I am taking a break from cleaning the house so I thought I would come here for a few minutes (ya right - I'm probably done for the night). I cannot clean unless I have music on and today I had the O'Jays playing and "Love Train" came on during the vacuuming time. I cannot dance but I sure did a number by bending, reaching, stretching (much like Elaine on Seinfeld when she danced to EWF) and then the "dumb/embarrasing musical moment" happened. I have a big picture window in my living room and the blinds were open and there were some people on the sidewalk just watching and smiling. I tried to play it off but no such luck so I just waved.

BEWARE!!! About 1 billion kids have been born due to soul/r+b music but we tend to shut the blinds for those time. PLEASE do the same if you vacuum and dance or any other embarrasing thing you might do when listening to music.

Almost like being on Candid Camera...(when we're at our best and innocent).
That was a good one.

Hi Charise -- I've had a few here and there, especially last weekend. But I'm trying to cram in as much outside as I can while summer is still with us! Tomorrow I'm off to see the 70s Soul Jam at the State Fair again (see my other post about Supremes and Tempts). It's Harold Melvin's Blue Notes, Stylistics, Intruders, and Main Ingredient. I love being on the go when the weather is nice; and I'm spending a lot of time in my garden. It's a relatively new hobby and it's wonderful. Hey, that's nice that ya missed me!! Thanks!

YOu Go Girl and have yourself a GOOD ole TIME at the fair and concert, as I'm sure you will post about it. I hear ya on getting out in the good weather, I need to do a little of that this weekend, as I seldom do, because I am chillin' after working all week!!! It has been HOT here and I know when that winter weather comes we will all be cryin' about "I'm Cold" Brrrrrr-LOL. It gets cold here to, but I've heard many a story about the Windy city and New York as well as other places. Chat cha, later:-):-)

Yeah Charise. Your winter weather in Oakland is similar to mine in Monterey. It gets down into the frigidly brutal 50s.

Yeah Ralph....but as beautiful (and romantic) as Monterey is...who cares !! There's nothing quite like being there when the fog rolls in and the only sounds you hear are the crashing waves, a few sea gulls, and a fog horn in the distance....if you get MY drift.....

Wicked,
Yeah, that's Summer in Monterey. It's September now. Fall comes early here ( leaves already changing ) and stays late. My favorite time of year.

Inspired by Joe Sample's "Carmel" album cover, my first visit there was in October 1992...and I fell in love with the area then. I don't care how cold the temperature may get...the beauty of Monterey/Carmel warms the heart. God may have rested on the 7th day...but he spent all of one of the other 6 creating THAT masterpeice ! (LOL) I am not "well traveled"...but if I had to spend the rest of my life in ANY place I have visited or even read about...it would be Monterey/Carmel.

Thanks Wicked. The area is rather unique. I've been here 27 years. The place has a way of getting under your skin.

My most embarrassing musical moment are pretty tame, but still traumatizes me to this very day. When I first started DJing in '77, we used to have folks that would rap in the style of the day. I never was for that, as I really had nothing to say. As funny as it may seem to all of you, I was never much for public speaking. Unless I really feel strongly about something, I can't speak on it believably.

Anyway, around '79, I decided to make a tape & rap over songs like Bra & Love Is The Message. I have to tell you that it was the WORST CRAP that you could ever hear. Fast forward 20 years. In '98, I married my wife (after being re-acquainted 5 years earlier), who just happened to be my girlfriend around the time of my "GREAT" rap experiment. She had heard the tape all of those years ago, along with her brother & I never quite lived that down.

She told the kids about it & badgered me into playing it for them. Now, these are 80s kids, used to hearing Hip Hop from the '90s. When my son heard some guy rapping, sounding like Frankie Crocker on downers, he damn near fell through the floor laughing. ALL OF THEM LAUGHED.....REAL HARD...including my wife, the instigator.

To add insult to my injury, my son looks at me & asked in an incredulous voice: "Daddy, was that you???!!!??? I looked down at the ground & he asked me, what was I thinking of & why did I do it. He shook his head knowingly & they ALL commenced to once again fall in the floor laughing, crying & rolling on the floor at my shame!! The looks on their faces were something else. They were going to send me on to The Labor Day Telethon like I was one of Jerry's Kids. It was simply one of the worst Rap performances this side of mankind. Absolutely horrible & to this day, I still don't know what I was thinking of.

This tape is now securely hidden away, guarded by three guys who look like Suge Knight & Mr. T, 2 angry pit bulls & a Rottie. And if you ever hear it, I'd have to kill you.

Juice,
I understand completely.
A friend of mine has a soundboard tape of a very drunk me trying to do Wayne County and the Electric Chairs' "Max's Kansas City" on a punk jam night in Hamtramck nearly 20 years ago. Whenever I'm out of line and he wants to rein me in, he threatens to share the tape and I fall right into line. Horrible singing that sounds like a cross between cats mating and an overemoting whale giving birth.

Satipe: Trust me, I'm a filming freak & one who chronicles those important moments in life. If camcorders had been around then, I would have recorded it & REALLY made a fool of myself. Thank God that technology, or lack thereof saved me from myself. The thought is mortifying.

Brian: Back in 1976, I discovered my muse. One of the funkiest, greatest writers of song, whom I ever heard. His albums inspired me, they spoke to my very soul. This hero inspired me to aspired to great things, to create perfect, meaningful songs. That man is named.....

BLOWFLY

I had the idea that I could sing too. WRONG!!! I made a tape of me giving songs the Blowfly treatment. This was '76, so it was heavy on the Disco music. OH....the songs I destroyed! Unfortunately, once again I had a tape deck & damned if I didn't record myself. That presaged my illustrious "Rap" tape & was only MARGINALLY better, as the Rap tape was several levels below abysmal. I think that I have that singing tape somewhere around. I think that it's partially disentegrated, due to the lousy contents. No tape could possibly stand up to such lousy singing.

If I had a stage name, it would've been "TONE DEAF"!!!

My most embarassing musical moment was when I was in the fifth grade. I was in this Christmas musical and I forgot a line. I was so embarassed, so I just improvised. Everyone loved it though.

Charise is right Dinelle. I couldn't tell you how many times I had to " fake it " during my playing days. It's great training.

Just as long as folks don't fake it in certain ways, it's ok.
