I checked out the link and IMHO it is somewhat skewed. First of all I do not consider James Jamerson a Rock Bassist. He was a Jazz and R&B Bassist, and secondly, James Jamerson did not play on Cool Jerk, Bob Babbitt played on Cool Jerk. |

Vonnie. thanks for correcting the "Cool Jerk" credit.....I don't understand how James Jamerson could be overlooked..."Bernadette" should be in the top 10!!! Bob Babbitt |

Mr. Babbitt brings up an interesting point, that is what defines "Rock". That is, are "Cool Jerk", "Dock Of The Bay", "Higher & Higher", "Rescue Me" and Marvin Gaye's version of "Grapevine" rock songs? I know we've had this arguement before with no satisfactory conclusion. |

Doug, I think Rock is, in this case, a synonym for Popular music Bass performances... I don't get bent out of shape over this, as it is someone elses honest opinion... But to borrow from Charise's logic, to say that James Jamerson is the greatest bassist of all times, and not list even one of his bass performances in the top ten of your lists(whomever is doing the listing)is ridiculous... I, also, realize that not everyone is on the same page as to whom the regard as the greatest basssist, or drummer, or saxophonist, of all time... Our tastes and the times alter a lot of people's opinions about these things, and that's cool too... Peace! Isaiah |

I have to say that Scorpio was definitely funky, but that guitar work was one of the foundations that has made good Rock music for years....THE GUITAR SOLO!!! As such, Dennis certainly belongs. I wonder how many of Dennis' licks were stolen from Rock bands in those days? I Heard It Through The Grapevine???? Rescue Me??? Cool Jerk???? Dock Of The Bay??? ROCK!!!! While they were at it, how did they miss naming Keni Burkes' performance on Risin' To The Top???? Who in hell made this list anyway, Sybil??? Sounds like they'd be better served redefining their understanding of muscial genres. Now, as far as James Jamerson being considered a GREAT ROCK BASSIST!!! POPPYCOCK!!! James Jamerson was as much a Rock bassist as a Dashiki is a Kilt. That's like calling Pavarotti a crooning lounge lizard!!! I love these expert critics!! Can't live with them......... |

Juice..... .....that's the arguement again. "What is rock" he asked. "Music played on rock radio" he answered, and all the songs listed qualify. But remember too, that lists like these tend to be made by "younger" folks who don't have the backround or knowledge of all musical genres (maybe not younger, but I qualify on the second part). Personally, I think "Let's Hang On" by the Four Seasons was an omission, but if my 30 year old son is not familiar with the song, I don't expect a 35 year old list editor steeped in "Classic Rock" to know it either. While we're at it, maybe we need a new genre definition thread. It would lead to some spirited arguem....er....discussion. doug |

Doug; Aye....there's the rub!!! I can't wait to readhis "Greatest Soul Singers" list. I'd like to hip him to a Soulful cat by the name of Al Jolson. After all, Al did perform while in Black face. I guess that he'd qualify for the list. Riddle me this:When is a critic not a critic??? When he/she has no fundamental ,grasp of knowledge of the material he/she is commenting on. So, by that logic, if Rock Program Directors decided to play Biggies Me & My B***h, it would officially be considered a ROCK record. Ridiculous & incredulous!!!! I didn't read the list, but I'm sure that they made space for Larry Grahams' performances on those Sly & The Family Stone classics, did they not. If not, I would guess that means that they're not playing Sly anymore!! |

Yes, he came in at #11 and then he is listed about 4 more times after that. I wouldn't bet the farm on that list. It is what it is. Just like the sexiest man alive on People or Us Magazine or when they announce it on tv, according to who?????? Not me, No one asked my opinion!! It kills me how people just make stuff up and then everyone else is supposed to get sucked in to believing it too, just because the media or one so-called group of people who sit around a desk drinking Perrier and Lattes say it is so! Whatever!!! Who gives a flying fig newton about utter nonsense. As Jamie used to say-Talk to the Hand!!!!!!!!!!! |

P-bass up the wazhoo? Ouch! The List - It's just one person's opinion of 100 great bass performances. It's just like what we do here...post a list & discussion follows. It's not a big deal. Actually I read a bunch of the comments. Funny stuff! I saw Bob Babbitt's post on the page! I wonder if the guy with the list (Eric) knows that the uncredited #11 guy posted on his list. it's just a bunch of cyberfun for bedroom bass players & music fans. |

Larry Graham did not play on "If You Want Me To Stay" as he had left to form Graham Central Station. The bassist on the track was Rusty Allen. Some of the Beatles bass credits were inaccurate as well. I'll research this and get back later. |

I think McCartney did play on the tracks as listed except for maybe Dear Prudence. George played a Jazz bass on some of the White album, for example "Birthday". Lists are for fun and this one seems cover a wide range of styles. I think the productive thing to do would be to check out some tracks which may be unfamiliar. |

What they should stop doing is putting every damn thing into neat little boxes. Why have a great ROCK BASS performance? As musicians respect musicians, how about simply calling it: "The best BASS performances, regardless of genre"?? That would leave plenty of wiggle room for all & would eliminate the urge to place square pegs into round circles. Seriously, I don't think that I want to see a list of Great Funk Bass performances, citing Pauls' dulcet tones on Hey Jude!! Somethings just don't fit, know what I mean |

Hey John c, I've got nothing that says that McCartney didn't play bass on Birthday. It was recorded in one day between two sessions, but I've got nothing that says George played bass on it. On the other hand, Paul did play bass AND drums on Dear Prudence. BTW, how could the list have Larry Graham on it and not have Thank You, the stand out track of Larry's career with The Family Stone? |

Hey Mike, Once upon a time in cyberspace there was a Sly & The Family Stone website that had an article about "Who played bass on the Fresh album?". Rusty, Larry, & Sly all had bass tracks on the album since it was recorded over a number of years. According to the article (in which Larry G. was cited), Sly probably played bass on "If You Want Me To Stay". The article & website are long gone though. Beatles - Photographic evidence shows that Paul had a lefty Fender Jazz Bass during the White Album & that George played a righty Jazz at times. (Along with the righty Fender VI six string bass as seen in the Let It Be movie). |

Chi, Here's an example of George's bass credit for Birthday. I've seen it a number of times but I can't remember where (my books are at home). I just located this with a search engine. I used to think it was Paul on the Rick. http://www.geocities.com/Sunse tStrip/Venue/8313/discography/ a_10.htm |

By virtue of his work with Sly, I would accept Larrys Rock work being included. However, I consider Jamerson a JAZZ/SOUL bassist & Bootsy a FUNK bassist. Then again, I'm not an expert critic, so what do I know??? |
