If the MTV Video Music Awards weren't proof enough, hip-hop is dominating pop music right now. And just because the VMAs have rolled out of town doesn't mean the party's over: Enter the Funkmaster Flex Celebrity Car and Bike Show, a blowout extravaganza that seeks to match the chrome and funky rims on display all over South Beach last weekend. And the bass will be booming as well: Many of the hip-hop stars who were here for VMA weekend have returned for the show (or maybe they never left). Hosted by ex-Fugee Wyclef Jean, the party features performances by Ludacris, Lil Jon, Trina, Elephant Man, Kevin Lyttle and Fat Joe, as well as Funkmaster Flex spinning jams behind the decks. And then there are the exotic custom rides, from foreign and domestic cars to tricked-out trucks and motorcycles. The fun begins at 2 p.m. Sunday and lasts till midnight at Bicentennial Park, 1075 Biscayne Blvd., Miami; 305-438-9488; $40, $100 VIP. Disco freaks unite! Put on your boogie shoes and get down to the Disco Divas Reunion Concert, hosted by 101.5 Lite FM and Miller's Gin at 9 tonight at the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino. The glittering show will take you back to the '70s with performances by France Joli (Come to Me), Anita Ward (Ring My Bell), Sister Sledge (We Are Family) and The First Ladies of Chic (Good Times, Le Freak). Tickets for the show -- broadcast live on 101.5 -- are $24 for general admission, $28 for floor seating and $36 for VIP up-close seating. The casino is at the northeast corner of U.S. 441 and Sample Road in Coconut Creek; 866-222-7486. Those who have heard Lgrimas Negras, the stunning new record pairing Bebo Valds and Diego El Cigala, will jump at the chance to see the unlikely duo perform at Miami Beach's Jackie Gleason Theater. The 85-year-old Valds, one of the true masters from the Golden Age of Cuban music, and El Cigala, known as ''the Sinatra of Flamenco,'' brought together two generations and traditions to create an album The New York Times called ''casually profound'' that ''sounds like nothing you've ever heard before,'' according to the Los Angeles Times. See what all the hype is about at 8 p.m. Thursday; the Gleason is at 1700 Washington Ave.; 305-673-7300; tickets are $41.50-$61.50. The Luna Star Cafe's the place to be for folk-music lovers this Saturday. The Folk Club of South Florida presents Gordon Robert Maddison, whose smooth vocals have enriched fresh renditions of of folk, Irish, Scottish and English ballads for more that 30 years. You're likely to hear selections from Maddison's latest CD, The Wind that Shakes the Corn, a collection of folk ballads from the British Isles, as well as original songs. Opening is the young but polished Hope Littwin. The show is at 8 p.m. Saturday; Luna Star is at 775 NE 125th St., North Miami; 305-892-8522; $7 ($6 members). Send concert tips, with complete information, no later than noon Tuesday to mhamersly@herald.com. Ticketmaster: 305-358-5885 in Miami-Dade; 954-523-3309 in Broward; and 561-966-3609 in Palm Beach. |
