's what makes the Tempts unique. (Message edited by janebse on April 19, 2004) |

Janebse, Yes there 1982 lp was a favorite. A friendly debate is too lengthly right now, cause I'm not up to pair, maybe I'll have a better explanation a little later but not now. Though Dennis's Temptation Revue are the best in my book of what they use to sound, c'mon let's be honest. Have you heard of their single "God Bless America" yet? Gives me goosebumps when I hear it. Everyone thought Marin Gaye's redition of the american nation athem was somethin'. However I rank "God Bless America" as one of the best performances Dennis & TR has recorded onto record. |

Hi Janebse, The Tempts we're good at what they knew how to do, but they weren't the only ones, Not taking taking anything from them-they we're good. There are groups you might like to check out, some might be popular, some might be consider obscure that don't just harmonize a certain way all the time like The Vibrations out of LA and The Vows/Majors/Major IV out of Chi Town and The Fantastic 4 out of Detroit. Those are my top pick choices for the time being. Friends Of Destinction and The Fifth Dimentions are pop though are very soul underneath Janebse. |

The Reunion LP had some standout tracks, most notably Standing On The Top, and I've Never Been To Me. Dennis sings that with such emotion that it blows away the original rendition, which was done by a female artist whose name escapes me at the moment. I also like A Song For You, Masterpiece, and from the Ali Woodson years, To Be Continued, which just happens to be one of my favorite LP's from ANYONE. Lady Soul, Someone(To Come To My Rescue), A Fine Mess, Message To The World, and the title track, To Be Continued, make this a very underrated LP in the Temptations discography. If you're not familiar with it, check it out. Jim |

Are you kidding???!!! Not mentioning "To Be Continued" would be a crime! Actually it was the first album I ever bought by Temptations back in 86 and I still love it to this day. Also the "Power" LP is a real disco masterpiece. It even has "Isn't The Night Fantastic" on it, I cannot tire of that song! |

Sorry SD'ers, I did mention once before in a past thread that Truly For You and To Be Continued are my fav's too. Sorry if I may have gotten a couple of titles mixed up. Parton. Hello Janebse, Also you may want to listen to records also by Little Anthony & the Imperials , The Persuations and Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers. The difference from the 50's and 60's was the harmonizing factor, and the changing of the times. |

I left out Gladys Knight & The Pips. Believe me, they didn't have Maurice King, Clarence Paul and Beans Bowles working with them for nothing. And believe you me, the Tempts we're paying attention, most and importantly so did Mr. Gordy- he knew and Mr. Stubbs. |

Favorite Tempts' album - SKY'S THE LIMIT (1971) for IMHO it captured the group at the peak of their vocal powers. "Sky's The Limit" also be called "The Unofficial Eddie Kendricks Debut Solo Album" because of his singing lead on three main tracks - "Gonna Keep On Trying (Til I Win Your Love)", "Smiling Faces Sometimes" and the classic "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)". It was also the last album to capture Paul Williams before his sad demise. Kudos to Paul Riser, David Van De Pitte & Jerry Long for the lush arrangements and the Funks for great studio finesse. Props as well to Norman Whitifield and songwriting partner Barret Strong. Kevin Goins - KevGo

Th Temptations produced by Thom Bell. Came out in the Summer of 1981. It wasn't one of their more popular albums but I liked it a lot. "Aiming At Your Heart" and Melvin's lead on "What Else" were my favorites. The line-up then was Otis,Melvin,Dennis,Richard, and Glenn. |

Thats the album with Melvin Franklin wearing a superman t-shirt right? I do have it but haven't really listened to it that much. Song titles like "The Life Of A Cowboy" scared me away, I guess. Now I may even give it a spin again. |

Greg, I became a "DIE HARD" Temptations fan when "The Way You Do The Things You Do" was released. I owned almost all of the recordings that were released by them up till their lp "Glass House" lp. I guess that was about the time the group was making a transition. As I look back over the years not really being familiar with the artists that filled in each time a member left the group, I can now appreciate what each member of any lineup of the Temptations brought to the group. They all were all great. I Just happened to picked up the '81 & Gordy lp as well as the '85 Gordy lp "Touch Me" with the lineup of Ollie Woodson, Damon Harris, Richard Street, Melvin and Otis. Both lps I've never listened to in its entirity and don't think I'll be disappointed with either one of them when I hear them. |
