Great pics as usual Mr. McDougal! Thanks for sharing with us. I knew that Linda Creed was a great writer but I had no idea that she was so beautiful. It's also great to see the pic of one of my personal favorites Miss Dee Dee Sharp Gamble. She's also a beautiful woman and a wonderful singer who's given us some great recordings through the years. We don't see or hear enough about her on the forum. Thanks again. :-)

WOW!

The Pics of Bunny and Soul Survivors looks like at the same place...do you remember where they were taken? Ron Tyson was the same on that is in the Temptations, right? And I never saw any pictures of Johnny Nash except on the album with I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW...I wonder what happened to him?

Linda Creed was so beautiful! Great shot of her!

These make me wish that I was a little more grown up so I could enjoy this era of good music! :-)

Hey Lady M,
Jack is a brilliant arranger and sax player.
And yes, he was the alto player on LWLMW.

He also arranged most of Teddys solo stuff, Lou Rawls stuff, Spinners Games People Play, Dont let the green grass fool you (spinners), Jackie Moores This time baby and TONS more.
He's a monster! And as Weldon said, one of the nicest gentle you ever met AND he is a gourmet cook and appreciates fine cuisine and he frequents the best restaurants in the city!!!
He and a lady named Tina Lewin were the main copyists as well and they had so much work from everybody that they eventually opend up an office at 1405 Locust just for the purpose of being copyists.

For those who dont know what a copyist does, they are the people an arranger gives their score to so they can copy each and every part for each and every musician.
Needless to say, they had tons of work.

There was another copyist named Chiefy Salaam that we used occasionally as well.

Awesome! That's the best word to describe your photo collection Weldon. You hold in your possession a very rare slice of American Pop Culture. Some of the pictures here finally identified for me some of the singers, musicians and producers that I've only heard of by name.

I sincerely hope you would consider publishing your collection in book form. You would be doing the public a great service in helping to preserve our heritage. Thank you Weldon!!!

Hi again, Mr. Weldon,

Many thanks again!
All my 70's heros (some of wich i never see before in photograph)... Is the intrinsecal value of those picks, his artistic quality, his documental value and also, the sentimental value.

The man you call "Serman" (songwriter), is the same Sherman Marshall (RIP)? I likes some tunes by Teddy Pendergrass he wrote.

I likes a lot the sax by Sam Peack in "Opus de Funk". I ignored he played with People's Choice also in their previous album ("Boogie Down USA").

Also i'm wondering if the songwriter Phil Terry who co-write many songs with Jack Faith is the same Phil from The Intruders.

I don't wanna disturb you with more questions, friend. You're so good person that, despite the fact you're allways very bussy, you take time to share with us those beatiful photos.

Thanks again from the City of "Human Towers"

Hi Manny, yes, thats Sherman Marshall the writer of some of the songs that Teddy did,
Yes, Sam Peack, did work with Peoples Choice some times, he also worked, with the Blue Notes, Billy Paul, and Teddy Pendergress,
and yes again Phil Terry was a writer, he also is the last living member of the Intruders,
hope all is well with you, and I'm glad you are enjoying the photos.

Sam Peake also played on and produced a great album by Heaven and Earth, I think a Chicago group, on WMOT out of Philly.
It was recorded at Veritable Studios, which was in Philly (yes??).
Dexter Wansel played on there as well as Quinton Joseph, from the Windy City. Sam had one blast of a sax solo on Kick It Out (a wild track) but the best known is probably the title track, That's Love. Strings by the way were by "Arnold Grossi's Singing Strings!!"

Hello Submarine to all!

Hey Weldon Union Man (Send A Telegram)

(better, send more photos, please, smile!)

Many thanks for your explanations. Of the entire PIR catalogue i likes a lot a photo i only saw one time in a second-hand store. Is the back cover photo of "Soul Survivors" PIR / TSOP album where appears the members of the group playing guitars in the country next to a truck or a roulotte (?). I believe many photos was by Gerard Huerta, Don Hunstein or Frank Lafitte, but perhaps these was made by you (?).

Sharon Paige is so beatiful as his voice!!

Thanks again, amigo Mr. Weldon!

Good Morning Weldon,

1) That's the best portait I've seen in quite awhile of House On Fire; The Rise And Fall Of Philadelphia. It reminds me of the acid jazz CD covers that being updated for jazz packaging nowadays.

2) Great pics of my musical heros of Gamble, Huff, Bell, Guitarist Norman Harris, Lou Rawls, Composer Linda Creed, Bunny Sigler.

3) The Soul Survivors. I recall hearing on the national news that Philly had a flood back in the day once before, because it looks like alot of water to conoe on.

