50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

I came across this Paul Simon track for the first time today and was struck by how much its style and lyrics sound like a certain Motown artist….!!!

But the question is, which one!!?

Shorty Long? Think “Function At The Junction” and “Here Comes The Judge “.

I have no idea who you mean, but the Jacksons sang this song every week on their TV show. Well, they(Jackie) sang one verse, for a gag. I quite like Jackie's timbre on it though; shame they never did the complete song.

that Paul Simon LP is excellent...I think Nick and Valerie are on the excellent cut HAVE A GOOD TIME....and maybe more....when Paul won his Grammy for album of the year, he said "I'd like to thank STEVIE WONDER for NOT releasing a album this year!"

I'm not sure who you're thinking of Tom, [good to see you!]
but without the "Andantes" joining in at times, that would be one boring vocal!

added: can Paul Simon really be proud of those lyrics? Did he perform the song much in later times??

He did it when I saw him on tour in Glasgow in 2018. Proud or not, he's someone who often talks about choosing words because of their rhythm more than what they mean so I doubt the lyrics are especially important unless you're talking about something like 'the Sound of Silence' or 'The Boxer.'

well I guess it beats the title 50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR WIFE ..... 'cause instead this is just a playful romp about about how men can casually dump some meaningless floozy they're bonking. Slip out the back jack ... or any ol' which way ... take your pick ...it doesn't matter ....just lovely!!
I am surprised his female fans would find it adorable.

IIRC he wrote the song to explain poetry to his son.

For me, it's the song that I often played inside my head when I was in a bad relationship that I needed to get out of. The lyrics gave me hope, although the truth is normally that it isn't that simple.

Additionally, I lived in a village with only one bus a day, which didn't help!

Can't hop on a bus, Gus.

    BINGO!!!!!!!!

Well, that’s what immediately came to my mind. Especially the…

"You just slip out the back, Jack
    Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
    Just get yourself free
    Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
    And get yourself free"

    … bit
