Hey Don what about Gary Tyson on WHPK ? The brother is bad !!!!! Not only does he have a great play list but he is one of the most knowledgeable brothers in the Windy City about the origins of black music. Herb Kent Richard Pegue Jim Raggs is on FM 106.3 (Steppers) Thanks for the memories Don as we wrote about these very men & women on another thread. No one in Chi-town will ever forget the Original Good Guys on WVON the Voice of the Negro......... |

Morning Kdudya, Yes your right about brother Gary Tyson. I know it's been awhile, what time does Gary comes on man. I haven't listened to him in quite a while. Can you help me and I'll give him a listen. The only thing with WHPK is I'd have to take my boombox in the front because it picks up better, sometime the back den. I think Gary is good because after Rick left, I felt no one there could fill his spot. See, Rick's thing was by DJ'ing was by playing old school dusty's that hip hop and gangsta rap would sample from, that was his style of DJ'ing. I heard Rick was is stationed somewhere in Arazonia or Memphis, I'm not sure? I remember back in the 90's I read in The Trib & Sun-Times we're HPK was the #1 station college station off & on for 3yrs in a row. I miss the Hyde Park/South Shore areas, alot of fun but mean they can throw some boss parties. Thanks Kdubya for reminding me. With Regards Don |

I'd say myself, but I know better than that. Hats off to Don for picking Larry Lujack. Yo, Westside: It's been awhile since I listened to DJ Garry Tyson, I sort of lost touch and been very busy. Like yourself and Kdubya I'll be on point for now on. Also, you two must persuade Garry to come to join us here at SouLful Detroit or at least log in. Maybe what Mel is saying that he's heard of and is hip to BUGSY. Hi Doug, Yes, Larry is the man A-OK. He's hosting Chicago Tonight on PBS's WTTW. I never miss his show no matter what topic, he keeps it real, at the same time interesting 7 O'clock. I have to thank DVD Mike for jarring the thinking cap. John "Records" Landecker but my main man for the best 50's doowop's & rock 'n roll! Mike, I feel ya, we're Chicagoians and it's deep!! DON |

As for Don and DvyaNaye, the "Dusties Party" is not on the net at this moment, but if all goes well,it will be returning to the net before the year is over or in 2005. I've recognize a few names that I know like WonderB. and 1Wicked.(what's up fellas!!!) I just signed onboard today and I'm looking forward to adding my thoughts from time to time. Since the topic was favorite DJ's, a few of my favorites are Daddy O'Daly,(r.i.p) Dr. Lawerence Gregory Jones,(WGCI) Joe Cobb,(WVON) Barbara Stanik,(WGCI)Marco Spoon,(WBMX)Shirley Hayes(WLNR and now she's return to Chicago and is working at WNUA(yuk!)) He was a very significant individual in the course of the developement of black awareness and our culture. His syndicated show Lu's Notebook was a corner stone of black intellect . Amen Brother Kdubya. Tonite I will be listening to WKKC "The Best Music Of Your Life" with PJ Willis on 89.3 FM. I don't listen to VON on Fri's at midnite f/ 5am anymore. Kdubya, since our favorite DJ is on board now I think we should call him GEETEE, we don't want to blow his cover, know what I mean? I think SP would be jealous. It's like motown folk sneakng over to golden world records, I'm just stating in a playful sort of way of expression w/ a lil' help from DyvaNaye and yourself. PS I listens to Cliff Kelly Mon-Fri f 5-10 am on WVON AM and again on Sun's from 5-8am on WVAZ FM. I caught GEETEE's show and it was a hit-a blast from the past-#1 with a bullet babee My Favorite DJ is GEETEE!! |

Hello gang. I too will miss Lu Palmer. I know he's been seriously ill for the past few months. His funeral will be held at Operation Push this Saturday at 12:30pm. His body wil lie in state at Leaks & Sons,on 78th and Cottage Grove, from 2 to 10 PM.(if you want to pay your respects) Lu's Notebook was always a pleasure and interesting to hear on WVON. It would be cool if they could dig thru the archives and play some of thoughts and views,in memory of a great journalist. I also forgot to give some shot outs (if I may) to Mike Boone and DVD Mike.(what's up guys)And anyone else I forgot to say hello to. Somebody mentioned PJ Willis from 'KKC. I know PJ very well. I only wished he would go alot deeper in his selection of music and not emulate Richard Pegue's format. PJ has a nice collection of music, but I guess he's trying to play it safe, with his audience. Tomorrow on the "Duties Party", I'm doing Part 2 of "Blue Eyed Soul". It should be a pretty interesting show from last month. Alot of forgotten grooves from the 60's,70's, and early 80's. 9PM-Midnight. You know the fequency,so tune in and enjoy. :-) By the way, being know as Gee Tee on this forum is fine, and you wouldn't be blowing my cover.(lol) Those of you that know me know by my real name,it's cool. :-) For anyone that wants to drop me a email,I can be reached at dustieshpk@yahoo.com Thanks... |

