I tuned in to Comedy Central last week to watch Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" and caught the last 5 minutes of a Conan O'Brien re-run. There was a singer on by the name of Van Hunt. He, and the song he was performing, sounded like vintage Curtis Mayfield. So much so, in fact, that it actually gave me goosebumps! I was spellbound by this unexpected slice of Old Skool on the tube. At the end of the song, his guitarist tore into this Hendrixian, or more appropriately, Ron Isley-esque solo. Needless to say I was wildly impressed.

Does anyone know anything about Van Hunt or his CD? From what I saw and heard, most of you here on the SDF would just eat this up. I read where he lives in Atlanta, writes his own material and plays multiple instruments. Amazon.com has a batch of effusively complimentary reviews to go along with with his eponymously-titled debut.

Before I take a chance and buy his CD, I thought I would ask if anyone here has it or is hip to Van....

R&B crooner Van Hunt grew up surrounded by the pimp lifestyle of his father. A soundtrack of classic soul and contemporary R&B was his backdrop and Hunt immersed himself in the tones and moods of it all. A move from the Midwest to Atlanta in his early twenties allowed Hunt to hone his soul sound in the making. He'd been playing guitar and writing songs since his teens, so naturally a career in music was on the horizon. Capitol inked him a deal in 2003 and his self-titled debut arrived in February 2004. Appearances on Soul Train, Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn, and NPR coincided with the release of Van Hunt's double single "Dust and "Seconds of Pleasure."

Thanks Raymond, "Seconds of Pleasure" was the song he performed on Conan, which I thought was fantastic. Do you have his CD?

Oops! I wondered if Van had been mentioned here before and scrolled down the page of current topics and didn't see his name before I posted. He's probably already in the archives. I'll have to admit that I was a little curious how someone with such an obvious appeal to soul music fans could not have been discussed on SDF before now.

John:
I strongly recommend that you pick up the CD. There's a lot of new eclectic soul on it and there are the inevitable comparisons to Sly, Stevie, Curtis and Prince.

In Philly there's an Adult Alternative Album radio station, WXPN 88.5 FM, who had it as their featured CD of the week in the spring. They played several cuts all week long. Other than that I don't think that it has received much airplay, although I actually heard "Dust" the other day on an in-store tape in a book store.

"Seconds Of Pleasure" is quite the jam along with "Dust", "Anything To Get Your Attention" and "Out Of The Sky" IMO.

It's right up there with the recent Kem and Donny CD's.
