I was in the record store yesterday, and saw Soul to Soul-1971 the music/documentary featuring Wilson Pickett,Roberta Flack, The Staples Singers,Voices Of East Harlem & Ike & Tina. Now I have not seen this or WattsStax, which comes out on Sept 7th. I am going to purchase it this weekend, I have always heard about it, and wondered if it would ever be released, finally it has!! I do however remember hearing the WattsStax sdtk, because my dad had the album. Looks like an interesting piece of history that should not be missed. Soul to Soul is availiable on Amazon.com

:-) Thanks for the info Charise! I've written several posts about both "Wattstax" and "Soul To Soul" on this forum and the old one. On one particular topic on the old forum I even took the time to do a full review of both films but no one was biting. I was under the impression that I was the only one here who cared! LOL.

Last winter I was able to find a DVD with both "Wattstax" and "Soul To Soul" on the same disk for only $20! I came across the website I bought it from when I was looking for the official releases of these two films. The film quality of the disk that I have is not the best and the actual DVD doesn't have any of the bells and whistles that are probably on these new releases. It is however a nice alternative for someone that wants both films on one disk but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll see if I can find the link again and post it here.

Charise, what sort of things are on these new DVD releases? I heard that there is additional unreleased footage included on both of the films. I'd also like to have the soundtracks of these movies to play in my car. If you think that Luther Ingram's hit recording 'If Loving You Is Wrong' is good in the studio, wait until you hear live on "Wattstax"! I can't even listen to the studio version anymore because it seems stale compared the live "Wattstax" version.

If you go to Amazon.com and type in Soul to Soul dvd, it will give you a discription of what is on the dvd/cd.:-):-):-):-):-) I can't wait to see it and the Wattstax dvd!:-):-)

Soul to Soul
I just got this DVD for my birthday and could not be more pleased. I have the VHS that was issued a few years back as well as the soundtrack both on LP and CD. The new one is a two-disc set with both the movie and the soundtrack. There is a 24-page booklet, an outtake performance of Ike & Tina's "I've Been Loving You To Long", a photo gallery featuring never-before-seen photographs and four separate commentary tracks featuring Mavis Staples, Ike Turner, Michael Shrieve of Santana and Kevin Griffin of Voices of East Harlem. I could go on and on, but I won't, just do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of the historical film. I only wish I could have contributed the rare Soul to Soul French poster I have in my collection for the booklet.

I remember running out to the theater to see this movie back in 1971 when it first came out, what a thrill it was for me to see this on the big screen. Now that we have DVD players right in our homes the memories live on forever.

Another great film from this same period that I long to see again is Its Your Thing starring The Isley Brothers, Ike & Tina Turner, The Clara Ward Singers (with Vermettya Royster of Sisters Love opening the film singing a powerful Youll Never Walk Alone) and several other performers that I can not recall. Ronald Isely once told me that he owns the rights to this film and I mentioned to him that it was a must to release it on DVD. Does anybody else remember seeing this film and if so what are your thoughts about it.

Charise and Bro Love, thanks for the info about the new "Soul To Soul" dvd. I just purchased the cheap copy of "Soul To Soul" and "Wattstax" that I was telling you guys about but now I'm thinking about getting the new dvd's just for the extra footage, interviews and liner notes. If you guys keep telling me about all of this good stuff on this forum I'm gonna be even more broke than I am! :-)

Bro Love, I've ALWAYS wanted to see "It's Your Thing"! I even enquired about it on the old forum and I remember someone kept trying to tell me that Ike & Tina weren't in that film. I kept informing this guy that I had seen the actual poster for the movie and that Ike & Tina were listed as one of the acts. Ha! Ron seriously needs to get that one remastered and release on dvd along with these other two Soul concerts! There's not hardly enough Classic Soul concert footage like this available.

I picked up the new SOUL TO SOUL dvd last week. Unfortunately, Roberta Flack is not included in the film. In the booklet notes, it says that she asked not be included on both the new dvd, and the new cd.

That aside, I have enjoyed this new dvd very much. Since I've seen the film many times, I've been watching it along with the various commentary tracks. There must be four or five of them, featuring Mavis Staples, Ike Turner, Les McCann, etc.

I really enjoy listening to Mavis' commentary track. Its interesting to hear her thoughts on the trip, and her fellow performers. I must have played her track three times already.

I saw both Soul to Soul And Wattstax when they came out at the theaters...liked Wattstax more, I loved Ike & Tinas' performance in Soul to Soul but that is really all I can recall after all these years so I will get the DVD of both of these classics. I have never HEARD of "Its Your Thing" so it couldn't have made it down to Fla. back then. Must have been limited distribution so I sure hope that is released on DVD.Thanks for the information Brother Love and everyone.

The performance of Ike & Tina is GREAT, although
Tina has said she was extremely sick with soar-
throat and fever when the film was done.