GEETEE aint never lieing about forgotten blue eyed soul dusties, I heard part one of his show and it was on point, he really went way back and had a few surprises up his sleeve. It was a great show until he played a particular song by a particular group whose lead singer was very Mercurial and I......well I told GeeTee about and we laughed our arses off.......for his benefit and as not to prevent anyone from tuning in...the group and the song shall remain nameless.....however that being said I am requesting that GT play some Pete Belasco for a brother......that will put this old man right in the mood......maybe .....Keep On ?????? and the band played on....... Growing up. I liked listening to Sunny Joe White on WILD 109AM in Boston. Later, he moved to WXKS "KISS" 108-FM. |

Kdubya, I'm listening to GEETEE now and he's really taking me back a way. Especially, Rare Earth's rendition of "(I Know) I'm Losing You", I'm talking about the long version-no short version play!! Don |

GEETEE, I miss my GE sterio. It picked up college stations like Northwestern, Laloya. And I can't say I have had a up to date sterio as of yet that can pick up stations like them. I can pick up Laloya after KKC goes off the air though. GE needs to bring their sterio back on the market again. I'll should be getting it back soon in a few days that specializes in older models like my. Another station I'm into alot is WSSD 88.1 FM for their blues/r&b-soul/gospel or 13.90 AM with WVON's Pervin Spann "The Blues Man" when you go off the air GEETEE. Another station I'll sometime listen to is Xavier College's 88.3 FM, it's cool. Another station in the 80's I was very impress with was a station in Gary, Ind, who's call letters are WLPH AM that's on the left side of 1390 AM. I forgot the frequency numbers that catered to their local news and livestock? Well, their gospel, (and r&b dustys) was off the charts. About 3 yrs I was talking to cousins that lives in Gary and told them about WLPH, and their reaction was POSITIVE. They listens to alot of the stations here more often. I mean all their lives there they weren't even aware of their own local radio station, wow I was amazed. Said they'd knew but forgotten about it all these yrs. That was 2-3 yrs ago, when the station was back activated. It's one of those on & off again station that makes a comeback occasionally. Don |

A very youthful Jim Rags I might add. GEETEE knows his stuff and he's not intrusive and provides background about the music. He is very, very, good at what he does. I could'nt pick him up last night, Chi-town weather patterns and modern stereo equipment wreck havoc on a small watt station like WHPK, but hell sometimes I cant pick up 106.3 clearly. But every once in a while some lucky person can get a tape of his show (wink!!) Kdub |

Ha,Ha :-) Thanks for the compliments fellas. I'm just doing something that I love and filling a void that those "other stations" aren't doing. I happen to like 106.3,but I can't pick them up in my house.(hmmm....) Their format is like 'BMX and 'GCI in the eighties. I guess by them not being owned by Clear Channel helps. (THANK GOD!!) I had a ball with the "Blue Eyed Soul" show and just think,I still have enough music to do a Part 3.(I'll do it again in the near future) By the way Kdub, I closed the show out with Pete Belasco's "Keep On". I did some research and found out that his CD is racked #24, on the Contemporary Jazz Charts. (It's a shame his CD is not getting any airplay on a particular watered-down sappy "smooth jazz" station in Chi-town!) I guess they think it's "too urban" sounding, for their format. Also, Tower Records had his CD on sale for $13.99. People, don't sleep on this cat. He's tough!!! The name of the CD is entitled "Deeper". Great after midnight listening CD and a great CD,if you're a stepper. |

Hey Mike (Chancellor), Happy to see Bobby Jay included on your list (even if he came in last...lol). Bobby is a dear friend of mine, and he has one of the greatest radio voices ever. PLUS, you won't find a more knowledgeable guy, when it comes to the music. I never felt he got his due, even though he's been doing it in NY for decades. Jim |
