Do the moderators of this fine site have an idea of where the members reside, percentage-wise? I absolutely revel in the idea that people all over feel so strongly about my city's music, no matter what the genre. Think about it: Motown, punk rock(it started here, baby!), neo-garage, and a whole lot of bands and artists outside of those categories. I'm sure it has been all discussed before and I'm sorry for dragging up what must be common knowledge to you all but where are you good people from?

Hi Brian,
I'm from London, England, and could not live anywhere else.
Although I love to travel, there is no place like London for music. Multi-cultural diversity at it's finest. All genres, all styles, old and new. Not to mention some of the most exciting radio in the world.

Hey I'm in France but I'd love to live where Brian lives! LOL LOndon is the place to be for this musical diversity he mentions, and more than that for the amazing records I find there every time I cross the Channel, and even more so for the endless list of weekly concerts which make me drool every time I look the concert page of all the british music mags... all the great acts that I love play there (talking about soul jazz & funk artists from the 60's/70's)

Well, I'm from Lincoln in the East Midlands of England and - as a Manchester boy - I'd like to add a small disclaimer... Despite what the Southerners may claim, there is intelligent life outside of London. Let's be honest - "Northern Soul" wasn't given that name for nothing! ;o)

I'm from just outside London, and have recently discovered that one of the other regular forum contributors, John Lester, is the brother of my old school friend Paul.

Yes Ritchie, I didn't want to sound like I only knew London and that I didn't think there was music outside of the Capital city, LOL, but it's easier for us continentals to travel there for a concert and come back home in a short lap of time...
Although I have always wanted (it WILL happen eventually) to go to those mythical places I have read about since the early 70's...

Last week, I was a clueless Yank stumbling around London (this week, I'm equally clueless, but back home stumbling around Detroit). One night, I noticed a sign for the "Detroit Bar and Restaurant" (www.detroit-bar.com). I figured this must be the gateway to the Northern Soul stuff I'd heard so much about, but was very disappointed to see that it was just a trendy nite spot that had nothing to do with R&B, or anything else I was remotely interested in.

Saving grace: I found Moles Jazz shop near King's Cross the next day.

I split my time in Den Haag, Netherlands (home), Muenchen, Germany (animation studio) and Los Angeles USA (attending animation school). I'm in L.A. now, but will leave for Holland in a few weeks. I grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, and later, Chicago (with a little bit of The Netherlands thrown in. I also spent a lot of time in the Manchester area of England in the '70s.

Born in Detroit, raised in Inkster, now live in Dearborn,Michigan.I was on the road for almost ten years playing music and then played music at night in Detroit and worked for an airline as a day job.So I've seen a lot of the world in my travels. No matter where you live you want to visit other places. But it's always nice to come back home.
Last week I took my 11 year old grandson down to Motown on Grand blvd.In the recording studio they asked for five people to stand in the same spot where the temps recorded "My Girl".Then they showed them how to do the temptaion walk..They had them each sing a part from"My Girl",he had the high answering part. I told him that for the rest of his life, whenever he hears "My Girl" he can say he was there and sang it just like they did in the same spot!!!
(Well, maybe not exactly like the Temps.LOL

Hello Everyone.

Brian, I guess that if David can't reply to your question about the percentages of people in various places then no-one can.

Personally I have lived in the U.K. (excepting holidays and a few business trips) all my life .. Leicester, Sheffield, Bangor (North Wales) and for the last 15 years in the North Eastern reaches of London.

The only parts of the U.S.A I've been to are NYC and LA. I actually flew over Detroit 18 months ago on a flight from LA. to London .. its directly under the flight path. Unfortunately it was dark and cloudy, so I didn't see anything.

Hi Wonder B. No, I won't be able to go To The NorthSea Jazz Festival (although I've been to it before). At the beginning of July I'll be going to Muenchen to work 14 hours a day -6 days a week on an animation project. I won't return to Den Haag until the beginning of September. I'm jealous of those who will be there. I've also been to the jazz festival in Copenhagen a few times.

Hi my nickname is Juicefree. I live in Brooklyn, N.Y. A lifelong New Yorker who this wonderful Soulful Detroit family has embraced. I've learned quite a bit about music here. I knew certain basics, but there are many people here who actually sang, played, produced, wrote or engineered much of the music that we love.

If anyone had told me that I'd be speaking with folks such as Bobby Eli, Dennis Coffey, Caesar of the Tymes, Charles Ingersoll of the Younghearts, Ralph of the Sunliners, I'd have told them that they're crazy. But, they're right here, giving us the benefit of their first hand knowledge.

There are a lot of fun people here & I'm sure that you'll enjoy your stay.

