Earlier today, I went into my film library and pulled out and oldie. The 1962 film starred Chubby Checker as himself and featured The Dovells (with Len Barry), Linda Scott, Gene Chandler, Jimmy Carroll and Vic Dana. It wasn't a particularly great film, kind of the precursor to hip-hop films. Weak story line, but great performers. Chubby sang "The Fly" and a few other somewhat weak songs and did a duet with some cutie on "Slow Twistin'". The girl didn't really look like Dee Dee Sharp. She even flubbed some of the lyrics. Gene Chandler did "Duke Of Earl" complete with cape and monicle, Vic Dana did "Little Altar Boy" and The Dovells did "Bristol Stomp" and "The New Continental."

Here is my list of rock & roll films:

ROCK, ROCK, ROCK (1956)
with Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, Teddy Randazzo & The Chuckles, Chuck Berry, The Flamingos, The Moonglows & LaVern Baker

ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK (1956)
with Alan Freed, Bill Haley & His Comets, The Platters, The Ernie Freeman Combo & Freddie Bell & His Bellboys

DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK (1956)
with Alan Freed, Bill Haley & His Comets, Little Richard, The Treniers & Dave Appell & The Applejacks

THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT (1956) [the only color rock & roll film]
with Tom Ewell, Jayne Mansfield, Edmond O'Brien, Henry Jones, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Abbey Lincoln, Teddy Randazzo & The Chuckles, Julie London, Ray Anthony, Barry Gordon, Juanita Moore, Fats Domino, The Platters, Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps, The Treniers & Nino Tempo

with Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, The Coasters, The Five Satins, The Shirelles & Danny & The Juniors

A few years back, the AMC cable channel had a rock and roll weekend, and they showed many of the film listed above. High on my list to view was THE BIG TNT SHOW, produced by Phil Spector.

I knew it didn't look like her. If you ever noticed, there was an extra verse of the song in the film version and the girl who was lip-synching flubbed some of the lyrics. Whoever she was, she was fine, but she wasn't Dee Dee.

Yea, I always thought Chubby could have gone alot further as a mainstream entertainer at that time...his management kept him in that Twist bag too long.

Kal Mann told me he tried to push Chubby towards
the big night clubs and showrooms in Vegas,
the Copa, etc. Chubby wanted to keep doing the
big arenas to make more money, but both Bobby
Rydell and Dee Dee Sharp followed Kal's advice
and worked big showrooms for years after the
hits had stopped. Of course Chubby is doing
well these days, draws big everywhere.
