I sure hope whatever their rift was/is, that they mend it. Life is short and they've both had their share of heartache and tragedy. All in all, a great show. Patti's performance was right up there with her best ever on TV. She came across perfectly Patti. I knew Cindy Lauper had soul, but didn't know just how much! I hope Ashanti and Jessica took notes. Someday when they grow up ... |

Yes I agree and Miss Joss needs to hike up her pants a bit-distracting-her voice is good enuff to cool the Britney stuff. The single best concert moment I have her seen in person was Patti and Cyndi singing the John Lennon song Imagine. Talk about CHILLS. (Message edited by luke on April 18, 2004) |

If all of these ladies are Divas, including those that they've named, please don't call Aretha a Diva. Aretha is a Queen. |

Sorry SisDetroit but (at the risk of being lynched! LOL) I rate Gladys over any other female singer... I just love the woman's voice and repertoire... She's the epitomy of what soul means to me... It's all a matter of personal taste I guess! Wonder B |

My two favorite moments were Patti and Cyndi singing Time After Time and the incredible Gladys Knight singing The Way We Were. Gladys is still so beautiful and in these days were "screaming" is extolled, knows how to put across a song with musicality and intelligence with half the range of the other dolls. Joss Stone is only 17 and seems to have the inner soul of someone far older. Give her a chance, she is a winner. I like the combination of Janis Joplin, Aretha, and Tina in her voice. Jessica Simpson: good voice but tries waaaaaay to hard. However, boy she easy on the eyes. That first dress was a knockout. Ashanti: Sounded better than I have ever heard her singing Diana Ross' I'm Coming Out, but that is not saying much. Let's face it, she is a package. Sort of the Afro-American answer to Britany Spears. I could have done without those Fredericks of Hollywood dressed Pussycat girls (or whatever the hell they were called), they messed up Tom Jones's song. What were they doing on a Diva's show? Patti Labelle: I love this lady. However, there are times I have problems with her (I know I will be attacked for say this, but this is a forum for discussion). When she is truly connected to a song there is absolutely nothing more wonderful and you can forgive the forays into sharpness on some of her wail notes. However, if she is not totally connected the singing can come off over the top and a bit grating. I felt she was somewhere in between being connected and not being connected last night. I was only really moved during Time After Time. To be honest, I tend to like Patti more when she is being quiet and intimate or doing a rousing up-tempo like "New Attitude." |

Wonder B - Why would anyone lynch you just because you have an opinion? You have your likes and dislikes. That's what makes you special. You are entitled to that. In fact, last night, I'm sure everyone rated Gladys Knight heads and tails above anyone else on that "Anybody can be a Diva show." The ladies are not in the league with the great Gladys Knight. So, don't apologize for telling the truth. Aretha is my girl, and Gladys is right next to her. (Message edited by sis on April 19, 2004) |

I was surprised at how little Gladys time we got from the show. But what she gave us was choice. She sang "The Way We Were" in such a beautifully controlled, legato fashion. And on "I Don't Want To Do Wrong" her voice sounded better than it did in '68 (when the song was reportedly recorded). When Gladys pleaded "I don't wanna do what my heeeart is tellin' me to" and Joss Stone called out "Don't do it, Gladys!"--that was soul to me. |

Don't worry SisDetroit, I made that remark because everywhere I go people mention Aretha as the Queen of Soul (and she sure is one of the top 2 :o) but I rate Gladys on the same level at least but she's not always mentioned in the same league (or maybe I am too biased and don't think people give her enough love!) Gladys send chills down my spine everytime... she could sing the yellow pages for all I care, and she would still achieve the same result! LOL She's such a classy lady... I loved her even more after reading her autobiography... her life was everything but smooth... Wonder B |

Patti Kicked ass to me,especially on her new song and her medley of "Love Need and Want You" and If Only Knew, and Walk On !I thought her singing with Cyndi was my least favorite because she held back giving Cyndi the respect on singing her song .Gladys did sound good tho!Shawn |

SisDetroit, that cracks me up "Anybody Can Be A Diva Show"...so true, the term now has been reduced to being meaningless.I love Patti but sometimes when she is really "soulin'" if you are not familiar with the song, you can't understand the lyric....listin to Dee Dee Sharp "soulin'" and even if you don't know the song...you WILL understand the lyrics. |

While it's easy to dismiss Joss Stone you gotta give the girl her props for aligning herself with several of the old TK label artists (Betty Wright, Latimore, Gwen McCrae and Clarence Reid) and working with them on her album. I haven't heard her CD yet but I'm anxious to find out if they were able to recreate that "Miami Sound" on her new album THE SOUL SESSIONS. I don't think that there's anything special about Miss Stone's voice (hopefully she'll get better) but I'm a fan of hers simply because of the Miami connection! She's even taken all of those artists on tour with her! It's amazing how today's young African-American "artists" can make it to the top of the music biz with little or no musical talent, without ever looking back to throw the classic Soul artists that they sample and horribly try to mimic a single bone! BUT it took a 16 year old girl from Dover, England named Joss Stone to finally go back and give some props to those wonderful Miami artists. Go figure!

Thanks for that info Rodmann as I will take a look at her CD the next time I'm at a music store. Is she any relation to Henry Stone?I am grateful to anyone who acknowledges and especially gets work for the ex TK artists.I wonder how the connection came about. |

If I wasn't for Patti and Gladys, I would give this DIVAS show a four out of ten. I was glad that Patti had many moments to shine. I wasn't too thrilled with her duet with Cyndi on TIME AFTER TIME. It seemed they got off to a rocky start, and never quite recovered. A shame, considering that they performed it once before back in '85, and tore the song up. But to me, the best Patti moment was YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE. After that, all of the other "divas" (except Gladys) could have gone home because the performance of the night had been given. On the other hand, I was sad to see that Gladys got so little airtime, and had to share most of it. But as always, Gladys was great. I particularly enjoyed what she and Joss Stone did with I DON'T WANT TO DO WRONG. She and Joss were just getting ready to heat things up, when the song ended. I was surprised to see that Gladys wasn't in the finale. At first, I thought maybe she had to rush to her own Vegas show. But I believe she has Sundays off. As far as a Gladys/Patti feud, I've never heard of that. At one point, Patti had a few disagreements with Dionne, and wrote about them in her book. Gladys didn't approve of that and told Patti so. But all three are still friends. |

I find it odd Gladys wasnt in the finale and Jet mag. said she and Patti"were re-uniting on Divas Live"yet they never sang or appeared together. Thats too odd to be just a coincidence I feel. |

Hey Tony, I don't think that Joss Stone is any relation to Henry because she's British and was born in Dover, England. The last name is a hell of a coincidence though! LOL. |