Peace
Juice

It seems we have one large group of members who are lifetime Detroiters; then, another large group of Detroiters who now live elsewhere in USA; then, a large group of Motown/Detroit Music/General Soul Music fans ascattered throughout USA; and a fair-sized group of folks of a similar ilk in and who are also Northern Soul fans in U.K.(one currently located in Taiwan); a few of a similar sort in The Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Canada, one or two in South America and one in Africa? As to the percentages, -no one will ever be able to get an exact current reading, as a few leave every once in a while (but might be back), and others are joining all the time. I'd say as a rough guess, much more than half the posts are made by people located in USA, next would be UK. Spain and France have a decent percentage as Manny and Wonder B. Make a lot of posts. If Lars starts posting a lot again, Scandinavia will be well represented. I'm surprised there aren't more Asians, Africans and South Americans, and no Australians on this forum.

WonderB,
I know whacha mean. I feel the same way every time I look through the back of the English mags or N.Y.'s Village Voice. For as influential as Detroit has been, a lot of touring acts pass right on by and don't even wave.
SteveS,
You wouldn't be Steve Shaw, wouldja?
DouglasM,
I grew up in northwest Detroit, right near where Fenkell and Grand River cross overtop of the Southfield Freeway. Catholic Central class of '79, by the way.
Tsaneladi,
Yeah, I'm a huge Mutants fan living in Royal Oak. The Mutants' guitarist/organist lives in bluerhythmbass' neighborhood.
Thanks everyone for your warm responses. I figured most were from either England or DTown, though I was curious about the rest of ya as well.

Born in Detroit and stranded in Mannheim, Germany
(to give you an idea, that's just ten minutes away from Heidelberg!).

Mannheim has currently established the first pop music academy in Germany and hence a vital music scene.

There's currently a very interesting exhibition about the electric guitar in our Museum of Technics, if somebody is intersted take a look
at www.stromgitarren.de (also featured in english)

I have lived in South Carolina near the coast all my life and in Charleston about 20 years. I just can't imagine not living near the water. For the past four years I've lived right on a tidal creek--sweet!

Charleston, of course, is the birthplace of James Jamerson.

Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario Canada. But wish I could move across the river to Detroit. But I guess I'm almost there...I can look through my front parlour window and see the beautiful skyline.

Goat - I used to live in Windsor during the late 90s... DJed at the Press Club, which is now gone. Chrysler's HQ stands on the block. The view from the turntables was amazing - Detroit's skyline at night as I played 100% 60's Detroit Soul. Shame nobody else came to listen and enjoy!

I spent most of those years in Detroit.

Although I was born in Cardiff, Wales, I was brought up in Lincoln, where Ritchie now lives. I've been in Taiwan since 1999.

Accolcat. The Press Club moved from that block over to Goyeau and Riverside Dr. Unfortunately, attendance slipped (a nice parking lot was next to it so no foot traffic)and they had to close.

Thanks for the kind words Brian T. But I am a big Ottawa Senators fan (Detroit my 2nd fave) :-(

I did go to the new Press Club; a smarter looking place which I think lacked the homeliness and casual ambiance of its former location. The original was never really busy, which is what I liked about it.

I'll probably be lambasted for going even further off-topic, but why did you pick the name "GOAT"?

also, I 'm not as pessimistic. I believe both sides don't want to bring The NHL to financial ruin, and will get together with at least 40 games left, to salvage the season and playoffs. They'll have a phased-in solution, which will be flexible to adapt to unforseen problems. No one wants to lose more Canadian teams.

Ritchie-The Executive Consultant on "The Simpsons", Brad Bird, gets the last look at the weekly scripts, and approves, or doesn't approve it. He sends it back with comments and recommendations to the director. Sometimes the changes are made. When I was working on "Iron Giant", we saw The Simpsons script delivered to Bird each week, and saw the courier pick it up when he finished. As far as what other Executive Consultants on other programmes, that probably varies from what Bird does, to doing nothing, and just having their name their name attached to the show for prestige.

Ritchie-I'm not sure that "Executive Consultant" means the same thing as Script Editor. The Simpsons had A Script Editor, who saw the script before Brad. He was just a Consultant on the side, not a member of the Studio team. He was with us at WB Feature Animaton. The TV Show Team was at Film Roman Studios. He was just a last pass look for an independent, educated view of things. An executive consultant is just someone who "consults" e-g makes suggestions. The Editor and Director have the final SAY, Consultant just makes suggestions.

OK, in British TV a script editor is employed (usually on a long-running series) to vet scripts commissioned from freelance writers, who may not have an intimate knowledge of the characters or their relationships. He or she usually edits the script in tandem with the producer, before it's passed to the director as a fait accompli. Of course, the actors often add their own 'fine tuning' to the dialogue. :-)

BTW, I used to work on a famous British soap, and the programme's script editor was actually a fan who was asked to join the production team after constantly sending letters pointing out in-story continuity errors. He knew the programme better than its makers, so they gave him a job!

