At $1000 (starting bid) it's got to be a nice album, although I must say I have seen the name a couple of times on lists but I've no idea what it sounds like...

It looks like a publicity stunt to me.

Here's an expensive Detroit disc...

You think the fact that the producer is the one selling the record has anything to do with the price?

Wow, that Two Plus Two 45, started at $6.99, and the winning bid was $6,000. At least the seller is located in the Detroit area.

Just think, had you visted the store, and purchased that 45, you could have gotten it for much less.

Graham - Do you think the Seller knew it was going to go as high as it did?

PhilI can't tell you who has the money to buy this one... I don't know... PLus I still don't know what it sounds like...
Is it sweet soul, funk... or anything else???
As for the 45... it's just plain crazy... (imho)

I don't think the seller expected it to go that high. With Gwen Owens having a great disc on this same Velgo label it probably added to this one's kudos - and price; I don't think it's that great a record.

What may surprise you Sis is that Cyril Clark was in that group... and had the 45... but gave it away to one of the other members of the group (Wilburt Jackson).

I only know of one other copy - which is in the States - so that makes just three known copies so far.

Did you notice that the disc was started at $6.99 and was in a huge pile of other crappy records? Recordmanx was treating it like any other 45 in his store! I would love a suprise like that.

What I'm curious about--what other goodies could have been hiding in that stack of records?

Graham--is this the same Two Plus Two that cut the great "Love Will Conquer All"?

Best,

Mark

The Lee McDonald LP didn't sell. Maybe the seller/producer, Ron Foster, was too greedy ? On ebay, it's not a good choice to put a high starting bid, that may discourage possible bidders.

Robb_K, there are sound clips of the A and B sides of the Two Plus Two 45 on the eBay auction page. If they don't work for you, here are the direct links to the mp3 files:

http://home.comcast.net/~recor dmanx/two_plus_two-im_sure.mp3
http://home.comcast.net/~recor dmanx/two_plus_two-look__aroun d.mp3

I expect they'll be deleted soon, so this may be the only chance for most people to hear them.

I think they're good and the more I play them the more I like them, but quality has nothing to do with value. If there are only three copies of a Northern Soul 45 in the whole world, then $6000 is not really surprising.

A few questions:

1. Is "I'm Sure/Look Around" the only record by this Two Plus Two?

2. How many 45s were issued on Velgo? Only three?

3. Excuse my musical ignorance, but is that a clarinet break on Gwen Owens' fabulous "Just Say You're Wanted"?

Hi Robb,

Two Plus Two included Wilburt Jackson, who recorded "Just Too Much To Hope For" with Clyde Wilson (Steve Mancha) on the HPC label; Cyril Clark - he started with The Majestics on Contour, Terry Davis and Lawrence Matchett. I don't know what the latter two did apart from this one 45.

Yes, I have it on CD. I don't think it's your thing, but I can burn you a copy.

The main guy at Velgo was Tony Wilson - he's dead. The publishing of this disc is by New Mystical - owned by Henry Smith: he's dead too. It was Henry who discovered Gwen at high school.

Tony B

This is the only 45 recorded by this group.

Yes, there were only 3 records on Velgo... unless someone is going to find a 4th!

Thanks Graham and Tony. I've heard of Wilburt Jackson and Cyril Clark. And, I've also seen Terry Davis' name on some other Detroit records (but can't remember which).

What exactly is the pressing fault with Velgo 002? Hole not in the middle?

And who did the vocals on "Lies" allegedly by Gwen Owens? One for Mr. Weldon A. Mc Dougal III , I think!

All the stories I've heard about "Just Say You're Wanted" have said that the hole was pressed off-center, which would cause the 45s to not play properly.

Best,

Mark

The problem with 'Just Say You're Wanted And Needed' is that most of the copies found jump. I'm led to believe this was due to a cheaper (and thinner) grade vinyl being used, but it's more likely that the metal stamping plate was damaged. I'm told that the white label radio station copies are fine though, so the damage may have been caused sometime between the radio station copies being pressed up and sent out and then the stock copies being pressed up. I'm also told that when the pressing fault was discovered all the copies were scrapped, hence the rarity of the record.

This may of course be absolute rubbish (Except the bit about nearly every known copy jumping) because I have no way of verifying what happened in that pressing plant nearly 40 years ago.

The copy of Two plus Two was bought by one of the top DJs over here, but if you watch recordmanx's auctions he starts everything with a low starting price, but is clearly aware of what he is selling as he's sold some major rarities over the last couple of years.

Dave, is it also pressed off-centre? Who's the DJ? I think it would be strange if no copies were in the UK!

Some collectors prefer promo copies because the stamping plates were newer when they were pressed, so the sound should be cleaner and sharper.

Sis, only two or three collectors! :-)

If the promo version is rarer (not always the case), it will be worth more.
