Bobby Dobyne was in the Artistics and recorded as Robert Dobyne on Kama Sutra, 'Can't get along without you' (also by Maxine Brown). The label for Bobby Paris is Chattahoochee. The Manhattens test press is in my collection...scan on my site. The other test copies you mention were all released...fingers crossed they may be different takes though! ;-) Randee 114...can't recall (Joyce Kennedy?), but do love that Adventurers track 'The Ubangi' on the label! ;-)

Hi Mel, that Bobby Paris record isn't on Chat - the full name of the label is Chattahoochee. It's the same singer who did "Night Owl" on Cameo and had other releases on Capitol. He was from Los Angeles where Chattahoochee was based. Wally Cox was a Bay Area singer (Oakland,California) - he had around half a dozen singles released in the sixties. Bar Car - yes , that's Barbara Carr's label - all late seventies/eighties releases. The Icemen were from somewhere New York State - they might be a pseudonym for the Poindexter Brothers. Cookie Scott's a Chicago record - Greg Perry of Invictus/Hot Wax fame worked on one of her singles. I'm a bit dubious about the details for that "Bobby Dobyne and the Bare Facts" track. Possibly a cover-up - "Soulful Sound Of Music" was, if I remember rightly, one of Bobby Freeman's Loma singles. Davie |

Ran-Dee 114 was NOT a Joyce Kennedy record. Hers were Ran-Dee 110, and 118. What Mel listed, Saxie Russell "Come Dance With Me" is likely correct, although I've never seen it. Bobby Freeman had "Soulful Sound Of Music" released on Loma 2056. It was written by Charles Jones and Robt. Dobyne. So, why is it unlikely that Bobby Dobyne (and the Bare Facts) wouldn't have released a record with him singing his own song? Dan Penn released a record of himself singing "I'm Your Puppet". I really doubt that a Brit Northern Soul DJ would "cover up" a Bobby Freeman song by claiming the artist is Robert Dobyne, as their voices are so VERY, VERY different. Everyone knows what Bobby Freeman's voice sounded like. Robert Dobyne's was much deeper, and he had much, much less range. BOTH of their voices are very recogniseable as their own. If I were going to "cover up" Freeman's song, I'd claim it was a voice much closer to his. I can't think of a good one to use off the top of my head, but just about any other male singer would have been a better match than Dobyne. |

With cover ups, Robb, it's not always to do with a 'similar voice'...a name of an artist with a similar sounding backing track, or to give a clue as to what label the cover up is really on, are often the case...those and just an elaborate fancy made-up one too! ;-) (There's a list of x400 'Classic NSoul cover-ups' on my site.) Anyone got a complete RanDee label discography to hand? |