Hey Juice;
I'd love too but Jimmy wants no more parts of NY or NJ, too many bad memories, I guess. But we both agree on the climate of LA, if its meant to be we'll be moving there sometime in the future. A coast is the only place to be for me :-) and if in showbusiness like Jimmy, it needs to be based in either NY or LA, for if not.. there are alot of missed opportunities that just happen to come up aside from the regular bookings. We have good connections in LA but are out of the loop living here.

Hi all,

What a great mix of geographic areas - I was born in Burley, Idaho, grew up in Ogden and Salt Lake City Utah, then moved to the Los Angeles area - I now reside in Torrance, CA which is oh I'd say about 15 miles south of LA city, and about 4 miles east of the Pacific Ocean.

I flew to Detroit this past February for the "Live with Levi" tribute, and while I didn't get to see a lot of Detroit, I did get to the Roostertail and the Hitsville museum. I stayed at the St. Regis Hotel. I will definitely go back there one day for a nice long tourist visit. The architecture was stupendous - lots of older buildings that I found to be fascinating - LA (downtown) is a lot of new, ugly skyscrapers with lots of glass. Because of the earthquakes (I guess), we don't have the kinds of buildings I saw.

The person who is going to Detroit this summer - the HItsville museum tour is great!! I was so amazed - because the house/museum is so tiny!!! The museum is just about 4 or 5 blocks from the St. Regis (albeit long blocks)!!

I just love Detroit - and if I didn't have family out here, and the winters weren't so icy cold, I'd probably move there.

Margie

PS - I forgot the most important point of all - the people are all so nice and gracious!!

Hello, soulful brothers & sisters!

Geographically, i lives in Valls, Tarragona province (Catalonia, Spain). This is at 20 km from the Mediterranean Coast (famous Costa Daurada of Salou). My town is the origin of famous human towers and the "calotada" (green onions with almonds "salsa"). Also i have lived seven years in Barcelona, where during two years I studed Geological Sciences and after changed to Graphic Design (five years more); the last two years i go to Barcelona and returned to my town everyday for work reasons.
Psychologically i lives sometimes on Mars and virtually, since september 2003, in the virtual country called Soulful Detroit.

Hey, Soulaholic, i think i can recognize this street, the principal street of the oldier part of my town "La Cort" street, I lives very next. Some soul and Philly recordings (in fact the first) i buy in a today closed music store in a little street, "Peixateria" street, perpendicular to this and very next to the place of the photo (called "Stereo Disc"). Here I buy "Ship Ahoy" in Lp and "Drama V" in cassette and many more. I passing trough this street everyday!
Thanks for this very emotive surprise, friend!
This pick is from the human towers at the "Blat" square, at the extreme of "La Cort" street.image{castell.jpg}

Hey, dear Miss Scott,
Hope you have a good weekend.
Nice words by you (as allways) that honored Catalonia and spanish people. Thanks. I can say the same of some north americans i knows as you and all the SDF family. If you go to Catalonia at the end of summer or autumn is when the human towers are most interesant (special human towers "performances" of Saint Felix in Vilafranca in september and Santa Ursula in october in Valls where can see the highest towers!).

Best Regards
Peace & Soul Food!

As most of you may already know I'm from "The Big Easy", better known to you as New Orleans, Louisiana where Cajun and old school are among the music played here. And around this time of year, there are more mudbugs in the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ponchatrain than anywhere, and people are having crawfish boils every weekend. I love this state.

BTW, mudbugs are another name for crawfish.

Hi!

Finland hasn't been mentioned yet, and there are at least two listees. As you know this country is next to North Corea.

Best regards

Heikki, are you male or female? We have the name Heike in Germany for girls, so I'm used to that. But I saw Mel address you as "mate", so I assume you are a fellow (but not sure). Not that it matters, but I'm just curious. I've been to Finland a few times. My brother lived in Olou for a few years. He's based in Stockholm, but works for a Scandinavian tour company that runs tours all over Finland and the Baltic countries. I have some pen friends in Turku,Vaasa,Tampere, Helsinki, and on Ahvenanmaa. Whereabouts are you located?

Hi Robb_K!

Nice to hear from you.
I'm a male and its funny that my name is taken for a female in many European countries, U.S.A and also in Russia. You can call me Henry, it's of the same root.

I'm living in Espoo, about 15 kilometres from Helsinki.
Please give me your mailing address, and I'll send you a copy of the more soulful side of Finland.

Best regards
Heikki

Hej Heikki,
My e-mail address is <robbklein@yahoo.com>. I will be coming to Sweden in late June, but, unfortunately, I won't have time to visit Finland. But, perhaps next year, I can take the ferry across. I have a lot of friends to see. I go to Southern Sweden every year for work, so I'm sure within the next 3 years I will come to Finland. I will come to Helsinki to visit Akku Anka, as they print many of my Akku Anka(Donald Duck) stories. If I do plan a trip there, I will let you know. Send me an e-mail, and we can continue this conversation, as I am very much off-topic already.