4) MFSB, the best of the studio & live bands I ever heard before in my life!!

5) Excellent pics of "Mr. Philly Soul" Billy Paul, Dee Dee (Sharp)& Bobby Martin (I know Bobby's work with LTD), The Three Degrees (My Favorite Pic), Universal Love (I had one lp on them once before a time), Archie Bell & The Drells (Philly via Houston-fo real).

6) Dap Suga(r) Willie, I only knew of him from his appearences on Sanford & Son and Goodtimes. His comic genius and timing was something else of his hustler roles. Man, I use to see them kinds of guys with those special made coats, whatever happen to cats like dat! Hey Weldon I'm kinda curious I do recall him making a comedy lp, I think?

7) We all still miss John RIP.

8) You may not believe this I'm listening to The O'Jays "Time To Get Down", which brings me to the Get Down With The Philly Sound poster you designed.

9) I heard of folk going to Motowns Studio Museum and all, I guess it was something you all we're doing there was phenominal...Actor Clevon Little?

10) Weldon, could you tell us more about Pat & The Blenders or if you we're to start up another Thread about some of Philly's underrated vocal groups, please?

11) I dig the way you've enhanced the pic of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes w/ Sharon Paige!!

12) Weldon, did singer Anthony White record once for one of Sylvia Robinson's (of Pillow Talk fame) NJ labels? I seem to recall his name on a compliation or some singles i assume?

13) Nice pic of Ron Tyson, The late Johnny Nash and of Bunny. You did a good job on gettin' the range of your camera on that one. How come you never went into the profession, Weldon?

14) One of my favorite PI rhythm duo's of Anthony Jackson (bass) and Carl Chambers (drums). I've followed Ant into the jazz world. Excuse me, but isn't Carl related to drummer Dennis Chambers?

15) Wasn't Richard Barrette once we're the Three Degrees manager at one time?

16) Early Ron Tyson and Love Committee w/ Scatman
Crothers. I guess I wonder like many others "what is it that you all are doing?". Which brings me to the conclusion that when Otis of The Tempts came to Philly to talk with Gamble & Huff about recorded, which leads me to believe was probally scouting for new vocalist? When Ron and Ali Woodson was writing for the Tempts, they came up with some of the best songs the group has ever recorded in my IMHO.

17) I have the pic pic you posted of MFSB. Are MFSB and the Sal Soul Orch are one and the same?

18) I never knew that People's Choice was a working band? At times they sounded close to Chgo producer Carl Davis productions.

19) Weldon, that other poster you made up for PIR resembles the Prince from 79.

20) I think the record store in question you post a pic of is I think from looking at the bkgrd, I believe it's Metro Music Record Shop over on the eastside, the southeast side on 87th at Cottage Grove.

21) Rachel wanted some of that Philly Soul too, huh. I did hear once that Richard Roundtree wanting to record some PI stuff as well?

22) I had all of Hugh Mesekela lp's so I know alot about him, except I don't have his lp's any longer and I'm at a disadvantage posting a thread about his works. The guy name Hippy has a very creative & genius mind to converse with you all and to create a great song in "Me & Mrs. Jones".

23) Isn't Lee Garrett a recording artist in his own right, also, I recall him recorded some Chicago sides? Is Phil Terry still with the Intruders, Weldon?

24) I remember "Mr. Philly Soul" Billy Paul's appearence on Soul Train. The ever lovely Sharon Page. Great pic shot of PEople's Choice.

Thanks again Weldon; Its nice to have some "behind-the-scenes" faces to put with the names like Richard Barrett, Joe Jefferson, Charles Simmons & Bobby Martin. Much appreciated.

What's the music like on "Groovin in North Philly"?

I don't know if you knew Philly's Ramon "Tiki" Fulwood, the original drummer for Funkadelic, but I was curious if you happened to know which part of town he was from.

Helluva collection Mr. Mc Dougal !! It's great putting the faces with the names of some of Philly's non-performing stars AND the artists as well. After "House on Fire..." is a best seller....I know you're gonna do a companion PHOTOS ONLY coffee table book...right ??

Yo Don....if I'm not mistaken, Johnny Nash is still alive. He is retired and enjoying his family in his hometown of Houston, Texas. If I'm wrong...point me in the direction of the correct info....>>>>

Sorry, Wicked I use to get Johnny Nash and Ronnie Dyson confused all the time even back in the day. I'm sure some did too?
Don

Weldon, I thought Dap Sugar was a comedy lp or is it a mix of both singing and comedy?

Rich, I was told that "Tiki" was from west philly though I can't elaborate further more, cause I'm not sure what I was told to be the correct infomation or not.
